Cleveland Arena Football team to be named Gladiators

Posted by Staff reports

November 28, 2007 - 17:51PM

Cleveland's new Arena Football League franchise headed by former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar will call itself the Gladiators.  Kosar, a part owner and president of the franchise, said in a statement released today that the name "epitomizes what I felt like taking the field every Sunday."

The team's colors will be red, black and silver.  The Gladiators open their season March 3 against the New York Dragons at Quicken Loans Arena.  The franchise was based in Las Vegas last season.  The team will compete in the Eastern Division along with the Dragons, the Columbus Destroyers, the Dallas Desperados and Philadelphia Soul.

Kosar also announced that Mike Levy has been named the team's General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. Levy brings 23 years of professional sports experience to the Gladiators.

Remember him? Cleveland Gladiators waive Peter Warrick

Posted by From staff reports January 24, 2008 11:23AM

Categories: Gladiators

Remember Peter Warrick, the speedy wide receiver who the Browns seriously considered with the No. 1 pick in the 2000 NFL Draft?

Turns out Cleveland's other professional football team, the Gladiators of the Arena Football League, were not interested either. They cut the former Florida State player, now 30 years old and trying to make a comeback in the Arena League.

Warrick last played in the NFL for Seattle in 2006. And, in case you forgot, the Browns selected Courtney Brown over Warrick and Lavar Arrington with the No. 1 pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Tough league for an over 30 guy to make it in...it's all about the speed and conditioning over size.  Not saying that you are done over 30, but it sure gets tougher!

Gladiators leave Vegas behind them

by Dennis Manoloff

Tuesday February 05, 2008, 7:01 AM

Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt will hammer home one point, in particular, when he addresses his players at the opening of camp this morning.  "I'm going to tell them we're the Cleveland Gladiators, and we're starting new," Wilpolt said.  The implicitness is telling: What happened in Vegas should stay in Vegas.

Going forward, Wilpolt would be a happy man if he does not hear any more references to the Las Vegas Gladiators. Las Vegas is the most recent home of the Arena Football League franchise.  The Las Vegas Gladiators, already synonymous with bad, took it to another depth last year.  They went 2-14 -- the worst record in the 19-team league.

The Gladiators' season opener is March 3 against the New York Dragons at The Q.

Destroyers And Cleveland Gladiators To Play For Battle Of The Buckeye State Trophy

02/12/08

Arena Football League (AFL)

COLUMBUS, OH - The defending National Conference champion Columbus Destroyers kick off their 2008 home schedule at Nationwide Arena with a contest against the Cleveland Gladiators (formerly Las Vegas Gladiators), on Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m.

In honor of this new in-state rivalry, the winning team will be awarded the Battle of the Buckeye State Trophy presented by Columbus Worthington Air. The victors will keep the trophy until the teams meet again at the winner's home arena during the 2009 season. The custom trophy features a large Buckeye atop a base crafted from American Walnut and Buckeye wood from Ohio.

Also during the home opener, the 2007 National Conference championship banner will be raised and the first 10,000 fans will receive a 2008 Destroyers magnet schedule. After the game, along with the Nationwide Post- Game Autograph Session, fans are invited to participate in the Giant Eagle Ham Toss.

Great idea, but I think they could have done a better job naming the trophy...

Well at least they didn't name it some cheesy college rivalry name like "Battle of I-75"

drats!  too bad i'll be away.  I would love to get Kosar to sign his "away" jersey I have in my collection.

Football in Cleveland rules anytime, anyplace, anyhow

March 03, 2008 - 23:33PM

You know Cleveland is a football town when it's March 3 and there are 17,391 at Quicken Loans Arena on their feet, clapping, screaming and barking for two linemen!  The fans nearly blew off the roof when Browns left tackle Joe Thomas and defensive lineman Shaun Smith were introduced before the first Arena Football League game in Cleveland Gladiators history.

Then Bernie Kosar walked to midfield to a chorus of "Ber-Nee," "Ber-Nee" and a few chants of "Steelers stink," only they didn't say "stink."  Kosar is the Gladiators' man of many titles: minority owner, president, CEO, recruiter of star quarterback Ray Philyaw -- and, by his own admission, a bit of a meddler drawing up plays for the coaches.

Gladiators win Cleveland debut, 61-49, in front of big, lively crowd

March 03, 2008 - 23:37PM

Gladiators President Bernie Kosar said at the outset of training camp that he expects his club to contend for the Arena Football League playoffs.  It was a bold statement given the franchise's 2-14 record last season in Las Vegas.

Kosar based his optimism largely on the acquisition of veteran quarterback Raymond Philyaw, who signed as a free agent from Kansas City after a relentless pursuit by Kosar.  Philyaw made his boss look very smart Monday night at The Q. Philyaw completed 18 of 23 passes for 240 yards and five touchdowns as the Gladiators defeated the New York Dragons, 61-49.

A crowd of 17,391, energetic from the start, watched the first arena game in the Cleveland area since the Thunderbolts of the early 1990s.

Good to hear the crowd was into it.  Hopefully the Gladiators can get out from under being the "other Browns" at least a little.

2-0 baby!

I went to the game Sunday.  It was definitely worth the ticket price.  The next home game is against, which they kept emphasizing on the announcements, John Elway's Colorado Crush.

There was also a decent amount of people downtown today for a cold, snowy Sunday--I'm guessing IFF, MAC Tournament, and the arena game helped though.

Go Gladiators!!

Gladiators Defeat Destroyers, 59-57

COLUMBUS - The Cleveland Gladiators visited the Columbus Destroyers in the "Battle of the Buckeye State" on Saturday night at Nationwide Arena, defeating the Destroyers, 59-57 in front of 15,946 fans.  The Gladiators improve to 3-0 while the Destroyers fall to 0-3 on the season.

Raymond Philyaw found Robert Redd on a 17-yard touchdown strike late in the game, giving the Gladiators a 59-51 lead.  After Destroyers signal-caller Matt Nagy connected with Derek Lee on a 33-yard score, Columbus failed on the two-point conversion and the Destroyers trailed 59-57.

The Cleveland Gladiators return to Quicken Loans Arena on Friday, April 11 when they face John Elway's Colorado Crush.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.  Good seats are still available by calling 216.685.9000, by visiting any TicketMaster location or online at www.clevelandgladiators.com.

^given the fact that they are 3-0 and that JOHN ELWAY's Crush are coming into town, I'd bet that they're going to see another good crowd on hand at the Q.

It's amazing how quickly you can turn around an AFL franchise with money because of the small roster size, in comparison to the NFL.  Good to see they're doing well, which should help with a continual draw until a fan base is formed.  I've been staying on Long Island until I can find a place in the city, and in the mall at Champs they sell NY Dragons AFL jerseys, hopefully Cleveland can get to that point.

I'm sure the Gladiators AND the AFL licensing and retail divisions have made that a priority.  Once a franchise moves into a market they come up with programs for each market.

So I'm sure sporting goods stores in Cleveland already have Gladiators merchandise on hand.  Once a "star" is identified, they will then position that "stars" jersey and related equipment in prominent location.

MTS, is there anything you don't know or claim to know??

when it comes to fashion, beauty, decor, public relations and marketing...nope!  :-P

ummm....Cleveland stores do sell Gladiator apparel (such as our Champs in Tower City).  I even bought a T-shirt at the "Cleveland Gladiators Store" on Huron, just outside the arena.

EDIT: And Cleveland is getting to a larger fan base??  Well, they already have one of the league's highest home attendence (even more than those NY Dragons).  14,700 people showed up for the last home game with two feet of snow on the ground!

Where is the gladiators store?

Not to be Debbie Downer, but I would like to know if the site you posted, lists actual attendance provided by the league?  "Attendance" at two games cannot be considered a "fan base".  Personally, I think its too soon to state the number.  We have no comparison other than what other teams that have been in the league for more than one year have had at this point.

Attendance alone does not equate fan base.  What is radio/tv reaching, where are sales of product coming from, etc.

Who knew.  I thought they were in TC.

Ummm.. sorry Murray Hill, I don't live in Ohio anymore so I can't exactly frequent local shoppes.. and it's called the "lust" phase, lets talk in a couple years when they average this over that time span.

Prediction:

If they keep winning, the attendance will continue. If they go to the playoffs and play hard, the fan base will be established. After that, a good year for The Browns will help The Gladiators get off to a great start next year.

I'm currently in North Carolina, where it is difficult to catch a Browns Game without Direct TV. I have cable. You can be sure I'm at the bar every Sunday during the season. Anyone have any information on the possibility of some Gladiator TV coverage down this way? I'm already a fan and I haven't seen one single game, yet.

The Gladiators' 47-35 victory clinched a playoff berth for the team in its first season in Cleveland.  Before the season, Gladiators President Bernie Kosar said he expected his team to make the playoffs.  It was a bold statement, given that Kosar had gutted a roster largely responsible for a 2-14 record in Las Vegas last year.

Kosar's called shot came to fruition Saturday night.  The Gladiators, needing a victory to make the playoffs, disposed of the Columbus Destroyers, 47-35, at The Q in the regular-season finale.  The Gladiators franchise clinched its first postseason berth since 2003.  Cleveland (9-7) could host a postseason game if New York were to lose to Philadelphia on Sunday.

Good to see they're still drawing well, having a home playoff game would be great and hopefully can carry over with attendance next season.

CLEVELAND -- For Cleveland fans desperate for a championship team, they may just get their dream.  All their hopes lie with the Cleveland Gladiators, who advanced to the second round of playoffs with a 69-66 win over the Orlando Predators Monday night at Quicken Loans Arena.  It was the first round of the playoffs in the National Conference of the Arena Football League.

Cleveland Gladiators' Mike Wilpolt named Arena League Coach of the Year

Posted by dcampbel July 08, 2008 17:04PM

Cleveland Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt today was named the 2008 Arena Football League Coach of the Year, as voted by AFL head coaches, fans, players and the Arena Football League Writers Association. Wilpolt becomes the first head coach in franchise history

to earn the honor.

Following a disappointing 2-14 season, Gladiators owner Jim Ferraro named Wilpolt head coach of the Las Vegas Gladiators on Sept. 9, 2007. Wilpolt made the transition to Cleveland when Ferraro moved the team in October.

Wilpolt guided his team to a 9-7 regular-season finish, qualifying for the playoffs for just

the fifth time in the 11-year franchise history. After a 73-70 win over the Georgia Force on Monday night, Wilpolt will lead his team into the National Conference Championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Philadelphia Soul.

In 2004, Wilpolt took over the 0-5 Indiana Firebirds and led them to an 8-8 record to earn recognition as a finalist for Coach of the Year.

http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/07/cleveland_gladiators_mike_wilp.html

I watched the game last night.  I've never been a big fan of AFL football, but I'm kind of psyched about a Cleveland team possibly winning it all.  They certainly have the best chance at present moment.  I think I'll definantly take my boys to the Q to see a game next year, looks like a very exciting version of football.

Go Gladiators!!!

Ahhh, I remember when I started this thread :)

So what is your prediction?  I need to win a bet!

Haha do I need to bring up the NFL Playoffs poll, MTS?

Haha do I need to bring up the NFL Playoffs poll, MTS?

Hell, that is exactly why I'm asking for your prediction!

Sadly, I think they'll lose the game vs. Philly.  But I'll gladly eat crow if they win.

Gee...thanks!  :|

They didn't make it to Arena Bowl, but did give us a good season.  I think they've positioned themselves as a contender going forward.

Thanks Gladiators!

Gladiators' Arena League title hopes hurdled by Soul in 70-35 romp

"That return took it out of us," Cleveland quarterback Raymond Philyaw said, following the Philadelphia Soul's 70-35 victory in Saturday's Arena League National Conference title game.  Matt D'Orazio threw a franchise-record eight touchdown passes to help propel the Soul (15-3) to ArenaBowl XXII in New Orleans on July 27.

"My goal was to enjoy myself," said D'Orazio, a six-year veteran who led the Chicago Rush to an AFL championship two seasons ago but started the season as Philadelphia's backup quarterback. "There's no doubt the whole team had fun."

I guess an announcement will be made around 4:00 whether or not the league will fold.

AFL delays '09 schedule again, this time indefinitely

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Soul are scouting players and working toward defending their Arena League Football title, even as the league has delayed for the third time the release of the 2009 schedule and the start of free agency.  The league, which has been seeking ways to improve its financial footing, said Tuesday it still is not ready to announce its longterm plan.  Unlike the previous two delays, the league said this one is indefinite.

"The AFL is working on long-term structural improvements which have unfortunately delayed some important events," acting commissioner Ed Policy said in a statement.  "We thank our fans for their enthusiasm for these events and ask them to be patient a little longer while we finalize our long-term improvements. All AFL teams are working towards winning ArenaBowl XXIII."  AFL spokesman Chris McCloskey said the league had no additional comment.

There are no clear answers when the indoor league's 16 teams might be able to start signing free agents. The dispersal draft for the players of the New Orleans VooDoo, also delayed again, was originally scheduled for October.  New Orleans dropped out of the league despite being near the top of the league in attendance the past two seasons.  Saints owner Tom Benson, who also owned the VooDoo, said the decision was based on "circumstances currently affecting the league and the team."

Report: AFL to call off '09 season, reorganize for 2010 return

ESPN.com news services

Updated: December 15, 2008, 8:26 AM ET

The AFL will shut down for 2009 but plans to reorganize and return in 2010, The Cleveland Plain Dealer and New York Times have reported.

Citing a league source, The Plain Dealer said an official announcement would come Monday.  The Times reported the announcement was conditional on approval from the players' association.  Officials held a conference call last week and announced that no consensus had been reached and that talks would continue in hopes of coming up with a better business model.

According to The Plain Dealer's source, the league's board of directors met by conference call again Sunday and voted to shut down because too many big-name owners or big-name cities said they would not return in 2009.  The AFL has endured a season of uncertainty.  On Tuesday, the 16-team league delayed indefinitely the start of free agency, the release of its 2009 schedule and a dispersal draft to award players from the defunct New Orleans VooDoo.

No permanent replacement has been named for longtime commissioner David Baker, who abruptly resigned from the 22-year-old league in July two days before the ArenaBowl championship game.
