I avoid it at all costs. It’s not a pleasant experience either walking or driving.

And it is odd they’re building out such a large space. I also think it’s strange they put a new location on ORR with the location of other nearby Starbucks. It’s not like urban locations where walking distance matters. I’m not sure what the strategy is anymore lol

It would be hilarious if Starbucks just moved into the old building instead.

Yeah that area isn't very fun to visit. I only head that way to visit Target or if I'm going into the actual nice area of Westerville just up the road. As long as they keep all these vehicle traffic heavy businesses clustered together in the existing strip mall/chain areas then I say go for it. They keep building them because they make money, but I hate seeing these places open up in actual pedestrian friendly areas.

It also appears they are moving into the old Trism location on campus

That's going to be a starbucks?! I saw the work in there going on but never expected that.  That's such a massive space. That's almost Reserve territory.

It makes sense to have that massive study space on campus. Honestly good to see a likely stable tenant take up such a large space instead of the unstable rotation. I mean, I'd prefer a massive Roosevelt there but otherwise, Starbucks isn't terrible for that space.

The permits say it’s Starbucks, they are probably going to close their location next to the new Walgreens, I would think.

I guess they could always do a roastery style place, like in Chicago.

Highly doubt we are getting a Starbucks Roastery but fingers crossed. The only place in Columbus I could see that going is Easton but even still they are super selective on the cities they put them in.

I’m sure it won’t be, just crazy how large of space it is.

Definitely not a roasters. The smallest roasters is 15k SF in Seattle. This space is about 6k. Which is 3+ times the average store size of 1500-2000 SF.  They have these in between spaces that are specialty reserves with very unique local designs and aestetics. I would be highly disappointed if it's just a scaled up standard Starbucks and not something stand out.

This will complement the Starbucks right next door in both Target and Kroger.

I wonder if those will close. Are they run by the stores, or Starbucks? I’m pretty sure if you work at a Starbucks in a Kroger, you’re a Kroger employee and not a Starbucks employee. Which leads me to think the decision to close would be on the Kroger/Target store, not on Starbucks.

Just a little speculation here: I live right near this and drive past it almost everyday. I've recently noticed the amount of cars for sale on the lot to really be dwindling down to a point where half the lot is empty (as seen about two hours ago). I've never seen it anything but completely full since I've lived here. I wonder if things are moving behind the scenes and the car lot will be shutting down at this location sooner rather than later.

I've got some more speculative updates about this one!

Was walking by today and decided to count how many cars are left in the lot. There are only 15 right now and they even had both entrances to the parking lot blocked off with a couple of those 15 cars. By far the fewest cars I have seen on this lot in the past couple years. The business was also closed but their online hours say they are open. Probably isn't happening super soon, but might start to see some action here shortly!

EDIT: This is the Super Deal used car lot at 3021 N. High, the corner of High and Weber. Forgot that it only quotes one thing!

Drove by the new Dunkin that is replacing the bank and noticed they cut down these trees. Seems like a super unnecessary thing and makes clintonville even less enjoyable to walk.

unless these are the pear trees that Ohio banned.

Dammit - this pisses me off. The retailer wants clear visibility of their signage. The trees were Zelkovas - not native but not invasive. The City owns these trees - were they cut down illegally? The original site compliance plan shows the trees remaining in place.

No idea, and I don’t think I was imagining things when I drove by. I’m pretty sure they cut them, because I was confused why it looked different.

Yes they cut them down. Now we get a full UNOBSTRUCTED view of this beautiful orange and brown monstrosity of a building. I also have a feeling this drive-thru exiting directly onto the sidewalk is gonna cause problems.

They painted the building Dunkin colors so it’s not brown anymore. I still wonder if they had the okay to cut those down.

I sent the commission an email asking if this was part of the approved plan, so we will see if I get anything back.

got a response, they said this didn’t fall under the CAC since it didn’t require variances. They said they reached out to the city planner assigned to it and will ask about landscaping notations.

Zelkovas are great tough street trees that can live quite long and can get decently large and are generally unproblematic. Smh that they cut them down.

Just saw a post on Reddit that the Urban Forestry Department is requiring the owners to replace the trees they cut down without permission.

It is a positive, but hope that they are forced to plant trees of similar size and they should have to pay a fine.

That building looks hideous now. I hadn’t been in that neck of the woods in a while but man all that orange is horrid.

Yeah, it is terrible, I’m hoping it closes within a year.

I'm am absolutely ecstatic about the outpouring of hate this specific Dunkin Donuts is getting. Literally nobody likes or wants it!

Make me think of that At Dollar and Beyond store further up the street near the post office, or the My Pillow store that was in the area for a brief period of time. Like do people even do their research before opening businesses? Why would a dollar store do well in this neighborhood? Why would an alt-right pillow store do well here? Why would a crappy coffee drive thru open in a neighborhood that has 4 of those plus multiple local coffee options do well here? I just don't understand!

No height along high street allowed, but give us giant signage for big business and hideous paint jobs all day!

Sadly, it will probably be busy, because it has a drive thru.

Maybe it will be the final nail in the coffin for Tim Hortons at Arcadia.

I hope not, despite that location probably being the worst one in the city. Honorable mention for the one on Riverside & Grandview.

I was surprised they went to the effort to tear down the Riverside one and put a little one up.

Probably the wrong thread for this but ever since Burger King bought them Tim Horton's has gone way downhill in general

We are going down a rabbit hole but I will defend their old hashbrowns that had onions and herbs. They were the best thing about it.

But more on topic, if the CV Timmy's goes, it opens up space for another hookah bar solidifying that area's importance for Mediterranean/Middle East/African cultural hub.

Ideally though, I'd like the city to reclaim it and just expand portal park so it actually opens to Glen Echo. I know we will never realize a daylighted ravine but I think an expanded Portal Park would be a great addition to a spot that is bursting with potential I the coming decade.

New Columbus Dunkin’ Donuts hit with $8,000 fine over trees

“The city of Columbus will fine the owner of an under-construction Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins more than $8,000 after mature trees just off of North High Street were cut down.

The trees were removed sometime this winter, according to Kerry Francis, a communications officer for the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. Since then, the owner has been assessed an $8,800 fine and will also have to plant four trees in place of the ones cut down.“

Sadly that isn’t enough, they probably knew it would be a tiny amount and said screw it, cut them down. It also didn’t say I’d they had to plant bigger mature trees, or if it just needs replaced with a sapling.

Sapling are generally only a couple hundred bucks and stand maybe 3-4ft tall or so. This is enough money to get some more mature trees, but the pricing gets fairly steep fairly quickly the large the trees get since it's tough to safely transport a mature tree. You can even get some 7ft tall trees for like $200 + shipping.

For sure, saplings are cheap and easy to care for. I’m saying they should be forced to plant bigger more mature trees, closer to what was cut down, no matter the cost of it. That way they not only have to pay a fine, but them cutting down the trees accomplished nothing.

No that's what I was saying, bigger trees aren't that expensive $8000 will def cover it. You can buy 5-7ft trees for like $250. You aren't going to get 20ft mature trees though, those are super difficult to transport since the root system is so developed and that's where things get crazy expensive. The trees they cut down only seemed to be in the 10-12ft range though.

The trees that were cut down were Zelkovas and were 20-25' tall.

Street trees along commercial corridors should be 2-1/2" to 3" caliper - not saplings. Saplings will be damaged by vandals, cars running them over trying to park, and snow pushed by snow plows. 3" is ideal in my opinion. These trees vary in height from 12' to 18' depending on species. The installed cost is somewhere between $750 to $1,000 per tree. The problem is the space between the curb and the sidewalk. A 3" caliper tree has a minimum root ball diameter of 32". There needs to be enough space for the root ball.

This is from my experience of being in the biz...

Speaking of trees....where's the best place to get trees in Columbus? I'm wanting a Silver Maple for my backyard and want to get it planted fairly soon to get it well established before the summer hits.

I dunno if they have silver maples, but I was really happy with Kurtz Bros on Westerville Rd when I went last year.

I think Oakland Nursery has good quality plant materials.

Why a Silver Maple? They're messy, weak wooded trees. They do grow fast. You might consider a Tulip Poplar. This native tree grows fast and will eventually have nice flowers. Good fall color too.

I've purchased trees as gifts from a place out in Licking County. A good arborist isn't going to come in and plant a tree when you want though, they're only going to be doing it during the correct time of year to plant that tree. Got my parents a Japanese Maple which I paid for in March but they wouldn't come out and plant until June or something.

It looks like the North side of The Deco has finally been rented. Does anyone have the inside on it? It was advertised for medical, but hopefully some more retail options are coming.

I hope you really do not want one. They start out great but are relatively shortlived, the roots are shallow and invasive, and the tree is notorious for splitting in wind storms. They are highly discouraged and I believe many communities have banned them, and I think Cbus might be one of them.

*not seeing that they are banned in Cbus but are discouraged. If you plant you need an area that is far from anything that it could fall on. I had one of my neighbors silver maples fall a few years ago-fortunately it was from a strong warm south wind and it fell directly to the north-the only direction it could fall without harming anything. This tree looked healthy and we thought that nothing was wrong with it, but it uprooted whole and came down revealing a damaged partly rotted root system.

There are other good maples to plant plus

Oaks

Zelkova Serrata

Katsura Tree

Dawn Redwood(needle leave but drops needles-do not need to rake.

The list goes on and on.

Totally understand the risk. It would be planted in an open area on my property away from any structures that could be damaged. I want something that will provide a decent amount of shade fairly quickly, and I'm honestly not too worried about 10+ years down the road because I will most likely be moving before that point. I appreciate the recommendations though!

If it is isolated then go for it. They do grow fast and are pretty with the silvery leaves fluttering.  None of the problems would apply in your situation. Good luck with it I hope it grows like a damn weed. Also maybe a Poplar would be nice-they grow faster and pretty also.
