We created an UrbanOhio Flickr group that can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/urbanohio/

If you are a Flickr member you can join the group, if you are not a Flickr member you can register here: http://www.flickr.com or you can use an existing Yahoo account to login.  Once you are a member of Flickr, you can join the UrbanOhio group here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/urbanohio.

We would like you to post two of you best photos of Ohio Daily into the group and map your photos with a geotag.  This will give all the users of Ohio a way to see exactly where the photo was taken.  This video will give you an explanation of geotagging photos with Flickr Maps: http://www.flickr.com/help/screencasts/vol2

I know Hayward has one.

there is no denying that Flickr is now the largest photo sharing website in the world.

I though that was urbanohio.com.

I wish.

...I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or a bitchslap...

Actually, I'm curious of the benefits of flickr over Pbase.  Feel free to weigh in.

Here is my initial take:

Flickr is more of a social networking site that hosts photos.  It is not ideal for presentation IMO and for the $24.95 subscription price, you get unlimited storage.  Flickr has the largest community of photographers and has more options to integrate photos in blogs and websites as well as the ability to create groups where people share photos in relation to that group.  Flickr is owned by Yahoo and has been known to censor and remove photos at their discretion.  Overall Flickr's site isn't very customizable.

Pbase on the other hand is very customizable if you are familiar with CSS or if you have a template.  They offer you unlimited bandwidth and 500MB of storage for $23 a month and they do not put ads in your photo galleries.  Pbase caters to more professional photographers but there are plenty of amateurs on there as well.  They do not censor photos.

I've been using Flickr way before Yahoo bought them. I love it.

As far as customization: Firefox has tons of extension that can be utilized on Flickr. Additionally, if you are a Greasemonkey user, there are tons more.

A few days ago I tried out the new photo editing option now built into Flickr. I used it to edit my avatar and I was happy with it.

I used Yahoo Photos before they purchased Flickr, then was thrust into Flickr when Yahoo consolidated into one photo sharing site. That said, as cincyimages said, Flickr is designed as much for social networking and public sharing of photos, as anything. For me, I'm just looking for a medium to send photos of the kids to family, so I use none of the features. I only stay with Flickr because it interfaces with my Yahoo email. I can take it or leave it.

Yup...I use Pbase for this very reason.  It is much more professional and has better functionality and design.  Although I do use Photobucket for all my general photo hosting needs (i.e. UrbanOhio, UrbanCincy).  This is simply because I didn't want to buy enough space on Pbase for all of my photos so I only upload my very best photos there, and simply upload everything to Photobucket.

sweet i just got an account... i use photobucket and have their pay account but i like this..

my sn is DJ Orion 87  lol original ain't it  :-P

OK we know have seven members in the UrbanOhio Flickr group.  I know UrbanOhio can do much better than that.  If you already have a Yahoo account, you don't have to register again.  You can simple use your Yahoo account to login in.  Under the Flickr profile, you can pick a username that is separate from Yahoo account if you would like.  Let's get a nice group of UrbanOhio photographers out there to map Ohio with Photos.

Flickr has a feature called Maps were Flickr lets you Geo Tag your photos to a place in Ohio.  You can see an example of this feature here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cincinnati/map/

So join the UrbanOhio Flickr group (It is free) so we can map Ohio.  Post your two best photos (daily) of a place in Ohio and GeoTag them for the UrbanOhio map.

(Note: You retain copyright on all your photos that are submitted to the UrbanOhio Flickr Group.)

I joined, but boy do those satellite images pale in comparison to Google maps. If only it were as easy to post pics on their maps.

I just joined. I'm not used to geotagging my pictures, but I think it makes sense for this group.

To improve your UrbanOhio Flickr Group browsing, download the Piclens plugin for Safari or Firefox 3.0 from http://piclens.com.

To test it out, click on the the link below and when you mouse over an image, an arrow appears.  Click on the arrow and the screen will change to the screenshots below so you can browse the whole gallery through the Piclens plugin.  It is one of the best photo browsing experiences I have ever seen.

I've thought about Flickr as an adjunct to what I'm doing now; the plugins give some nice functionality that, if I were to try to do them from scratch, would require more knowlege of HTML and other web programming tools than I have.

Right now I'm paying $11.95/month each for two Yahoo Small Business sites with unlimited storage and unlimited transfer. I like being able to do whatever suits me so far with relatively simple HTML. I grew up writing code, mostly Fortran 77, Cobol, PL/I, even some RPGII (talk about irrelevant now) back in the days of keypunches, and a little maintenance work on pre-existing un-commented,  undocumented, unstructured Basic junk that consisted mostly of tracing it to see what it did, and then throwing it out and rewriting the whole thing correctly in something better-supported (I know I'm dating myself, but no one else will, so ... ), so I'm pretty comfortable with a limited amount of HTML and when I want to try something different, I just dig into one of the manuals.

I've been selling a fair amount of my stuff, mostly 11x14 prints, at local outdoor art fests, and eventually want to add Pay Pal and a shopping cart to my sites. I could probably be making some money now if I weren't staying up nights cluttering the UO forums with old-fart reminiscences.

I just joined the group and submitted my two photos.  :)

that arcade photo is sweet

I have a flickr account and I am part of the group, but I don't have any photos of ohio to submit.  I am building a library of photos though.

Here's the link  to my photo stream if you want to check it out.

Hey people! Add some photos to the UrbanOhio Flickr group, I think the most recent 20 or so are mine.

  • 1 year later...

I just joined the group. I'm at http://www.flickr.com/photos/eridony but I'm behind on uploading. Most my shots I've been posting have been from last year.

Sometimes I find some pretty interesting stuff in my Flickr stats. You can find what people were searching for to find your photos. Someone ended up on my photos after performing this very long search with a lot of exclusions:

It's too bad that Flickr's popularity has been on the decline. I still find it the best place to share photography. With Instagram slowly turning into Snapchat and the emphasis being shifted away from photography, I think Flickr is just about the only mainstream photography hosting site left. Anyway, if you're on Flickr, you should add your Ohio photos to the UrbanOhio group!

I had been using Flickr exclusively for saving and sharing photos until about a year ago. I switched over to Google Photos, only because their mobile app works much better for backing up my photos from my phone, and their desktop app seems to work more quickly and doesn't slow my computer to a crawl when it's archiving. Also they have a good scan app for my hard copy photos. Flickr just hasn't updated their tech in a way that makes it easy to use.

Since SmugMug bought Flickr last year, they have been making improvements to site after years of neglect by Yahoo. They recently rolled out higher resolution photo pages, and if you have a big monitor, you can now see tons of detail in panoramas. If you are a photographer who mostly shares your work on Instagram, please consider using Flickr and contributing to the UrbanOhio group!

If I join, will be the only one in the group?

No

I typically add a few photos to the group per week. You can view the photo pool here. Could use more members from other parts of the state besides Cincinnati!

Very well. I need to figure out how make this $50 investment (yearly fee to Flickr) work for me.
