German Village, the largest, privately restored neighborhood in the country, blah, blah, blah, lost a 1/3 of it to a highway, did you know that? Enough rambling, on with the tour!

I bet you did.  You live in the (former) German Village outer-edge ;).

Of course, or I wouldn't be worthy of my screen name. At least we still have the Market Exchange District.

Excellent photos. Probably my favorite historic district in the midwest.

Those Germans sure do know how to build neighborhoods.

A wonderful neighborhood.

Absolutely awesome.

I love the way restaurants and shops are sprinkled through the neighborhood

^I think that's also one of my favorite parts of the neighborhood.

When I see pictures of German Village I always get a pang of homesickness.  We lived in the Village for a couple of years when I was in grade school.  High Street was still completely full of buildings, without the huge gaps you see now--many grand old homes were destroyed for nothing better than a parking lot.  My parents used to go to Planks when the relatives came to town, for a night of beer drinking and German singalongs.

There was a weekly German language radio program, sponsored by Juergen's Konditorei.  The woman was unable to say "South Third Street in German Village".  It came out as Zouse Surd Street in Cherman Fillutch.  My sister and I thought that was the best, and over the years we began calling it Cherman Fillutch, finally setting on Charming Fillage.  My parents got tired of the old house, drafty as it was, and we moved out to the burbs, complete with no public transportation and miles from anything.

It is always my first destination when I return home.  Our old house is now a law office, but some of the shops are still there, so of course I have to stop in.  Of all the places I have lived, I think that it was the most "urban".  And definitely the best pastries!

Thanks for the trip down memory road!  Excellent photos, really capturing the neighborhood. Almost makes me want to move back to Columbus....almost.

I agree. No perfectly organized master plan. They just built as they went along. I love the sense of complexity and randomness that comes with that.

^^When you come back to visit make sure you hit Pistacia Vera on 3rd, best desserts in the city hands down. I forgot to get a pic.

Dude if I'm getting dessert in German Village it will be the giant cream puffs at Schmidts. I used to keep them in my fridge and snack on those things.

I'll have to try that place out some time though. Thanks for the recommendation.

This also debunks the idea that businesses can only thrive if they have access to convenient parking.

Beautiful neighborhood. Great job taking pictures of it, I know this thread is old but wanted to tell you that. I love all the brick streets. Adds so much character to the neighborhood. I see some streets have been replaced with cement though. Hopefully the remaining brick streets stay intact. The cement makes the neighborhood, well, less beautiful. It just doesn't fit the neighborhood.
