Your analysis sounds reasonable. I don't follow basketball closely, TBH. But it's good to see the Bearcats at 19-2. Too bad they had to lose to Xavier to get that fire in their belly. Hopefully Jackson's back to play vs. Louisville.

Cincinnati ran some great offense against the Cardinals. They shot 63.2 percent in the second half and 48.9 percent for the game, in part because they successfully attacked the Louisville press but also as the product of some pretty passing plays and even, perhaps, the first successful execution of the Dribble Drive Motion offense the state of Kentucky has seen this season. Over the past three games, they shot 50.3 percent from the field.

 

“A lot of people don’t understand,” Kilpatrick said. “We have a lot more weapons.”

 

Sophomore forward Shaq Thomas attacked eagerly on offense for a second straight game and scored 11 points. Freshman point guard Troy Caupain is the best passer the program has had at the position since — who? Puffy Kennedy in 1981? Steve Logan, Kenny Satterfield, Nick Van Exel — they were scoring points. Caupain had only one assist, but Cronin lauded him for successfully inbounding the ball “with all the holding and grabbing and no-calling going on” by the Louisville press.

Make it 14 straight wins, and UC is now ranked 7th in the AP -  their highest ranking since the days of the legendary Bob Huggins.

Back to #7. This should be a good game Saturday vs. Louisville. Glad it's at home.

Hopefully they can easily beat UCF.  UC always seems to play to the level of the teams they are playing.

How they stack up:  On offense, Louisville ranks an impressive 9th.  UC checks in at an even more impressive 7th.  This will be a defensive standoff and points will be at a premium.  However, on offense, Louisville is 12th and UC is 108th.  Big edge to the Cards.  Three teams rank in the Pomeroy's top 15 for both offense and defense:  Florida, Syracuse, and...yes, Louisville.  Good company to have.

 

More on that offense: The Cards can score.  Even though they are playing clearly over-matched opponents most nights, they own their largest MOV through 25 games in the history of the program. 

 

Sean Kilpatrick:  A key to beating Louisville will be SK scoring 28 points and UC shooting 17-18 from the line again.  Kirkpatrick was spectacular and the difference maker. Consider this as you reflect on his key free throws at the end of the last meeting, Louisville had three more field goals in that game. 

 

Turnovers:  UC will also need to limit turnovers.  Ville scored 26 points of 20 UC TO's. The Louisville press will be a factor as will UC's halfcourt D, which was stifling last meeting.

 

Rebounds:  Louisville will be focused on not getting destroyed on the boards as in the first meeting.  Jackson, Thomas and Rubles will give Harrell, Van Treese and Mathiang trouble again.  This Cards will need rebounding effort our of Rozier and Blackshear to matchup.

 

Momentum: Cincinnati cannot...CANNOT let Louisville go on runs of 14-0 and 19-8.  UC fans won't come to watch their own team but they do like to see the defending champs in the house.  They'll be loud and the Bearcats can feed off the great energy.

 

Key Wildcard Stats: Louisville 16 assists.

 

Prediction:

Pitino teams seems to develop a chemistry circa Valentine's Day.  The Cardinals pull the road upset and earn a signature win.

Going to be a close game. Ville was able to generate turnovers against UC in game 1. In the first half Ville missed some easy shots, and they

are best setting up the trap after made baskets, which they did in the second half. UC has good ball handlers but not great. UC is quicker in the post,

they need to attack the glass on offense when they break the trap, get fouls on Ville. UC is over achieving this year so far (similar to Huggs teams),

but I think 2 seasons from now UC will look more like a legit Syracuse, Kansas type of roster. Hopefully we can still play OOC, better than that

under achieving Memphis gig.

Right now we're projected to be a 4 seed and could potentially play Wichita State in the Sweet Sixteen.

UC had their first big win last night against #19 San Diego State University. They won 71-62 in Overtime. They have improved to 7-2 (losing to Ole Miss and Nebraska). Second in the American Athletic Conference behind Tulane (8-1). No one has played an in-conference game yet, so it's really early to know anything for sure about how the season may shape up.

That was a big win last night. All 3 bigs, who are first year players here, played well. Another big game Saturday against VCU.

But you can forgive the Bearcats for the sub-par performance.  Just 90 minutes before the game, 43-year-old head coach Mick Cronin told his team that he would not be on the sideline.  Cronin was diagnosed with an unruptured aneurysm and will be sidelined indefinitely while doctors decide how to treat it.

That was one the better games I have seen UC play in some time. They dominated that game and shut down the leading scorers for

NC State, on the road. If they can make open shots they are going to win often. Cobb and Deberry were steals via the JUCO ranks.

UC announced Dec. 20 that Cronin had a brain aneurysm, and the coach has missed three games since. Friday, the update from UC on Cronin's condition was that he has a non-life threatening vascular condition known as arterial dissection. His treatment and recovery includes rest, medication and keeping a normal blood pressure.

 

Cronin's condition was discovered in mid-December during a routine workup scheduled after a complaint of lingering headaches. He has missed three games since, with UC going 2-1 under associate head coach Larry Davis.

Despite missing Cronin, UC is doing pretty well. They are 11-3, and 2-0 in conference play, which is enough to get them a 39 RPI ranking. They are giving up just 54 points per game on average, 7th best in NCAA.
