I heard on the radio on my way to work that Kendle International will be putting their name on the top of carew tower. Doesn't carew have a historical designation that would now allow that kind of stuff?

Almost All of our major buildings have names on them, i don't think that i mind it, just a little odd looking.

I guess we can't expect them to use an art deco font. :-(

That's appalling - what is it with insecure and self-important marketing people in medium-sized companies and their incessant need to deface landmark towers? I can understand adding signage to a bland shoebox tower, but let's see - Bank of America doesn't have their logo on their HQ's crown in Charlotte, P&G doesn't have a logo plastered between the "twins"... so why do these dipsh!ts think this is ever a good idea?

If you're worried that your company doesn't have brand recognition, how about improving your brand and product before you justify your employment by plastering your ego logo on a beautiful building? Idiots.

Joe Wessels has this in this weeks CityBeat.

I know there's going to be at least some push back from Council on this.

Wow...this is intersting.  Interestingly crazy.

I 100% hate it!

It was either this or they leave downtown for the burbs.........got to pick your evil sometimes.

Bank of America and P&G do not need to put their name on their buildings because you already know the building is theirs and they occupy it.  Nobody has any clue as to who occupies the Carew Tower except for those that work there.

"Bank of America and P&G do not need to put their name on their buildings because you already know the building is theirs and they occupy it"

I do. You obviously do. However, outside of Cincinnati (or Charlotte in BofA's case), I can assure you the average person would not recognize those buildings, much less what company that's headquartered there. Show someone from outside the region a picture of P&G and tell me how quickly they respond with "don't be silly, that's the P&G headquarters". Even so... you don't see the marketing people at either being so insecure that they resort to such a gauche measure.

"It was either this or they leave downtown for the burbs.........got to pick your evil sometimes."

If being able to deface the tallest historic landmark in Cincy was their compelling reason to stay downtown, they have seriously warped priorities. Like I said - I've regrettably had to deal with the self-important and vapid people who - rather than just ask their boss to "drop trou" and pucker up, find it easier to kiss @ss by proposing a needless company logo slapped atop a landmark office tower. I'd be fine if they kept their idiocy to themselves and confined to their conference rooms but now they'll be inflicting it on everyone.

It was either this or they leave downtown for the burbs.........got to pick your evil sometimes.

Is this really true...I haven't been able to read the CityBeat thing yet.  If so, then that is really pathetic...and to be honest, I don't think the DRB will allow it.

Actually there is a precedent for this, from the 1960s, in Chicago.

Back then Hugh Hefner had bought the old Palmolive Building (which still had that beacon on top), and renamed it the Playboy Building. He put a big illuminated Playboy sign on the top.

At that time the "Playboy Building" was the tallest thing on Michigan Avenue before they built John Hancock.

MayDay, are those images you posted legit renderings or are they just something you photoshopped?

DOWNTOWN - Think the "Princess Diana tiara" that will adorn the planned Great American Insurance Building at Queen City Square looks tacky?

Try a big K-E-N-D-L-E lighting up the nighttime sky. From where else? Atop the beloved Carew Tower.

Ahh Hugh Hefner... what a classy and inspiring precedent to follow  Thanks for the history lesson but I'm well aware this isn't the first.

Rando, that's a Photoshop job, just like this:

Well, look at Central Trust/PNC for inspiration...

DOWNTOWN - Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dohoney is asking city council to invest up to $200,000 to keep Kendle International Inc. in downtown's Carew Tower for the next decade.

If council approves the reinvestment agreement Dohoney recommends, Kendle will invest $4.4 million in the Carew Tower for a new server room and to upgrade and renovate 130,000 square feet of office space.

...

Jeez ... if they install this sign, we as a city will regret it for years to come.. Very bad idea.

Does anyone know when the Union Central got it's sign?

I found a promotional album cover that has to be 1950s or early 1960s with a sign on the top, but I haven't had much luck pinning down anything conclusive.

I think 1959 is the earliest date I've seen with signage on the Union Central building. That is, if Jayson has the date right on this photo.

Does anyone have a photo of those god-awful communication dishes that used to be up there?  Those things were hideous and really took away from the look of the building.

The only way Kendle's name doesn't completely ruin the vibe of the building is if they put it vertically at one of the corners. Maybe they could do it as a bat symbol kind of things where they project the name on the building at night instead of actually hanging letters.

This is the only font I wouldn't mind ... and it would have to be nickel or brushed silver. It would also have to be lit by a lamp pointing in the sign's direction.

This is utterly sacriligious! I would rather have a vacant Carew tower than have KENDLE written all over the top of it!

Now that is a bold statement.

It really is a little self-righteous from them to do this. How many Cinci buildings actually have their name up top? Kroger, PNC, National City and 5/3? What others are there?

Macy's, Great American, Convergys...

and soon to be American Financial Group! ;-)

That is the same thing as Great American.

....Harland, URS, US Bank, the Enquirer.

Yea, I started thinking about that after I posted it and it is "Great American Insurance" on QCSII. I need to get out for a bit. LOL

I'm assuming they are moving everyone out of their current building?

Buildings with names that haven't been mentioned...

Hyatt, Paycor, Millennium (2 buildings), Neace Luken, Ramada, ADP, First Watch, Western Southern Life HQ, & garage where QCS is planned. One Lytle Place, American Financial Has their name on 4 buildings, 580 Building, 525 Vine, & another one on 3rd street, & GABP. Kentucky has 3, Omni Care & 2 Hotels.

I don't think the Kroger building has it's name up top, does it?

Yes it does.  You can't miss it!  All Kroger stores have their name on their building...  ;)

Meh, who cares.  Carew...I mean Kendle Tower is so 20th century it's got the city stuck in the past.  I hope they spruce it up with some COOL sign like this:

KendleTower.jpg

Now that's the epitome of cool.

^---

I guess I will wait until I see what exactly they have planned...I could see it looking hideous or just OK but not good.  It will depend on size and type.

^ Hey, we could use those six colors for the painting of the bridges in another thread!   Everything could match. :bang:

I suppose it's like someone proposing such a thing on Terminal Tower, which would cause the modell to hit the fan around here....where most people I've talked to plan to continue calling Jacobs Field exactly that.

Has Jacobs Field changed names or something?

Soon to be Progressive Field.

It sounds like PBS Stadium days are numbered too.

How about Paul Brown Stadium at Macy's Field?

^YIKES!

Well, when Riverfront was named to Cinergy Field, I continued to call it Riverfront along with most people I knew. Some names are just dumb. :-D

we really lucked out with Great American Ballpark.  That sounds like it might actually have been named that.

No, he means that it doesn't sounded branded.

Yes, I agree Great American  Ballpark actually sounds pretty good. Kinda gives a hint of American pastime to it. Too bad it is still a branded name, albeit a good one.

Branding isn't all bad, just look at Wrigley Field
