StarTrek coming to town!? Wow!

  • 1 month later...

Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray was in Richland County on Thursday to tout GrowNOW, the former Small Business Linked Deposit Program. Established in 1983 by then-Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow, the program invests in a CD with a local bank, which then passes on a 3-percent interest rate reduction to businesses taking out loans.

This is a great program, FYI, and remarkably easy for companies to apply for. Everyone wins. It's cost effective for the state (the cost is the below market return they get on the CD they open at the participating bank), borrower gets a ridiculously low rate for up to 4 years, and the bank faces no loss of margin. I just helped a client close on one today.

Thanks for keeping us posted, Andrew.

I heard Mansfield is considering getting rid of 9-1-1 because of the cost.

^I haven't heard anything about that. I don't things have gotten that bad, yet. I just really hope that my mom doesn't lose her job and that GM stays open. If it were to close, that would set off a round of other closings/layoffs (Jay Industries, Newman Tech, etc.). Not to mention the repercussions it might have on retail and other business in the area.

^still, I think that it would be a last resort. I am sure they can find a way to keep 911.

I've been wondering how long until the Ontario GM plant shuts down.  mr. rockandroller is from Y-town so we are always trying to guess which of our hometown GM "neighborhood" plants will go first - Ontario or Lordstown.  Looks like it may be Ontario. That will be a big blow to the region for sure.

^Yes, it will. I have several relatives who would lose their jobs if GM closed. Not to mention the negative effects that would have on other industries in Mansfield (Newman Tech and Jay Industries to name a few) as well as on area business in general.

Mansfield GM plant to lose 190 by April 1

News Journal staff report • March 27, 2009

ONTARIO — The Mansfield Stamping Plant will lose an estimated 190 hourly workers, many by April 1, to General Motors Corp.’s Special Attrition Program, the auto giant announced Wednesday.

  • 4 weeks later...

Not necessarily about Mansfield, but it is still important to the region. I don't see why Mansfield and Ontario can't be merged, all you have to do is cross a street and you are in a different city. While there at it, they should make Madison apart of Mansfield as well.

Councilman: Big cuts ahead for Ontario, GM

By LOU WHITMIRE • News Journal • April 29, 2009

ONTARIO -- Nobody wants to make cuts at the City of Ontario, but Councilman Paul Williams said tough decisions aren't personal decisions.

Isn't Madison really just a neighborhood, not a city?  I thought Ontario was an actual different city.  Or is it just a corporation or something.

Madison is a township with a population of around 14,600 people. I think that the rest of the township that isn't already apart of Mansfield, should be apart of Mansfield (Mansfield is in Madison township). Ontario is a "city" of about 5,000 people and should also be combined with Mansfield.
