Posted January 13, 200817 yr Here are some pictures that I have taken over the past year in Mansfield's Central Park District. Our Lovely Court House. And the addition to the court house. An existing business is expanding and moving into the old Basil Room (Former Reed's Department Store) Getting Ready for their Open House Athens is the best. If you are ever in Mansfield, you need to go here. The former home of the Leland Hotel. Yay for parking! But Don Nash needed a reason to build the Holiday Inn and Richland Bank needed more parking for this monstrosity. Over looking Downtown, the Flats, and all the way out to the Industrial Park. A picture of my favorite building from the roof of the Barington One Building.
January 13, 200817 yr Not a bad-looking downtown. The park makes a nice centerpiece. A pox on window air conditioners, though. Some of those handsome buildings would benefit by having central air, and getting rid of the tumors growing from their window openings.
January 13, 200817 yr Ditto on the window A/C - it's amazing that any corporation would lease a building without central air.
January 13, 200817 yr I cannot say I've actually know of any office building today that doesn't have central air. that's pretty funny! Other than that, some great pics! Nice looking town.
January 13, 200817 yr Thanks. Do all of the photos show up for all of you? The photos stop at the library for me.
January 13, 200817 yr do they still have the scary basketball court off the back of the courhouse? Or was that "lost" to the courthouse expansion?
January 13, 200817 yr Yes, they still have the basketball court. That's behind the court house and the expansion (the new jail) is across the street connected by a pedestrian bridge.
January 13, 200817 yr A neat and sizable town. I think there's probably still some run-down sections, but it seems to be improving.
January 14, 200817 yr Awesome! Keep 'em comming! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 14, 200817 yr This is (was) the Leland Hotel... For any Mansfield building junkies, here is an old but interesting website to check out... http://mansfield.w8jaz.com/index.html
January 14, 200817 yr It was demolished in the 70's because it was, according to my CAD teacher, losing money "hand over fist". The man who owned it at the time was partnered with Don Nash and they decided to demolish the building due to its poor condition, financial instability, and because there was no longer a market for a downtown hotel. Interestingly enough, after selling the property to Richland Bank, they built the Holiday Inn right down the street. Many believe that the Leland didn't need to be demolished. The structure had to be in relatively good condition since it took them about 5-10 times before the building started to come down. The Leland is missed so much that for our bicentennial celebration, they are having "Dinner at the Leland", which means a banquet in the parking lot.
January 14, 200817 yr I really dislike this city for demolishing the courthouse. Its replacement is terrible.
January 26, 200817 yr If you are ever in Mansfield and want to learn more about the city, visit The Mansfield Memorial Museum. It is free and really interesting.
January 26, 200817 yr I don't usually comment on the picture sets, but this was a great one. Makes me want to stop in Mansfield some time. I'd also like to defend your "lovely Court House". With the exception of the path leading from the sidewalk to the front entrance (particularly that ramp), I think it is a pretty tasteful attempt at using classical motifs in a modern setting. It's modest and it looks like a Court House, so at least it does it's job.
