November 22, 200618 yr ^This is clearly not a true representation of the actual game/team. Were you at/did you watch the game?? Wofford shot the lights out..true we left too many people open, but they were hitting threes like nobody's business. On top of that we had officials that were calling carries almost every trip down the court...oh and I think Wofford got to the line at about a 2:1 / 3:1 clip!!! This game was outrageous....this epitmizes why I hate the NCAA (the underdogs always get the edge/NCAA always hates on UC)!!!!
November 22, 200618 yr this epitmizes why I hate the NCAA (the underdogs always get the edge/NCAA always hates on UC)!!!! Sounds like whining ;)
November 22, 200618 yr Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go to the game, but I heard from several friends who went that the refs were whistle happy. They said that the ref sometimes called foul before the foul actually occured. Did anyone else who went notice this?
November 22, 200618 yr i think that by the '08 season, they will be legit again and by '09, they will be a powerhouse again. cronin will do the damn thing
November 22, 200618 yr UC hit more threes than they did though. Face it, this team has serious weaknesses. I have every confidence in Mick to get things done, but this is going to be a long, long year.

Don't get me wrong...Wofford is a good team who had a great shooting night, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the field of 65 in March. But they still have no business beating UC at UC. This is no disrespect to Wofford, this is a slam against UC.
December 14, 200618 yr Cronin wants to play OSU every year BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] December 13, 2006 CINCINNATI - The long drought comes to an end Saturday. After nearly forty-four years, the University of Cincinnati will play Ohio State in basketball in the John Wooden Tradition at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. UC coach Mick Cronin, who wasn’t even born when the Bearcats knocked off OSU 71-59 on March 24, 1962, to win their second straight NCAA title in the most recent meeting between the two schools, hopes that regardless of what happens Saturday the wait for the next meeting won’t be nearly so long. In fact, he says there’s no reason why UC and OSU shouldn’t play every year, alternating between Cincinnati and Columbus. “I’d like to play them home and home,” Cronin said. OSU athletic director Gene Smith apparently agrees with Cronin. He told The Columbus Dispatch last week that he would like to see the two schools play each other every year. UC already has an annual rivalry game on its schedule against Xavier, but Cronin said there would always be room for another high-stakes rivalry with Ohio State. December 26, 200618 yr alum update: Maxiell got some big minutes in lieu of Rasheed's ankle injury. 17 points and 12 rebounds in 33 minutes http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=261217008 Nice to see Maxiell contributing in the NBA. (Just too bad it is on a team like the Pistons) Didn't see the game last Saturday but it looks like Cincy had a nice win over NC State.
January 22, 200718 yr It would have been even better to combine that with the win we should of had over Syracuse...that could've been two nice wins in a row (woulda, coulda, shoulda) :|
January 22, 200718 yr always so negative rando....cheer up. . a win over pitt is coming soon!!!
January 22, 200718 yr wishful thinking...I'll be happy if you're right! I'll be there in support nonetheless.
March 1, 200718 yr Were you even at the game?!?!? I didn't see you in the band (cough quitter) or in the stands...did I just miss you??
March 6, 200718 yr Like I've said before...we've gotta wait and see what happens with Mick Cronin. Sure this first year was tough with only 2 returning players (1 contributor) and a team assembled after the recruiting season. Now that the dust has settled, the top notch recruits are looking at UC! Bearcats on recruit's list UC notebook BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] March 6, 2007 CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati is one of four schools considered to be the leaders in the recruiting competition for Anthony McClain, a 6-foot-11, 220-pound center from National Christian Academy in Fort Washington, Md. The others are Connecticut, Florida and Tennessee. McClain is the highest-ranked high school center in the country who has not committed, according to Rivals. Com. He's the sixth-ranked center in the country overall. More at http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070306/SPT0101/703060339/1078/COL02
March 6, 200718 yr Meanwhile...... AK Gets SEC coach of the year down @ 'ole Miss.. (If bearcat fans could take off their Rose Colored Huggins Glasses for a moment they can realize that Zim's biggest mistake was letting Kennedy go --)
March 7, 200718 yr Oh great...someone dragging in Zimpfer again. This move was made by the athletic department. Anybody can walk into a team full of players and win. AK came in with the leftover Huggins recruits...the same down at 'ole Miss. Please hold your judgment until he starts recruiting...he hasn't even come close to proving himself yet. If he gets some solid recruits for the next couple of years and keeps 'ole Miss competitive then I'll give it to you, but he surely doesn't deserve all the kudos he is currently getting. And just to clear things up...I've never been a Huggins fan. I'm sorry, but how many years were we at the top of college basketball...and how many times did we get top-notch recruits to come here?? They go to places like OSU, Kansas, and other places out in podunkville. We had some good players (Van Excel, Martin, Logan) all of whom were not highly touted or highly sought after players. It took 2-3 years to develop those players into actual studs. UC now has a coach with a record of attracting the attention of those top-notch HS recruits...and guess what he is making an effort to get them here! So maybe I am overly optimistic, but I am sure glad that we might have a chance at some 4 year studs/graduates now.
March 7, 200718 yr Ummm, AK did not walk in here w/ a team full of players...Since the Huggins issue was drawn out for a year or so, recruitng took a hit. I think AK only had available 8 scholarship players -- remember how short handed he was? There were quite a few walk ons on his team, including Conner Barwin. He was close to getting BEAST coach of the year (or shoulda been close). Not sure how many players he had at Ole Miss, but he must be fieleding the same team that didn't have a winning record last year. I think the descision to not hire AK was to clean the slate of Huggins, that if came from the top, I don't know. My point was, to wish people would shut up about Huggins, he was either gone then or shortly after then. Shoulda been, will give you two years and AK will be your successor. I like Mick, give him time.....heckuva recruiter. He doesn't deserve what's been said about him in places.
March 7, 200718 yr Uh...AK had a team chuck full with seniors. One of the highest rates in college bball that year. He had his whole starting lineup set and ready to go for the most part (White, Hicks, Muhammad, McGowan, Kirkland). Not to mention he had a couple of solid performers off the bench. I was never too impressed with his coaching ability, and believed that we should have been in the NCAA tourny last year...without controversy! He, like Huggins, let me down. The players seemed to have little discipline and we lacked any emotion on the court (just like Huggy Bear). I wish them both well, but I am glad that UC has parted ways with both AK and BH!
March 7, 200718 yr the theme the whole year was the short bench, Kirkland was out for the season in early Jan. just in time for the height of the conference play. No matter how many seniors AK he had, he still had to raid the football team for players to help. I doubt you would find any Bearcat fan that would say he had a roster chuck full of players ---you need more than a starting five to play B-East Bball
March 7, 200718 yr Exactly...it was a none too impressive year either. Sure they had a tough non-conference schedule, but how many good Big East teams did they beat. Everytime they had a tough opponent...they went down. He had just enough talent to win the games they did, but in the close games that always seemed to go the other way...we didn't have it in us to finish the job. IMO, that reflects back on the coaching staff.
March 7, 200718 yr I get the feeling that UC is going to be back at premier status a lot quicker than originally thought UC lands recruit BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] March 7, 2007 CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati basketball program received an oral commitment today from the top scorer in Florida. Alvin Mitchell, a 6-foot-4 guard from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Ft. Lauderdale, said he chose UC over Virginia Tech, St. John’s and Pittsburgh. He visited UC the weekend of Jan. 20 and watched the Bearcats beat West Virginia in overtime, one of their two Big East wins this past season. Mitchell is the fifth player to commit to UC for next season. He joins 6-foot-8 forward Kenny Belton from Salem, Va.; 6-foot-5 forward Rashad Bishop from Newark, N.J., and 6-foot-3 shooting guard Larry Davis from Houston, all of whom signed letters-of-intent last November. Mitchell and 6-foot-7 Jason Henry from West Memphis, Ark., are expected to sign on April 11, the first day of the spring signing period. March 7, 200718 yr So should we be impressed that we beat out those schools? Looks like we was interested in coming north one way or another. I hope he helps.
March 8, 200718 yr Yes we should be impressed. We were able to recruit a guy and land him here over a school like Pittsburgh who is one of the top teams right now. The other two schools aren't as big of a deal, but still had better seasons than the Bearcats...I'm encouraged by Cronin's recruiting abilities!
March 11, 200718 yr UC Clermont men win national title Dunn, Brown lead Cougars' attack BY KYLE BROWN | [email protected] March 11, 2007 CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati-Clermont men's basketball team won the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II championship by defeating Penn State-DuBois 81-72. Junior Stefan Dunn was named the tournament's most valuable player after scoring 24 points in the championship game, and sophomore Maurice Brown (Deer Park) added 19 points. The Cougars overcame a 40-31 halftime deficit to win the tournament in only their third year as a USCAA member. UC Clermont ends the season with a 28-10 record. March 13, 200718 yr It will be sad to see her go  She was truly a class act! Pirtle to retire as UC coach BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER March 13, 2007 CINCINNATI - Laurie Pirtle announced her retirement Tuesday after 21 years as the University of Cincinnati’s women’s basketball coach. The Bearcats were 15-14 this past season, 6-10 in the Big East Conference, where they finished 11th among 16 teams and lost in the first round of the Big East Tournament. Pirtle declined a request for an interview Tuesday, but scheduled a news conference for Wednesday. UC athletic director Mike Thomas said in a news release that he would no comment on the coaching search until a new coach is hired. Pirtle, 48, won more games than any other UC women’s basketball coach, posting a record of 310-301. Four of her teams – 1989, 1999, 2002 and 2003 – played in the NCAA Tournament. Only the 2002 team advanced past the first round, losing in the second round to South Carolina. Full story at http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070313/SPT0101/303130064
April 4, 200718 yr UC hires basketball coach BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] April 4, 2007 UPTOWN - The University of Cincinnati will name J. Kelley Hall as its women’s basketball coach today at a 2 p.m. press conference. Hall led Louisiana-Lafayette to a 25-9 record this past season, the best season in the school’s history. The Rajin’ Cajuns lost to Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Hall was 86-62 in five seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference. Hall, whose wife Meredith was co-head coach last season, was associate head coach at Louisville in 2002. He replaces Laurie Pirtle, who retired on March 13 after 21 years as UC’s head coach. April 12, 200718 yr Cronin's new class is first-class BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] April 11, 2007 CINCINNATI - Mick Cronin's second University of Cincinnati basketball recruiting class could be one of the nation's top 25. "I think it's a pretty solid class," Jerry Meyer of the Rivals.com recruiting Web site said. "It's a good start for Coach Cronin. If they get signatures from (Jason) Henry and (Alvin) Mitchell, it probably puts them right on the bubble of a top-25 recruiting class. My guess is that it won't get them in, but it puts them right there."
April 16, 200718 yr Big East swayed decision BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] April 16, 2007 CINCINNATI - When he was in the fifth grade, Yancy Gates was already 6-feet-4 and displaying remarkable athleticism for his size. His father, Tony Dees, looked at him and knew he might have something special on his hands. He told Gates then that if he dedicated himself to the game, if he was willing to put in the time and the work, he had the talent to play college basketball and beyond. Gates still has plenty of work ahead of him, but the 6-foot-8, 245-pound Withrow junior has already begun to prove his father right. He formally announced this afternoon at the Cincinnati Public Schools Education Center that he will attend the University of Cincinnati in 2008. His decision to choose UC over Georgetown, Indiana, Xavier and Ohio State is a recruiting coup for the Bearcats and their head coach, Mick Cronin, but it’s also a victory for Gates and his family.
April 16, 200718 yr It's a really good sign if Cronin can keep the best high school talent here. Nice get.
April 19, 200718 yr UC now has what many consider a TOP 25 recruiting class for 2007. Good job Mick. UC adds recruit BY BILL KOCH | [email protected] The University of Cincinnati basketball team that went 11-19 last season had so many weaknesses that its inability to block shots was often overlooked. The Bearcats blocked only 58 shots in 2006-07, down from 193 the year before. During the previous three years, they averaged 196 blocks. That missing defensive dimension could be on its way back next season with the addition of 6-foot-11, 220-pound center Anthony McClain, who committed to UC and head coach Mick Cronin today. April 27, 200718 yr Couple gives $4M to UC basketball, music programs April 26, 2007 | CINCINNATI BUSINESS COURIER CINCINNATI - The founders of a local third-party administration firm have pledged $4 million to the University of Cincinnati's basketball program and the College-Conservatory of Music. Max and Judi Redlich are establishing two trusts, with the proceeds going to support the programs. The couple is giving $3 million to establish the Max E. and Judi S. Redlich Men's Basketball Fund and $1 million to establish the Max E. and Judi S. Redlich Scholarship Fund for CCM. The basketball fund will support scholarships and operational needs for the program and the CCM fund will support scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, according to a news release. The Redlichs founded Cincinnati-based Penco Inc., which administers 401(k) plans, pension plans and profit-sharing plans. Their children and son-in-law now own and operate the company.
May 3, 200718 yr UC not penalized for score May 3, 2007 | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER CINCINNATI - The NCAA on Wednesday made official what the University of Cincinnati anticipated last season: The men's basketball team did not meet the minimum Academic Progress Rate score of 925 for the three-year period that ended in 2005-06. But the failure will not cost the Bearcats a scholarship next season because they did not use all 13 this past season in anticipation of the penalty. The team, coached during that period by Bob Huggins, was the only one in UC's 18 varsity sports that did not meet the APR minimum, posting an 838. UC coach Mick Cronin said both of this past season's seniors, Cedric McGowan and Ron Allen, are expected to graduate on time. Men's golf and men's cross country received perfect scores of 1,000 in 2005-06. Men's cross country's three-year score of 988 was best among UC sports. Football was tied for 13th at 941.
July 13, 200717 yr How can the schedule not have a mirror series for Cincinnati and Louisville?!?!? The Reds always play the Indians in inter-league play...this should be a similar scenario. These two teams should meet twice EVERY year. UC to face Huggins on road BY BILL KOCH | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER July 13, 2007 CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati’s first encounter with former Bearcat coach Bob Huggins will occur in Morgantown, West Virginia. The date has not been determined. The Big East today released the home and away opponents for each of its 16 men’s basketball teams, with the Bearcats scheduled to play Huggins’ new team, West Virginia, on the road. It will be the first time UC has played a Huggins-coached team since his contract was bought out in August 2005. Huggins was the head coach at Kansas State last season.
July 13, 200717 yr I think that the Miami game was probably meant to be listed as being played at US Bank Arena...not Fifth Third Arena.
July 13, 200717 yr ^because UC is doing MU a favor by scheduling them...and they don't want to play at crappy MU for a non-conference game. Much like how all of the terrible non-conference games are at home for the big teams. The "neutral" site is a showing a friendship from UC to MU, because otherwise the game would not happen if UC had to use up a non-conference game against MU at MU.
July 13, 200717 yr they have just as much reason to spell out the Miami game being at Fifth Third as they would if the game were being played at US Bank.
July 13, 200717 yr There is one key difference...NO STUDENT SECTION. I don't even think the season ticket holders get tix to the game.
August 16, 200717 yr Two Top 100 recruits already for '08. It's just a matter of time before the Bearcats are back on top! Top-rated guard commits to UC BY BILL KOCH | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER August 16, 2007 CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati basketball program landed its second recruit of the 2008 recruiting class today when Cashmere Wright announced that he had committed to UC. Wright, a 6-foot, 170-pound point guard from Savannah (Ga.) Urban Christian High School, is ranked No. 75 in his class by Rivals.com, which ranks him as the 11th best point guard in the country. Wright had originally committed to Clemson in February but then reconsidered and reopened the recruiting process.
December 19, 200717 yr Really negative headline, but not so negative news. In all actuality it is really good news for UC, and unfortunate news for FOX 19. Channel 19 dropping UC basketball BY JOHN KIESEWETTER | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER December 18, 2007 UPTOWN - The University of Cincinnati's move to the Big East has cost the Bearcats their local TV contract. After 26 years, WXIX-TV (Channel 19) will stop producing local UC basketball games, after the UC-Miami telecast Dec. 29. "This is purely an economic decision," said John Long, Channel 19 general manager. "While UC's move to the Big East was a terrific move for the university, the caliber of games afforded us (since) the Big East switch has been reduced significantly," he said. The station was losing money on Bearcat basketball, a 10-year contract signed five years ago, he says. Long informed UC officials last week the station was exercising its option to get out of the contract after five years. The agreement also included some football and women's basketball telecasts, and weekly football and basketball coach's shows. Part of the reason is UC's November-December nonconference schedule with few marquee teams such as Belmont, Bowling Green and Fairfield. Another factor is ESPN buying all TV rights for all Big East schools in a six-year deal before the 2006-07 season - except for select games on CBS - although UC's and Louisville's local TV deals were grandfathered in as part of the deal.
January 2, 200817 yr Great win yesterday to start off Big East play. We haven't beat Louisville in Louisville for a while. This team is definitely on the right track and the young guys look GREAT. Can't wait until next year when Bishop, Biggie & Co. have a year under their belt...Vaughn is a Junior...and we have Yancy Gates. Things are looking good.
January 7, 200817 yr The Louisville game was great and the team is getting a lot better rather quickly, but that St. John's game was just disappointing.
January 10, 200817 yr Big win tonight for the bearcats: Cincinnati 74, Syracuse 66 They have 2 Big East wins in three games this season. The bearcats won 2 conference games all of last year.
January 10, 200817 yr They looked really good. Such an inconsistent team, but it's apparent that they have the kind of talent that will eventually challenge for a conference title. I really hope they can make the conference tournament - that would be huge for those guys.
January 11, 200817 yr I really hope they can make the conference tournament - that would be huge for those guys. The Big East has changed the rules around this year and all conference team get into the conference tournament (as they should).
