Does anyone know how their downtown outpost has been going? I know it was announced soon before the pandemic started. Wondering if it's still even in existence.

Moving to Atlanta?

This seems like a cryptic comment....Is something brewing that most of us are completely unaware?!?!

I'm pretty sure he's just making a joke, reminiscent of the SHW HQ site location non-drama.

Hi KJP......I was actually referring to your comment. Do have some inside information about Progressive that you were hinting? Sorry about the confusion....your posts are always must reads for me!! Your above comment seemed to have a hint of mystery.

That is NOT funny!

Oh, no I wasn't dropping a hint there. It was, in fact, a joke.

It looks like 3,000 will be remote.  Is that 1:1 the same as work from home?

SMH. 3,000 could put another 500-footer in downtown Cleveland.

Well, it is 3,000 out of 6,400, so that's still plenty for a 500 footer!

Looking at the list of positions, seems more like 500 that would be at or near HQ (legal, tech, data, HR), but maybe I'm wrong about the adjusters. And 500 is still not bad!

Employee here, it's still there chugging along. I assume they're working remote atm. I'm not aware of any plans for any sort of substantial expansion there though.

BLS data shows the Cleveland labor force at its highest post-pandemic number. There was an increase in unemployment, which I have to think comes more from people reentering the labor force than anything else.

I posted multiple tweets/quotes to that, including "Only Cleveland can afford to live rent-free in NYC's head" and "And yet it took $341 million for New York to convince a Clevelander to live and work there."

If you saw my responses you likely didn't approve.  :)

That ship sailed years ago.  The city assumed Progressive needed them more than vice versa, and botched it.    Not too long ago, we were discussing this on Twitter and Michael DeAloia, who would know, confirmed what I had heard from insiders:  that the main stumbling point was integral parking in the building.

Cleveland outpaced Pittsburgh by almost 10k in “Eds/meds” and “Professional/Business” from 2011-2019. This data includes the job crushing recessions of 2000 and 2008. Job growth here last ten years was superior, albeit marginally.

A headline like that wouldn’t get cle.com their click quota.

The sad thing is they have done this cleveland Pittsburgh comparison many times before so it is nothing new.

The title was definitely meant to draw clicks. They could have literally chosen pretty much every other large Midwest metro and we still would have lagged in overall numbers.

What they wouldn’t get into detail about is that in the last ten years Cleveland went through what other Midwest metros had already gone through. It wasn’t until after the 2006-2008 recession that Ed’s and meds finally overtook manufacturing as the largest economic sector locally. Let that sink in.

The region is on track for growth in the coming decade. 2010-2020 was the last decade of Cleveland’s decline and stagnation

I thought the cle.com article was a fair and balanced reporting of a thoughtful, well researched report by the Cleveland State faculty member, Richey Piiparinen.

This is exactly the type of reporting that the UO community strives to discover with its both positive and negative news presented therein.  Economic statistics are certainly a tricky business, but the overall GDP growth numbers presented for both cities seem pretty sound.

Maybe we are a bit overly critical?

Only because we've been hearing the same story for the past 30 years - with little to no recognition that the years 2015-2019 were spectacularly positive in just about every measure except total population.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

To be fair, the article did touch upon some of the points that the last few posters commented on, i.e., similar rates of job growth in both cities over the last decade. Yet, GDP growth for Pittsburgh is much higher due to the proximity to fracking industry.  See for example, two few screen shots from the cle.com article below.

All in all, I felt that i learned valuable information from the article. Didn't seem like a hack job, but i no longer live in Ohio, so maybe I don't carry the same sensitivities to how news is presented locally. Anyway,  all good.

This is cool:

"NEW YORK, August 3, 2021 (Newswire.com) - Product Collective, a fast-growing digital media company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, announced today the acquisition of the New York Product Conference (NYPC). Attracting hundreds of attendees each year, the NYPC is held at The Times Center in Manhattan. This year, the in-person event takes place on Nov. 11, making its return after a COVID-forced hiatus in 2020 (a successful virtual event was held in its place attracting over a thousand attendees). The NYPC has played an important role in serving the New York Product Management community for the past several years — drawing attendees from companies like American Express, Instagram, Warby Parker, Mailchimp, and others....."

2.8% growth. Growing is good!

Best of all, glad to see construction up 10 percent -- a leading economic indicator rather than a trailing indicator.

How closely do companies follow census data? Might seeing that the Cleveland MSA is officially growing again lead to further investment down the line that otherwise might not have come our way?

Perhaps but at the same time we had the slowest growth rate of any metro over a million people (even Pittsburgh ended up doing better) so I don’t think that the census helped all too much. Hope I’m wrong.

Everything seems to suggest that Cleveland was growing pre-pandemic. Based on seasonally adjusted stats, the labor force in February 2020 was the highest since 2010. It all seemed to turn around in 2016. And look at that growth in 2019-Early 2020.

Seasonally adjusted data:

For those who are interested, Mac from Cleveland Kitchen was on The Lay of the Land podcast a few months back. (Episode 20 if you aren’t using Apple’s sucky podcast app.) By the way - that’s a GREAT podcast if you are curious about the local entrepreneur scene.

It seems to be a pretty small acquisition for a company as large as SHW. I looked around and saw that manufacturing companies which earned about $70 million in annual revenue tended to have about 400 to 500 employees. Among coatings companies, only about 5 percent of its total workforce was in the HQ, which was also the case for SHW. So we're probably only talking about 20-25 additional HQ employees.

They sell some of their products at Whole Foods here in NYC.- that's pretty major. I've only had their salad dressings, some of which are vegan/plant-based - it's a great product and now my go to.

Cleveland Hopkins just posted July traffic numbers that are down a mere 12% from July of 2019.  That's pretty impressive considering all the doom-and-gloom travel business stories.

Edit: I posted this here instead of the airport thread because I think it's generally indicative of a reviving economy.

https://www.clevelandairport.com/about-us/facts-figures

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

That doesn't necessarily mean that the economy is fully revived. July is one of the peak leisure travel months. Business travel is still down significantly industry-wide and many airlines have revised their projections downwards into 2022.

I couldn't find it on the Cleveland airport website, but I would be willing to bet that budget and leisure focused airlines like Frontier, Spirit, and Southwest had almost normal numbers while the legacy airlines of Delta, American, and United were still well below their 2019 peaks.

Freudian slip?

No, but it's an indicator that area disposable income is up.  The fact the major airlines are laggards means traffic to New York and Chicago remains depressed - which is New York and Chicago's problem.  Cleveland traffic is almost back to normal levels which means the airport is cash-positive and paying down its debt (thanks to the passenger facility charges which are the same for any destination).

Edited to add:  I did some number crunching to confirm my July, 2021 vs July, 2019 assessment.  While CLE is down 12% from pre-pandemic 2019, Chicago(ORD) is down 20% and New York(LGA) is down 54%.  For further comparison, peer market PIT is down 22%.
