Posted January 3, 200817 yr I was wondering if anyone here is keeping up on the upcoming movie "Cloverfield" and the mass marketing campaign they have been doing based around Viral videos and Alternate Reality Gaming? Well, if you know nothing about Cloverfield, it is basically a giant monster takes on Manhattan filmed in the Blair Witch style type of movie. However, that's about all anyone knows about this movie. It has been very hush hush and everything thus far has been based on fan speculation and clues from fictional websites. Even what the monster looks like or where it comes from is still not known. Here is a quick trailer for the movie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufYF0f-zMgY&rel=1 To date, no one really knows what the monster looks like or what the story really is about which is an INCREDIBLE feat for a movie from Hollywood these days to keep things secret this close to opening day. There are many websites that are linked to Cloverfield that give clues about the movie. These websites are... www.1-18-08.com http://tagruato.jp http://tidowave.com/ http://slusho.jp http://jamieandteddy.com/ (password to access this site is : jllovesth) In addition to those, there are several fictional MySpace pages based around the central characters. http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins http://www.myspace.com/jamielascano http://www.myspace.com/beth_mcintyre http://www.myspace.com/lily_ford This definitely has made this movie that more interesting to watch and when it comes out, and even if it really sucks, it already has given me more entertainment than any movie has in years. Are we seeing the next generation of Hollywood Blockbuster promotional marketing?
January 3, 200817 yr This is probably one of the greatest marketing schemes ever done and I've been following this movie in the blogs since Transformers. The ones I follow: http://www.cloverfieldnews.com/ http://projectcloverfield.com/ http://www.cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/ http://1-18-08.blogspot.com/ http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/index.php?f=232&sid=bd3d7c40775f18409862c8da451e7323 "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 3, 200817 yr I have as well. I think it'll be a decent movie. Has the chances of this being a new Godzilla flick been completely dismissed yet?
January 3, 200817 yr I hadn't considered the possibility, as I haven't been following the hype. But it would be a spooky coincidence, I just had a dream that I was being chased by Godzilla.
January 3, 200817 yr Changed the title to reflect the actual movie name for those curious. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 4, 200817 yr This movie has my attention. Wasn't Godzilla consider a "friendly" monster? Would he really be knocking Lady Liberty's head off. Also, Transformers was a guilty pleasure for me. Great eye candy with the robot battles. It got me thinking if I had any Transformer toys and I didn't. I was a kid of the 70's not the 80's. I was a big fan of Shogun Warriors. I had quite a collection, along with Star Wars, of course. So I looked up Shogun Warriors and who is listed but Godzilla. Small world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shogun_Warriors. This entry brings it all back. "The most attractive features on these toys were the spring loaded launcher weapons such as missiles, star shuriken, and battleaxes. Some robots were able to launch their fists. The later diecast versions of these toys were also attractive for the ability to transform into different shapes. Raydeen, for instance, was changeable into a birdlike spaceship. These "convertible" editions were the precursors to the "Transformers" line of toy robots but unlike the later toyline it was not unusual for minor dissasembly to be required to achieve the secondary form. Also the second form was not always an apparently useful one, a "giant skull" for instance."
January 4, 200817 yr http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverfield J. J. Abrams conceived of a new monster after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense."
January 4, 200817 yr Ugh...sorry guys, it won't be Godzilla, Paramount does not own the rights to Godzilla and neither does Sony anymore. Toho owns the Godzilla franchise and after the utter destruction of Godzilla in the American version, don't expect Toho to let us use the Godzilla rights any time soon. Also, it's not a "mutant whale" and it's not "Cthulhu" just to clear things up. All these have already been dismissed by J.J. Abrams (producer) and Bryan Burke (produer) in multiple interviews. It will be something original that no one has seen before. :-D
January 4, 200817 yr Changed the title to reflect the actual movie name for those curious. Awww, I was hoping to draw posters into this thread by keeping it a mystery like the marketing :-P Oh, and btw, if you like Star trek, there will be a teaser trailer before Coverfield for Star Trek 11. Word is on the street, it's pretty intense. More reason to go see Cloverfield...I'm such a dork
January 4, 200817 yr I love how they have had all of this online marketing going on since mid-fall. But the movie coming up that has been completely blowing away all other online hype is the new Batman movie.

That sounds awesome.
January 4, 200817 yr yeah.. i'm hooked and i haven't really been following it until i watched the trailer at the beginning of this thread and now i really want to see it.. looks like it will be a pretty good flick
January 6, 200817 yr Like i previously mentioned, Cloverfield will be seen by some lucky contest winners on January 15th. /Film reports that 38 contests in 27 cities which will hold contests for a chance to win a ticket to a screening of Cloverfield on the 15th. The list of cities are: Austin, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Calgary, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Edmonton, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Miami, Montreal, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Raleigh, San Antonio, San Francisco, Tampa, Toronto, Vancouver, Virginia Beach, Washington, DC, West Palm Beach, and Winnipeg http://projectcloverfield.com/ "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 6, 200817 yr ^How does one enter? It's nice seeing this going on in the smaller markets for a change. NYC, Chicago and L.A. are absent in the contest.
January 6, 200817 yr ^Because they probably have even earlier screenings. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 7, 200817 yr Keeping up with this, there are new viral videos of an oil station owned by Tagruato (the company that has something to do with the Cloverfield monster) that are getting attacked. These videos can be found in Japanese, French, Italian and German. No English one yet, so I have no idea what the reporters are saying. Judging by the news report, this movie is going to be a ride! Here's the French version. Can anyone translate this? :-) " Edit: here's all a link to all 4 news video's with Spanish and German translations... http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/

January 7, 200817 yr ^How does one enter? It's nice seeing this going on in the smaller markets for a change. NYC, Chicago and L.A. are absent in the contest. I can only speak for us, but I pretty confident in saying the test markets (ex: Dallas, Raleigh & St. Lake) and first screening markets (Austin, Las Vegas, Tampa) usually offer contest to generate feed back. This movie is going to suck. Go out and see P.S I love you, The Golden Compans, I am Legend or The orphanage instead!

As I mentioned I signed up for it (Saturday) already. Already seen Golden Compass and I am Legend. Golden Compass was NOT better than Narnia or Harry Potter and I am Legend was good, but I can see getting bored of it after only a couple of showings. Cloverfield may or may not suck...actually it's already destined for failure due to the massive hype surrounding it. But I just love how they marketed the movie. That's what makes it worth it even if it doesn't fair that well on the big screen.
January 7, 200817 yr My only problem with this is that the anticipation may be better than the movie. I'm afraid once you see what the monster/problem is, it will be a huge letdown. I saw the first TV trailer for it, and it already lost some of the mystique for me. I'm hoping the monsters are Gleep and Gloop from the Herculoids. PS I love you....blech. I'm hoping she falls in love with Gleep and Gloop as well.
January 7, 200817 yr ^---Yea, PS I love You, chick flick all the way. I wait till those come out on video...or a hot date. LOL

January 10, 200817 yr ^ That sounds plausible, so long as the monsters can be beaten by a teradactyl and a pail of water.

January 11, 200817 yr ^---The buzz is there are a couple of peeps have scene the movie behind secure and closed doors. Even though they are reluctant to discuss movie details, the consensus is this movie is unlike anything ever seen on the big screen. Sounds good so far. Here's one pre-review (may contain spoilers). http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35236

Bah, I cant visit that site because it is 'entertainment' or some bs like that.
January 11, 200817 yr harry is such a shill, he gets excited about every freakin movie where those involved pay any attention to him. the talk-backers rip him to shreds about it too. still, im as addicted to that site as anybody. heh. speaking of aint it cool, did you know one the regular reviewers, quint i think, not sure, is an ohioan? i am sure he's from bowling green city, i think he's a bgsu faculty brat (as the kids of the profs are so-called).
January 11, 200817 yr ^ i think it was mentioned on aint it cool. meanwhile..... see the monster here. for a second. part of it: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/01/see_the_cloverfield_monster_fo.html
January 18, 200817 yr About 90% of the reviews thus far are really positive! There are the few select reviewers that just don't get movies and for some reason love to compare this to 9-11. C'mon people! it's a monster movie! Buildings will crumble and people will bite it! Anyway, the buzz is VERY good so far. If you have not yet read any reviews by now, then I suggest you wait 1 more day and don't read any reviews as they have unfortunately been spoiling the monster and there is an actually clip someone snuck out of the movie on their cell. I regret seeing the clip now and wish I would've waited. Oh well LOL
January 18, 200817 yr I haven't looked locally yet, but apparently midnight showings are selling out everywhere. Too bad I don't get paid till tomorrow! :whip:
January 18, 200817 yr Oh, btw, there is a anime Cloverfield online comicbook out. It dives in deeper to the Cloverfield mystery. It looks like they are really going to give Godzilla a run for the money with this thing. Can't wait to see more. Here's the English translated comics. http://merzmensch.blogspot.com/2008/01/cloverfield-manga.html
January 18, 200817 yr Just saw Cloverfield at a private showing in Ann Arbor around 7:00......hmmmm - sigh - I'll explain what I didn't like when people see it.
January 18, 200817 yr Do they call it that because they're metro Detroit's B!tch or because there's a lot of wh0res?
January 18, 200817 yr Btw, if they're going to be overly sensitive they need to do a massive recall of Day After Tomorrow until Katrina victims have enough time to grieve. Go to hell Hollywood!
January 18, 200817 yr My assistant went to the premiere. He gave it 2-2.5 stars. He said to make sure you sit near the back of the theatre not the front.
January 18, 200817 yr My assistant went to the premiere. He gave it 2-2.5 stars. He said to make sure you sit near the back of the theatre not the front. I made the mistake of sitting in the front, although I'm not sure the back would have been much better. I felt seasick throughout the whole thing.
January 18, 200817 yr shhh. He said he felt like he needed a Dramamine, an airsickness bag and some brown liquor! He and his partner were in the middle, but they couldn't move. So he was telling all us to make sure to sit in the back third as friends of his didn't "feel" as bad as he and his partner did.
January 18, 200817 yr Just got back from seeing it. The first 20 mins was boring but the rest makes up for it.
January 18, 200817 yr Just saw it. AWESOME. Definitely see it from a safe distance, though. Friggin' awesome. MORE than delivers on the hype. Masterpiece.
