Posted May 18, 200520 yr It is amazing to think that the national sports writers used to never say anything nice about Bob Huggins are now coming to his defense. In the meantime Nancy Zimpher has egg on her face. We'll say this slowly ... May 17, 9:38 a.m. How can the school president be the dumbest person on campus? It happened a few years back at Georgia, where president Michael Adams hired Jim Harrick despite the fact that he was, well, Jim Harrick. And now it is happening at Cincinnati, where president Nancy Zimpher has gone out of her way to undermine her athletic department's cash cow -- the men's basketball program -- at the exact moment the Bearcats are entering the enormously competitive Big East Conference. Cincinnati announced Monday night that Zimpher won't extend Huggins' contract. With only two years remaining on his deal, Huggins and his staff will enter the Big East shark tank with dull teeth. If Zimpher was smart -- too bad she's only the university president -- she'd have extended Huggins' contract through 2010, 2015, whenever ... and then written in a university option to buy out the contract for $1.4 million after the 2006-07 season. If the school was willing to pay $1.4 million to buy out Huggins now, and is only guaranteeing him two more years, what's the difference? More at http://news.enquirer.com/
May 18, 200520 yr What a stupid time for all of this to be such an issue. If she wanted him gone, she should have gotten rid of him over the DUI incident. To do this as the team prepares to go the the Big East is unconscionable.
May 21, 200520 yr It's been more than a week since 9News first reported the contract dispute between UC head basketball coach Bob Huggins and the university's president, Dr. Nancy Zimpher. On Friday, UC great Oscar Robertson told Channel 9's Paula Faris that Huggins-Zimpher relations have gone from bad to none. Nancy Zimpher has a vision for the University of Cincinnati, but Bob Huggins isn't in the picture. On Friday, the president unveiled UC-21, a description of how the university will move forward. One of her goals is to raise academic standards, including entrance exam scores. "It would raise the caliber of students recruited as student athletes as well. All boats will rise," Dr. Zimpher said. But, will the Huggins boat sink? Oscar robertson says the board of trustees, inlcuding chairman Phil Cox, fully support Nancy's handling of Huggins. More at www.wcpo.com/
May 21, 200520 yr "My job is to articulate the future of the university and get people moving in the right direction. I am confident that an informed public knows what i'm talking about," said Dr. Zimpher. I have no idea what she's talking about.
December 30, 200519 yr Early in the season, I would have told you that I thought UC would come in dead last in the Big East. However, they've been playing really well as of late and I think they may be able to get into the middle of the pack somewhere. Will it be enough? I don't know. They're 9th in the RPI now and their schedule is going to continue to be tough...so maybe 17 wins will get them in. They have 9 now. Schedule readies UC for Big East play By Bill Koch Enquirer staff writer The University of Cincinnati basketball team hit the practice floor Thursday afternoon boasting a lofty No. 9 ranking in the Rating Percentage Index against a schedule rated the nation's 10th most difficult. Both numbers likely will take a hit after today's 7 p.m. game against North Carolina A&T at Fifth Third Arena. The Aggies, who shoot just 37.3 percent and allow nearly 83 points per game, have yet to win in nine tries and are ranked No. 322 among 334 Division I teams in the RPI. Not only has the competition steeled UC (10-2) for conference play, the Bearcats' success against it has placed them in a position to challenge for their 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance if they enjoy only moderate success in the Big East. "I'm happy through 12 games to be sitting here 10-2 having survived this," said UC interim head coach Andy Kennedy. "I'm hoping it will pay dividends." RPI RATINGS TOP 10 1. Duke 2. Memphis 3. December 31, 200519 yr I caught their two games out at the Las Vegas Classic. It was a blast to watch them play in a high school gym. They had a nail biter against LSU. But the win against Dayton was sweet. The stands where filled with 2/3 Dayton fans and they were obnoxious a**holes. If I heard "our good boys can handle these thugs from the hood" one more time . . . I took this pic it was so sweet a win. They also covered the spread in both games. ;-)
January 8, 200619 yr I've been on a natural high since the UC Bearcats came back against Marquette. What a fun underdog to root for! UConn is on deck.
January 11, 200619 yr Cincinnati sports are cursed. I am convinced. First Kenyon, then Griffey every year hes been here practically, then Palmer, and now Kirkland. I feel bad for the guy; hes never gonna be able to play at UC again, as hes played in too many games to red shirt this season. I think now they only have 8 players on scholarship. If Kirkland would have stayed healthy, they could have made an impact in the Big East. Now we will have to see. I guess atleast its not White or Hicks.
January 11, 200619 yr Cincy isn't even the most cursed sport town in Ohio, much less the nation. So quit your whinning. :-D
January 13, 200619 yr Kenyon Martin's broken leg was a killer. But I think the worst was Tim Krumrie's breaking his leg in the Super Bowl circa 1989. He was the heart and soul of the defense at the time. Cincinnati team's in playoff runs is a nerve-racking experience.
March 28, 200619 yr From http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060325/SPT0201/603250393/1016 Former players applaud choice of Cronin Seen as fitting with tradition By Kevin Goheen Post staff reporter Young Cameron Buford will be seeing a lot more of his godfather in the coming years. The 6-year-old son of former University of Cincinnati basketball player Anthony Buford will get that chance because his father's alma mater hired Cameron's godfather, Mick Cronin, late Thursday night to become the program's 26th head coach. The close relationship that Cronin and Buford share is emblematic of the new coach's relationship with the university, Buford said Friday afternoon after Cronin was officially introduced in a press conference at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center. Buford wasn't the only former player in attendance Friday and he wasn't the only one who hailed Cronin's hiring as positive and significant in healing the wounds caused by the school's firing of Bob Huggins.
March 28, 200619 yr From http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060328/SPT0201/603280336/1035/SPT Cincinnati State star says he'll play at UC By C. Trent Rosecrans Post staff reporter John Williamson always wanted to be a University of Cincinnati Bearcat and next season he'll get that wish. Williamson, who averaged a double-double in each of his two seasons at Cincinnati State, said he is going to commit to UC. The 6-foot-6 forward is one of the top junior college players in the nation, according to Brad Franz of Mullen's Roundball Review, a JUCO scouting service.
March 29, 200619 yr This sounds like the beginning of many good things to come out of the Cronin era. There are grumblings that he also has connections with OJ Mayo and Bill Walker. They have also stated recently that they still are interested in playing in Cincinnati.
April 12, 200619 yr Downey leaving UC BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER Freshman point guard Devan Downey’s decision to leave the University of Cincinnati after one season will deprive UC fans of the chance to watch one of the more dynamic players in the basketball program’s recent history for the next three years. But UC coach Mick Cronin said Tuesday he’s been preparing to move forward without Downey since he got the job on March 23. More at http://news.enquirer.com/
April 12, 200619 yr I say good ridance!!! He told the Cincinnati public that he had planned on staying at UC, while at the same time he was asking Cronin for options to look around. What the hell is that about? If you dont want to play here anymore because your beloved Andy Kennedy is gone.....THEN SAY SO!!!! Dont lie to me and the rest of the Bearcat faithful. You must really hate UC to decide to leave and lose a year of eligibility when you will obviously not play in the NBA. Nice job at blowing your limited years left in this sport. Mick has some good guys coming in next year, and I cant wait to see what he can do with a full year of recruiting! Good Bye double D....and Good Ridance!
April 12, 200619 yr He is not relay blowing anything, this will be a sortoff red shirt year he will still have 3 years left to complete after sitting out one year. I wish him the best off Luck and don't blame him for leaving.
April 12, 200619 yr I do blame him and have lost respect for him as well!! He said that he like the city, the fans, and the school. Well if that is true then why are you leaving. Dont BS me!!!!!! Downey is full of crap and I'm growing tired of athletes who pile the crap up at press conferences. If you like the city, people, and school...then stay here and start something you can be proud of. Dont tell me you like it here soooooo much, and then the next minute say that you are leaving because "you want to be closer to home"....isnt this your home now????? Thanks for the letdown Devan!!!
April 12, 200619 yr not when everyone on the team that he like or respected is gone. Its a brand new program, and he didnt sign up for that when comming out of high school, he is what 19, and 19 year old change thier mind, move on and respect the man for what he did the one year he was at cincy.
April 18, 200619 yr Guard signs with UC BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER Jamual Warren is looking for a fresh start. He hopes to find it at a basketball program that’s doing the same thing. A 6-foot-2, 195-pound guard from Globe Institute of Technology in New York, Warren signed a letter-of-intent Friday with the University of Cincinnati, which released the news Monday. Warren, 22, averaged 22.2 points, 5.9 assists and 3.7 steals last season at Globe Institute, which finished ranked No. 12 nationally, and was the Region XV Player of the Year. He is the third player to sign with UC head coach Mick Cronin. More at http://news.enquirer.com/
April 20, 200619 yr Cronin adds Harmony guard BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER Rodney Crawford, the head basketball coach at Harmony Community School, isn't predicting that Harmony guard Deonta Vaughn will be as good as Steve Logan, who was a first-team All-American at the Univerisity of Cincinnati. But Crawford does see a resemblance. "He has the body and the shooting ability of Steve Logan," said Crawford, who played with Logan at UC in 2001 and 2002. "But he's a little taller than Logan." The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Vaughn, who averaged 17.4 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds this past season at Harmony, orally committed to UC Wednesday afternoon. April 20, 200619 yr Do you think these signings will make UC as good as last season, better than last season or worse than last season?
April 20, 200619 yr I don't think so. They still have a short lineup with no true shoot blocker and they are still i nthe Big East. :(
April 20, 200619 yr The Prez must be going crazy with all these unDuke-like signings of junior college players.
April 25, 200619 yr Point guard excited about UC Junior college player the fifth to sign with Cronin, Bearcats BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER The University of Cincinnati basketball program Tim Crowell signed a letter-of-intent with Monday is not the same program Bob Huggins presided over for 16 years. But Crowell said that doesn't mean the Bearcats are going to stop winning. A 6-foot-2, 185-pound point guard from Midland (Texas) College and Albuquerque, N.M., Crowell is the fourth guard to sign with UC during the spring signing period and the fifth player to sign with the Bearcats since Mick Cronin took over as head coach March 23. Crowell, a first-team all Western Junior College Athletic Conference selection, averaged 11 points, 4.2 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 3.0 steals last season for a team that went 27-6. Midland won 53 games in two years with Crowell running the point. More at http://news.enquirer.com/
May 9, 200619 yr UC: No room for UD Bearcats AD Thomas: Flyers could return in future BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER One of the University of Cincinnati's most familiar opponents won't be on the Bearcats' basketball schedule next season. For the first time since 1999-2000, UC will not play area rival Dayton. The Bearcats have played the Flyers 89 times since the two schools first met in 1906-07. UC holds a 59-30 edge in the series. UC athletic director Mike Thomas said because of "the diversity of our schedule," there wasn't room on the Bearcats' non-league schedule, which includes such powers as Ohio State and Memphis, both of which could be ranked among the top 5 at the start of next season. But Thomas said he and UD athletic director Ted Kissell have agreed to have "an ongoing dialogue" about playing each other in the future. More at http://news.enquirer.com/
May 19, 200619 yr When was the last time that UC had a real, legitimate "big man"? From the 5/19/06 Enquirer: Bearcats eye 7-foot-3 center BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER If all goes well during the next day or so, the University of Cincinnati basketball program could land the tallest player in school history. Hasheem Thabeet, a 7-foot-3, 265-pound center from Cypress Community School in Houston, arrived on campus Thursday to make an official recruiting visit. He also has visited Connecticut. Louisville, Miami (Fla.) and Southern California are the other three schools on his list of finalists, according to Cypress coach Mark McClanahan, who said Thabeet will decide after he finishes his UC visit if he wants to check out the other schools. Thabeet, a 19-year-old from Tanzania, has been playing basketball for only 2½ years and has been in the United States for about a year. He averaged 16 points, four blocked shots and just fewer than 10 rebounds a game last season at Cypress. More at http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060519/SPT0101/605190354/-1/rss
May 24, 200619 yr Williams could join Bearcats Ex-Longhorn is expected to visit UC BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER Forward Mike Williams, a McDonald's All-American who just secured his release from Texas, is scheduled to visit the University of Cincinnati this week. Williams is expected to be in Cincinnati by Thursday, Mark Komara, his former AAU coach, confirmed Tuesday night. "He's also interested in Louisville," said Komara, who indicated that Alabama also might be in the running depending on how things unfold. The UC visit is first on his list. May 28, 200619 yr We got him. Williams chooses Bearcats BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER The University of Cincinnati added a McDonald's All-American to its basketball program Saturday when Texas transfer Mike Williams said he will enroll at UC. Williams, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward from Camden, Ala., visited UC from Thursday through Saturday. He said he chose the Bearcats largely because of head coach Mick Cronin. Leaving Texas, he said, was not an easy decision. "No matter what place you're leaving from, it's going to be hard," he said. "But ... I just figured I needed a fresh start." Williams was a Parade Magazine third-team All-American at Wilcox Central High School and was rated the No. 18 prospect in the country by TheInsiderHoops.com. He'll have to sit out next season under NCAA rules for transfers and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2007-08. July 3, 200618 yr Juco standout commits to UC 6-foot-10 post player Hall rated No. 4 in country BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER First-year University of Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin has been widely praised in basketball circles for the recruiting job he has done since he was hired in March, but he may have pulled off his most impressive coup on Sunday when he landed one of the top junior college players in the country. Hernol Hall, a 6-foot-10 post player from Lon Morris (Texas) College, confirmed Sunday that he has committed to UC. He'll have two years of eligibility remaining beginning this season. July 4, 200618 yr Cronin's recruits praised Group ranked 5th-best overall BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER Those University of Cincinnati basketball fans who thought they were in for a rough season during the transition to new head coach Mick Cronin might be in for a pleasant surprise. Cronin, who took over for interim head coach Andy Kennedy on March 23, has put together a seven-player recruiting class for next season that has been ranked fifth-best in the country by Clark Francis of the Hoop Scoop recruiting service. July 5, 200618 yr 5th best recruiting class in the nation?...can't wait to see how we do this year....GO CATS! :-D
July 5, 200618 yr Do you think these signings will make UC as good as last season, better than last season or worse than last season? Now that the signing period is beginning to wrap up, I would say BETTER than last season.
July 6, 200618 yr I agree...and i can't wait for future years as well.....5th best recruiting class next year!!!!!!
July 17, 200618 yr This kind of sucks. Only one Louisville game and no Marquette? Notre Lame? UC-Louisville rivalry takes hit Schools will play just once in Big East in 2006-07 BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER There's only one game against long-time rival Louisville and none against either Marquette or traditional Big East power Connecticut, but the University of Cincinnati's 2006-07 Big East basketball schedule includes a first-time meeting in Cincinnati against Notre Dame. This season's so-called mirror opponents are West Virginia, Rutgers and Georgetown, so UC will play those three schools both at home and on the road. July 17, 200618 yr I kinda like it.....I've grown tired of the repetitive schedule that they have had. New conference, new opponents. UC only plays XU once a year...and that works out all right.
July 18, 200618 yr I can only stand having biased refs at Crosstown once a year, any more than that and basketball would just suck.
July 18, 200618 yr It's not the new opponents that I mind. I do like the Big East matchups MUCH better than some of those dogs on the C-USA schedule. I guess I'd just like to see 2 Louisville games a year, and I always enjoy seeing the UC-Marquette matchup. I'll quit bitching. It's just for one year.
July 18, 200618 yr I guess I'd just like to see 2 Louisville games a year, and I always enjoy seeing the UC-Marquette matchup. I'll quit bitching. It's just for one year. they still have a chance to meet in the big east conf tournament, plus I think that this will put more importance on the regular season game, and playing Louisville three time a year can suck esp. when both teams are usually good.
July 26, 200618 yr Tilford is gone...transfering to "another Div 1 school"....i had heard this a few days ago but it was official today...he wasn't AMAZING like Downey but he was a decent point guard...so can someone tell me what our roster looks like...the only "good" person returning is McGowan...could be an interesting year...
July 26, 200618 yr I dont know what happened....but my post about Tilford dissapeared?!?!? But anyways, this is a good thing for the team: It gives the Bearcats one more available scholarship and Tilford sucked. There are a few guys that are interested in UC...and have good talent! I feel that this is a good move for both parties: Tilford can get some more playing time at a smaller program...and UC can improve its roster!

July 27, 200618 yr I guess they signed a 7footer from poland, I dont have any details and this is mostly word of mouth but I know they were looking into this kid since may. I guess he cleared the ncaa stuff and now they (UC) signed him.
August 9, 200618 yr UC adds to '07 class Houston high school player compares to former Bearcat Williams BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER The University of Cincinnati's newest basketball recruit is a "hip-hop version of Field Williams." That's how Jim Hicks of the RCS Sports scouting service in Houston described Larry Davis, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Houston's Hastings High School, who orally committed to UC on Tuesday. He's the second member of UC head coach Mick Cronin's 2007 recruiting class, joining forward Mike Williams, a transfer from Texas, who will be at UC this season but must sit out until 2007-08 under NCAA rules for transfers. Davis, who's expected to sign in November, averaged 14 points, six rebounds and 4.5 steals as a junior at Hastings, which is expected to be one of the top-ranked teams in Texas this season. He shot 42 percent from 3-point range. More at http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060809/SPT0101/608090354/-1/CINCI
October 10, 200618 yr Soph commits to Bearcats La Salle's McElroy gives oral pledge TRENT ROSECRANS / CINCINNATI POST October 10, 2006 CINCINNATI - On Friday, La Salle High School sophomore Danny McElroy told Lancers head coach Dan Fleming he wanted to commit to the University of Cincinnati. Fleming, in his 17th year as head coach at La Salle, had never had a sophomore who wanted to commit so early, so he told McElroy to take the weekend to sleep on it. The 6-foot-7 forward came back Monday and told Fleming he still wanted to be a Bearcat, so the two called UC coach Mick Cronin and gave him the word he was committing. McElroy, 16, gave his word that in two years he'll sign with the Bearcats. Oral commitments are non-binding and players cannot sign binding scholarship players until their senior year of high school. Cronin and his staff are prohibited from commenting on McElroy until a binding letter of intent is signed, which will be in November 2008 at the earliest. October 19, 200618 yr A Bearcat homecoming Martin's moved on following Huggins flap BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER October 19, 2006 CINCINNATI - Remember how Kenyon Martin said he no longer wanted to be introduced as a University of Cincinnati product because he was ticked off about Bob Huggins' ouster? Word never got to the people at U.S. Bank Arena. "From the University of Cincinnati, KEN-yon Martin!!!" was the introduction Wednesday, and the roar was fitting for a returning star. "Cincinnati - they love their Bearcats," Martin said. Martin was back in town as a member of the Denver Nuggets for an exhibition game against the Indiana Pacers. November 2, 200618 yr UC isn't too shabby Rebuilt team shows promise in exhibition PAUL DAUGHERTY / CINCINNATI ENQUIRER November 2, 2006 CINCINNATI - Well, who knows? Putting an opinion on Mick Cronin's first game as UC's basketball coach is like judging a beauty contest in the dark. The Bearcats beat Northern Kentucky by 46 points Wednesday in an exhibition game that never was a game. Given that we haven't seen this group really play - Cedric McGowan is the only guy we could pick out of a lineup - we'll have to trust the coach on this one. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061102/COL03/611020352/1062/SPT Bearcats overwhelm NKU Cronin happy with Bearcats' hustle, shooting vs. D-II Norse BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER November 2, 2006 CINCINNATI - Northern Kentucky entered Wednesday's exhibition game against the University of Cincinnati with more Division I experience than the Bearcats, but it was quickly evident that the Division II Norse don't have as much Division I talent. Playing without 6-foot-10 post players Hernol Hall and Adam Hrycaniuk - both of whom are still waiting for an NCAA ruling on their eligibility - UC sprinted past NKU 87-41 before 8,089 fans at Fifth Third Arena. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061102/SPT0101/611020346/1062/SPT
November 17, 200618 yr Another '07 UC recruit BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER November 17, 2006 CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati basketball coach Mick Cronin has landed his third recruit for the class of 2007. Kenny Belton, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound post player from Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C., has scheduled a press conference for this afternoon to announce that he has signed a letter-of-intent with UC. He averaged 14.7 points last season as a junior at Dudley, the same school that produced former UC player Eric Hicks, who completed his eligibility last season ranked 23rd on the school’s career scoring list with 1,231 points. “He’s a big body kid, a true low-post guy,” recruiting analyst Dave Telep said of Belton. “Physically, he’ll be ready to get in there and mix it up. That’s his biggest asset. He’ll be physically ready for college basketball. You could strap a set of shoulder pads on him and he could play football for the Bearcats.
