UC really needed that win.  I know they're probably going to get destroyed by UK, but advancing past a good and very big Purdue team without Ellis was a huge accomplishment.  The Bearcats seem to be like the Bengals these days.  Consistently good enough to get to the post season, but they never do much when they get there.  This program has an excellent history, and I've been looking for them to make the next step back to excellence for a while.  Wins like the one last night certainly help.  Go UC!

  • UC Basketball looks like it’s BACK! They are landing some monster recruits including a top 30 last week and this years team is currently ranked #14 in the country.    https://www.cincinnati.

This is obviously not official but the seeding predictions could create an interesting first two rounds for local teams:

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

The prediction is Xavier as a #2 seed facing UAB, and should they win they'd face the winner of a game between 7 seed Dayton and 10 seed Cincinnati.

UC is currently #6 in the country and their KenPom rank is #4.  With Auburn's loss tonight, the Bearcats are projected to be a 2 seed.  This could be the year they finally have some tourney success!

I'm sorry, but the ranking is inflated. They have not beat a top 25 team.

We'll see how they do against Wichita State

UC's resume does not look too shabby on the NCAA's team sheet as of now (page 8 of this PDF):

Cincinnati is 4-2 in Tier 1, and those 2 losses are their only loses. It's hard to argue that a team like Purdue is any better than Cincinnati right now. The City of Cincinnati might very well have two top 5 teams next week. It's possible the city ends up having two number 1 seeds in the tournament.

You haven't been watching them if you think that.  Or you're a Xavier fan.  :P

In today's "pre-selection" show, UC was picked to be a 2 seed.  Just keep winning!

One of the most overrated teams in basketball.  One of the first real teams the Bearcats faced, and they lost at home.  Two in a row, and one to an unranked team.

^ Well, given the events of the past week they're, at most, the second most overrated team in the state of Ohio.

^The Buckeyes aren't even worth mentioning.  They never should have been ranked to begin with, but same goes for UC.

^ Well, they both should be ranked somewhere. OSU is a top 20 team and UC is a top 10 team, IMO. The entire top 25 is a sea of mediocrity this year, which should actually make for a good tournament. I'd have to look back, but it seems to me like top 25 teams lost almost as many games as they won this week.

#10 Cincinnati won at #11 Wichita State to clinch the regular season American title.

I feel much better about our tournament hopes now.

You know it's a good year for UC when they can win a close away game with a noon tip off against a ranked team.

Those are four things that never happen together.

UC beat #21 Houston 56-55 to win the American Conference Tournament.

The Bearcats were selected as a two seed in the NCAA tournament.

Cincy sports for you. The game ended on a 32-8 run.

^Its easy to say cincy sports, but this tournament is an absolute mess.  It is every year.  A great mess.  But 75% of the teams in the tournament cannot close.  The buckeyes had a late lead, the gators, houston, Michigan State, Tennessee.  I dont understand why when teams are up late, they dont maximize defensive intensity. Choke em out.  Instead, the losing team ends up with wide open shots.  and they get right back in the game.  Nuts.

Mick Cronin left UC in 2019 to coach UCLA.  This season UCLA reached the Final Four.  As for Cronin's replacement - John Brannen, who previously coached at Northern Kentucky - things are not going so well:

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/31189472/cincinnati-coach-john-brannen-leave-amid-investigation

UC put Brannen on paid leave pending an investigation after six players decided to transfer last month.  The school announced March 26 that it had launched an investigation amid reports that a rift between Brannen and players had led to the requested transfers.  Among the six who entered the transfer portal during a week in March were four members of the 2020 freshman class.

The Bearcats were 20-10 in Brannen's first season in 2019-20 and finished 12-11 this season.

They take on #13 Arkansas tonight in the final game of the "Hall of Fame Classic."

Not bad for a team that a few months ago didn't have a coach and had - was it 4 scholarship players left on the team?

Welp after beating Xavier and Dayton and big recruiting news the men’s basketball team is looking like a flop opening big 12 play with 2 losses to bottom of the league teams. I’m a big Wes Miller fan but it’s not looking good for him. I can tell you donors are starting to get uneasy as the coach just can’t seem to break through. Hoping for a turn around or he is unfortunately going to be on a hot seat next season. As will the athletic director especially if football is bad again.
