January 23, 200817 yr How fast does the South Shore Line go? Operating speeds over most of the line are around 70-75mph in open country, slower when running at grade level in populated areas. The cars are capable of quite a lot more, and I wish they'd secure the right-of-way so they could make use of that. Late one night I was riding back to Michigan City from Chicago, hanging out at the front of the lead car where I could see the track ahead and see into the operator's cab. The crews change at Michigan City, and these guys could go home as soon as they got there. There are several miles of straight track with no stops and few crossings between Dune Park and Michigan City, and the speed indicator was hovering around 90mph for most of that distance. You could tell we were going fast, but the ride was steady and stable at that speed. that train looks like a luxurious ride Strictly commuter stuff. The longest ride is about 2:20 from South Bend to Millennium Park Station in Chicago, and the ride from Michigan City is about 1:45. There's no lounge or food service, and the cars have vinyl-upholstered seats and a rubber runner down the aisle. The outsides may get grungy in the winter, but the interiors are kept clean and the heat/air conditioning works well. Most cars have restrooms. Here's an interior shot looking back from just ahead of the center doors:
