Posted January 21, 200817 yr There are a couple of commercial corridors on Inndianola along with sporadic shops between Hudson (south) and Midgard (north) where you can find coffee, learn Irish dance moves, check out an art gallery or two and watch a good flick at Studio 35 (they also serve beer and food). It's nothing you'd ever describe as "beautiful" or "stunning", but it does have its own quirky charm. On a personal note, I had written off Clintonville as a place that just doesn't do it for me except for the southern portion (The Dube, Shi-Sha, & Hounddog's), mainly because High St is 35MPH, has stretches of suburbia breaking up the urban strips making it not so walkable/ a pain to bike, and doesn't offer very interesting residential areas. Add to that more effort to reach than any other urban nabe since I live Downtown. However, after getting better acquainted with the area for the sake of offering complete documentation of our neighborhoods, it is growing on me, (High St, still not so much). I was planning on getting some Glen Echo and Walhalla in this thread, but it's just freezing, so you're going to have to be satisfied with separate threads. It's a holiday and it's very cold, so not many people were out. January 21, 200817 yr Very good. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 21, 200817 yr Hmmm...not sure about this one. I'm glad that your posting lots of Cbus pics though, thx.
January 22, 200817 yr Good old Studio 35. I saw quite a few movies while getting drunk there, but I thought this had closed. Glad to see it open for drinking, I mean movies.
January 22, 200817 yr Definately different. Still, its kinda neat to see a older neighborhood commercial area that's unrenovated yet occupied.
January 22, 200817 yr I love the Dube and Dick's Den (I'm at each about once a week), but they are not in Clintonville. They would be considered North Campus, or Old North Columbus. The Dube is a good half mile south of Clintonville. Still, I agree with your complaint about too much suburbanization along High Street (though I still have no trouble biking it). The city's Urban Commercial Overlay has urbanized a lot of those suburban setbacks, but the vast majority are one-story commercial sites. The city's Planning Division had a kickoff last week for an updated Clintonville Plan (about 200 people attended, a Division record) and many of us pushed for taller, mixed-use buildings along the High and Indianola corridors. Architecturally, the Indianola stretch you highlighted sucks, and it needs more interesting shops, but Studio 35 is one of a few gems there. It is the last independent, single-screen neighborhood theater in Columbus, and certainly among the last in Ohio.
January 23, 200817 yr Oops, you're right. According to this map it's in the University District which ends north of Arcadia. Great, you took away some of what I thought I liked about Clintonville. Though I did have a good lunch at Whole World, a vegetarian restaurant/bakery on High. It's in one interesting urban strip on High, but not ped/bike friendly for being such a self-proclaimed progressive neighborhood. There's two lanes for parking, no median, and four lanes for traffic: a total of seven lanes, just way too wide.
January 23, 200817 yr High Street medians is another recommendation I made at the Clintonville planning meeting last week. Too wide.
February 5, 200817 yr I used to work at a drain and gutter place on Indianola in the late 90's that doubled as a wind-surfing shop. There was a great greasy spoon breakfast place next door. Either of those places still there?
February 8, 200817 yr The greasy spoon was Rube's, now closed (there were some health violations somewhere along the line). But I recently heard a rumor that a new diner may soon open in the same location.
February 8, 200817 yr Good old Studio 35. I saw quite a few movies while getting drunk there, but I thought this had closed. Glad to see it open for drinking, I mean movies. I too had thought Studio 35 had closed. I remember breaking a filling there while eating popcorn during a Marx Brothers film (and no, it was not a first run!...even though it was a million years back, and admission was something like $2.00) http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
