Cincinnati: Union Terminal, Fountain Square, Nada & Cadillac Ranch *Ultra Wide*

Featured Replies

Kevin from http://www.building-cincinnati.com and I took a couple of sets of photos of Union Terminal & Fountain Square last night.  It was nice to get out an take photos of Cincinnati for a change since I have been out of the state & country quite a bit lately. (You can see the world gallery here: http://www.pbase.com/cincyimages/cities)  I had recently purchased a new wide angle lens so you can see the results of the lens in these photos.  The evening was finished off with a beer and dinner from Nicholson's Tavern on Walnut.

Nice! The Union Terminal shots are dramatic!

WoW! Not too many cities in the world have something as wonderful as the Union Terminal.  Just about as close to perfect as I can imagine.  Your shots are terrific.  Like rob said, very dramatic.  The Fountain Square photos are spectacular as well.

The interior shots of Union Terminal are the best.

I like the photo that shows both the fountain and Carew Tower.

Nice work...

Beautiful!

Great pics! I love Union Terminal.  Would have been ashamed had that been lost.

Great shots! Union Terminal is my favorite building in the city.

Aw, Cincy Images is advertising on Fountain Square now...very nice. ;)

Wonderful set!

Love 'em!

awesome pictures.  Nada needs to get some signage already....

There's not much I like in Cincinnati, but the Union Terminal is one heck of a building.  Too bad Amtrak still doesn't use it.

Beautiful shots!

Thanks for the kind words all!

You are incorrect.  Union Terminal is still a train station and Amtrak still uses it.  The primary focus of the building is for museum purposes but Cincinnati's passenger rail still flows through it.  Unfortunately Cincinnati is nothing more than a stop on the Chicago - Washington D.C. route so we have to catch the train at 3AM to go either direction.

Megabus (http://www.megabus.com) is a better alternative when traveling to Chicago.

Hmmm, I was reading up on the place on Wikipedia (great source, I know) and it said they moved the station.

Well that's great, it's a gorgeous facility.

There's not much I like in Cincinnati...

You don't like the Carew Tower?!

It's not bad.. I don't think it's the end all be all, and I don't think it's on the level of Terminal Tower.

For the record, there was a gap of about 20 years that Amtrak did not use Union Terminal, but operated out of a dingy little building nearby on River Road.

You dont like otr?  or uc?

Ahhh that must be it.

To be honest, Terminal AND Carew aren't really THAT attractive (though both are great buildings).  Carew's brick cheapens the building and Terminal's proportions are disgusting and make the building seem smaller than it actually is (think the Palace of Culture and Science in Warszawa, minus the impressive massing).  If anything, they are simply city icons that became ingrained in their respective city's minds.  Carew IS on the level of Terminal but neither are Chrysler ;).

im glad colday came in and gave the official opinion of urban ohio.  now we can rest at night. :-)

I heard Union Terminal is heavily studied by architecture students. I'm not sure why.

Basically, both suck.  Go Fifth Third Tower!!!

hehe....oh oh oh, go rhodes!!! (obnoxious laugh, snort, obnoxious laugh)

Hey, Rhodes is Ohio's best "tallest."  What else could cause such controversy?  A silly little Kansas City bootleg in Cincinnati?  A Charlotte reject in Cleveland?  A black box in Dayton?  A wimpy little John Hancock Center/Boston in Toledo?  Or that extended Youngstown's tallest in Akron?

No.  Columbus wins.  Rhodes Tower, UrbanOhio salutes!

Those turned out great!

BTW...Mine will be up in a week or two for comparison's sake.  I haven't had time to get around to them--today I was editing photos of a hole in the ground.

Do you really have an advertisement on the skating rink or did you photoshop that in?

I really think the best part of the Carew Tower is the lobby and Netherland Plaza on the inside.  On the outside they ran out of money and couldn't continue the decoration about the second or third floor.

What about the Central Trust tower ... you don't like that either?

If you're talking about the Fifth Third Tower in Columbus, I agree with you.  A hidden art deco gem.

These are great...I really like the FS one with Carew in it and the interior shots of Union Terminal.  BTW ColDayMan, Union Terminal is admired across the country...not just locally.  Carew and Central Trust are not, but both are fantastic in their own right.

KStay...how about the Roebling Suspension Bridge, you don't like that either?  Do you have a rule where you can only like one building per city, because I really don't see how you can not like beauties like Carew, Central Trust, Roebling, just about all of OTR, CAC, etc.  Cincinnati has one of the most varied and best collections of architecture in Ohio.

Lovin' the wide angle lens!  Absolutely gorgeous shots.  Beautiful.  My hats off to you.

Nice shots.....I like the one of FS with all the buildings in the background.

Very nice as usual.
