Some women's basketball news...

UConn assistant new UC coach

Looking to inject life into a struggling women’s basketball program, the University of Cincinnati has hired a coach who knows a lot about winning.  Connecticut assistant coach Jamelle Elliott, an assistant coach at national champion UConn, will be announced Tuesday afternoon as UC’s new head coach, replacing J. Kelley Hall, who was fired April 10 after two years on the job.

Elliott, who’s regarded as an outstanding recruiter, has learned at the feet of one of the game’s masters, having worked under UConn head coach Geno Auriemma for the past 12 years.  She played on the Huskies’ first national title team in 1995 and has had a hand in five others as an assistant, including last season’s perfect 39-0 national title season.  She takes over a UC program that went 14-17 in 2008-09 and finished last in the Big East with a 3-13 record.  In two seasons under Hall, the Bearcats were 26-33, including 7-26 in the Big East.

The Bearcats are 5-0 so far.  Right now they are playing no. 22 Maryland in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational.  (Televised on ESPN for those interested)

and just wrapped up another win vs. a Top 25 team. They do look good with some serious big bodies. Yancy Gates is impressive.

They''ll be on again 10pm against either Gonzaga or Wisconsin. Prefer Gonzaga, I don't like that big ten smell.

The Bearcats are in the Top 25 now.  They are no. 22 in the AP and 24 in the ESPN/USA Today

Glorious!  It's a been a while, hmm?  Certainly not our football and basketball programs at once.

These are good times to live in Cincinnati. Now, we just need the Reds to kick it in gear.

Crosstown shootout is this sunday.  Winking Lizard in downtown Cleveland is hosting a watch party for UC alumni.  Anyone know if it is a joint party with XU alumni assn.?  I usually get together with an XU buddy of mine and I doubt he would want to go if he was the only XU fan surrounded by UC fans.

This game really wasn't as close as the score makes it out to be...the Bearcats led almost the entire game and by double digits in several occasions.  To sum the game up in four words: Stephenson is real good.

Cincinnati stuns No. 10 UConn as Stephenson drains free throws in final second

Associated Press | December 30, 2009

With 10,409 fans holding their breath and the game on the line, Lance Stephenson calmly dribbled the ball, lined up his free throw and made it. Then, he made another.  No freshman nerves there.

Stephenson was fouled with less than a second to play and made both free throws Wednesday night, rallying Cincinnati to a breakthrough 71-69 victory over No. 10 Connecticut in a wild Big East opener for both teams that was settled by the Bearcats' most highly regarded recruit in years.

^Good win for the Bearcats, but they need to learn how to finish games.

The Bearcats improved to 2-0 in Big East play and are now 10-3 overall after they beat Rutgers over the weekend.  They will be playing a very tough opponent in Pittsburgh tonight at 5/3 Arena here in Cincy.  The game will be televised on ESPN at 7pm.

Quick question, did the Bearcat Football Discussion thread get deleted?

^No, look at page 2 of sports (at least as of the time I type this).  No posts since Jan of 2010

This is b-ball news. The Bearcats are doing a tour of Canada's best teams. A mini-tour of 3 or 4 teams. I think they are playing soon which seems like odd timing.

Can UC take another step toward relevancy in one of the best rivalries in college basketball?  This would definitely help after just getting back in the top 25.  UC has a large overall lead in the series, but X has been dominating it lately.

They are definitely going to have plenty of other opportunities considering a third of the top 25 is Big East teams.

Will be interesting, beginning Sunday, against Villanova to see if they can win against one of the Big East's big boys.

I've been to most of the homes games.  UC has dominated everyone they've played, mostly because of the depth.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them trail the Big East powerhouses early on, but hang on and come back in the end.

They've played an easy schedule so far, but they've destroyed everyone that was on it.

Tomorrow (correction) will be especially tough considering they are not playing downtown - this will be at their little on-campus arena.  Villanova rarely loses in this building.

Overall a disappointing game losing by 11, and hopefully they can learn.  The team looked tight in the first half and fell behind big.  At least they played better in the second half.

Funny looking at the beginning of the topic, from years ago. Huggs has already had a sweet 16 and a final four

with WVU since Nancy's hit and run job.

Cronin might have had a job saving week - UC has quietly beaten #16 Louisville and #11 Georgetown (on the road).  Man I hope he is finally on his way getting Bearcat basketball back where it belongs.

This team has done quite well the past few weeks. Just beat #17 Georgetown.

Piss poor performance last night... but in other Big East news:

Nick Lachey Premieres Song For Big East

We all know Nick Lachey is a big sports fan…. so he’s written an anthem for the Big East Conference to debut Saturday during the Big East basketball tournament finals at Madison Square Garden. His song “Last One Standing” was written specifically for the Big East.

“As a Cincinnati native, I have had a passion for college athletics and the University of Cincinnati,” Lachey said in a statement released today. “I have grown a strong affinity to the Big East since it joined the conference, and think that this song represents the true test that these inspiring student-athletes face by competing in this league.”

UC is in the NCAA tournament as a #6 seed in the West Region.  On Thursday, they face #11 Missouri in Washington D.C.

Glad to see the Cats back as a 6 seed.  Missouri will not be an easy game.  The biggest issue I have with the selection committee is they seemed to have created potential match-ups of Big East teams fairly early.  I have not analyzed the field in detail, but there are at least two meetings of Big East teams in the round of 32 with additional Sweet 16 possibilities.  I realize they have 11 teams, but they historically keep conference teams apart as long as possible, and they definitely did not do that with this conference.

Cincy advanced past Missouri 78-63 and was eliminated by #3 seed UCONN 69-58.

Not to shabby to be eliminated from the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament by the eventual national champion UConn Huskies. I'm just glad the championship returned home to the Big East where it belongs.

Kudos to UC BBall

UC basketball team recognized for academic success

The UC men’s basketball team has received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA based on its Academic Progress Rate for the 2009-10 season. The awards are given each year to teams with APR scores among the top 10 percent in each sport. This is the first time any UC sport has received the award.

When Mick Cronin took over as head basketball coach in 2006, the Bearcats faced penalties from the NCAA for academic performance and were stripped of one scholarship.

Do they get gold pants? ;-)

Cincinnati, Xavier reveal suspensions

Updated: December 11, 2011, 10:07 PM ET

By Andy Katz, ESPN.com

Cincinnati and Xavier each suspended four players Sunday for their roles in a brawl that ended the Bearcats' blowout loss to No. 8 Xavier a day earlier.

Cincinnati suspended senior Yancy Gates, junior Cheikh Mbodj and freshman Octavius Ellis six games each and freshman Ge'Lawn Guyn for one game.

Xavier suspended freshman Dez Wells and walk-on Landen Amos for four games, junior guard Mark Lyons for two and senior guard Tu Holloway for one game.

Holloway for one game? Seems like somebody has more interest in keeping a #8 ranking than handing down proper punishment.

Nicely done. SU's zone defense always has trouble when the other team gets hot on 3's. If theynplaynlike that tonight, there's no way they lose. I'll be rooting for them

Cincinnati gets the #6 seed in the East Region.

They will face #11 Texas in Nashville on Friday.

Cincinnati gets by Texas to advance to the third round.  Despite losing a 19-point second half lead, UC rallies late to hold off UT 65-59.

The 14th ranked Bonnies couldn't hold off #3 FSU so its UC vs The Seminoles on Sunday. Go 'Cats!

Way too close at the end, but still a good showing against UT, which I thought could be a bit of a trap game.  I really haven't watched FSU this season, and all I know about them is that they've beaten both Duke and UNC this season.  How does UC stack up?  If we do manage to win, we would most likely be facing OSU in the Sweet 16, yes? Very interesting...

Cincinnati holds off #3 FSU 62-56 to advance into the Sweet 16.

UC will now face #2 OSU in Boston.

bUCkeye state, bitches!

Cinsanity!!!

Very Proud of the bearcats....representing the State of Ohio....But The Ohio State Buckeyes will put UC in their place....with a lost....GO BUCKS

You are probably right, but that is also what I would have said about Syracuse.

We beat more top 25 teams than any team in the country.

I just recently learned that there is a college basketball team in Columbus.

And I just learned that there's only one college basketball team in Cincinnati...and it's Catholic.  It's a shame Ohio State has to beat Our Lady of the Bearcubs before we advance.  We'd might as well have played Shawnee State.
