Posted June 12, 200421 yr Wheeling (pop: 31,419) is a hidden gem for architecture enthusiasts. The city is nearly intact from old 1800s rowhouses, townhouses, Victorian wood-frame, and a rather large downtown for the city's population size. Located along the Ohio River, Wheeling, a metropolitan area of about 154,000, is home of Oglebay Park, Wheeling Island, and Wheeling Downs racetrack. First up...Downtown. Next up...Neighborhoods... May 3, 200520 yr I can't help myself, I love the place. Great old buildings (many in need of rehab or at least a scrubbing). Anda definite urban look and feel in a tight area between hill and river. Nice shots ColDay, thanks
May 4, 200520 yr ColDay - awesome pics! I'm new to this site and this is the first time I checked out this particular forum. I was shocked to sees pic of my hometown. Like many cities, Wheeling's downtown business disctrict had been on a steady decline for a number of years losing both office and retail business. However, recently there has been a lot of rehab architecture development in Center Wheeling and downtown that has restored a number of large buildings that had fallen in disrepair into new and pretty cool office space, luring businesses back to those areas. I agree that many of the buildings are in need of a "scrubbing" at the very least, but the city is in the process of giving grants to businesses to restore the historical facades of the buildings. I don't make it back there often, but in the future I will try to get some pics of the newer rehabs & restored facades as more are completed.
February 10, 200619 yr At first I was shocked to see a Kaufmann's store...but then I realized it only had one 'n' so it must be local. Cool pics and architecture!

You are correct the Kaufman's store you see in the picture is a local bridal / gown store. I was friends with the family that owned it growing up. However, there is still a Kaufmann's at the mall about 8 miles from downtown.
