I was wondering if anyone here is keeping up on the upcoming movie "Cloverfield" and the mass marketing campaign they have been doing based around Viral videos and Alternate Reality Gaming?

 

Well, if you know nothing about Cloverfield, it is basically a giant monster takes on Manhattan filmed in the Blair Witch style type of movie. However, that's about all anyone knows about this movie. It has been very hush hush and everything thus far has been based on fan speculation and clues from fictional websites. Even what the monster looks like or where it comes from is still not known. To date, no one really knows what the monster looks like or what the story really is about which is an INCREDIBLE feat for a movie from Hollywood these days to keep things secret this close to opening day.

This definitely has made this movie that more interesting to watch and when it comes out, and even if it really sucks, it already has given me more entertainment than any movie has in years.

 

Are we seeing the next generation of Hollywood Blockbuster promotional marketing?

This is probably one of the greatest marketing schemes ever done and I've been following this movie in the blogs since Transformers.

I hadn't considered the possibility, as I haven't been following the hype.  But it would be a spooky coincidence, I just had a dream that I was being chased by Godzilla.

This movie has my attention. Wasn't Godzilla consider a "friendly" monster? Would he really be knocking Lady Liberty's head off.

 

Also, Transformers was a guilty pleasure for me. Great eye candy with the robot battles. It got me thinking if I had any Transformer toys and I didn't. I was a kid of the 70's not the 80's. I was a big fan of Shogun Warriors. I had quite a collection, along with Star Wars, of course.

 

So I looked up Shogun Warriors and who is listed but Godzilla. Small world.

J. J. Abrams conceived of a new monster after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense."

Ugh...sorry guys, it won't be Godzilla, Paramount does not own the rights to Godzilla and neither does Sony anymore. Toho owns the Godzilla franchise and after the utter destruction of Godzilla in the American version, don't expect Toho to let us use the Godzilla rights any time soon.

 

Also, it's not a "mutant whale" and it's not "Cthulhu" just to clear things up. All these have already been dismissed by J.J. Abrams (producer) and Bryan Burke (produer) in multiple interviews. It will be something original that no one has seen before.  :-D

Oh, and btw, if you like Star trek, there will be a teaser trailer before Coverfield for Star Trek 11. Word is on the street, it's pretty intense. More reason to go see Cloverfield...I'm such a dork  :laugh:

I love how they have had all of this online marketing going on since mid-fall. But the movie coming up that has been completely blowing away all other online hype is the new Batman movie.

Keeping up with this, there are new viral videos of an oil station owned by Tagruato (the company that has something to do with the Cloverfield monster) that are getting attacked. These videos can be found in Japanese, French, Italian and German. No English one yet, so I have no idea what the reporters are saying. Judging by the news report, this movie is going to be a ride!

Cincinnati is in the test screening contest. As I mentioned I signed up for it (Saturday) already. Already seen Golden Compass and I am Legend. Golden Compass was NOT better than Narnia or Harry Potter and I am Legend was good, but I can see getting bored of it after only a couple of showings.

 

Cloverfield may or may not suck...actually it's already destined for failure due to the massive hype surrounding it. But I just love how they marketed the movie. That's what makes it worth it even if it doesn't fair that well on the big screen.

My only problem with this is that the anticipation may be better than the movie. I'm afraid once you see what the monster/problem is, it will be a huge letdown. I saw the first TV trailer for it, and it already lost some of the mystique for me.

 

I'm hoping the monsters are Gleep and Gloop from the Herculoids.

 

PS I love you....blech. I'm hoping she falls in love with Gleep and Gloop as well.

Hmm so tomorrow is the day.

About 90% of the reviews thus far are really positive! There are the few select reviewers that just don't get movies and for some reason love to compare this to 9-11. C'mon people! it's a monster movie! Buildings will crumble and people will bite it! Anyway, the buzz is VERY good so far. If you have not yet read any reviews by now, then I suggest you wait 1 more day and don't read any reviews as they have unfortunately been spoiling the monster and there is an actually clip someone snuck out of the movie on their cell. I regret seeing the clip now and wish I would've waited. Oh well LOL

I haven't looked locally yet, but apparently midnight showings are selling out everywhere. Too bad I don't get paid till tomorrow!  :whip:

Oh, btw, there is a anime Cloverfield online comicbook out. It dives in deeper to the Cloverfield mystery. It looks like they are really going to give Godzilla a run for the money with this thing. Can't wait to see more.

My assistant went to the premiere.  He gave it 2-2.5 stars.

I made the mistake of sitting in the front, although I'm not sure the back would have been much better.  I felt seasick throughout the whole thing.

He said he felt like he needed a Dramamine, an airsickness bag and some brown liquor!

 

He and his partner were in the middle, but they couldn't move.  So he was telling all us to make sure to sit in the back third as friends of his didn't "feel" as bad as he and his partner did.

Just got back from seeing it. The first 20 mins was boring but the rest makes up for it.

Just saw it. AWESOME.

 

Definitely see it from a safe distance, though.

 

Friggin' awesome. MORE than delivers on the hype. Masterpiece.
