Not a bad-looking downtown. The park makes a nice centerpiece.

 

A pox on window air conditioners, though. Some of those handsome buildings would benefit by having central air, and getting rid of the tumors growing from their window openings.

Ditto on the window A/C - it's amazing that any corporation would lease a building without central air.

I cannot say I've actually know of any office building today that doesn't have central air. that's pretty funny! Other than that, some great pics! Nice looking town.

do they still have the scary basketball court off the back of the courhouse? Or was that "lost" to the courthouse expansion?

Yes, they still have the basketball court. That's behind the court house and the expansion (the new jail) is across the street connected by a pedestrian bridge.

A neat and sizable town. I think there's probably still some run-down sections, but it seems to be improving.

It was demolished in the 70's because it was, according to my CAD teacher, losing money "hand over fist". The man who owned it at the time was partnered with Don Nash and they decided to demolish the building due to its poor condition, financial instability, and because there was no longer a market for a downtown hotel. Interestingly enough, after selling the property to Richland Bank, they built the Holiday Inn right down the street. Many believe that the Leland didn't need to be demolished. The structure had to be in relatively good condition since it took them about 5-10 times before the building started to come down. The Leland is missed so much that for our bicentennial celebration, they are having "Dinner at the Leland", which means a banquet in the parking lot.

I really dislike this city for demolishing the courthouse. Its replacement is terrible.

If you are ever in Mansfield and want to learn more about the city, visit The Mansfield Memorial Museum. It is free and really interesting.

I don't usually comment on the picture sets, but this was a great one.  Makes me want to stop in Mansfield some time.

 

I'd also like to defend your "lovely Court House".  With the exception of the path leading from the sidewalk to the front entrance (particularly that ramp), I think it is a pretty tasteful attempt at using classical motifs in a modern setting.  It's modest and it looks like a Court House, so at least it does it's job.
