January 26, 200718 yr Hell, people from the suburbs refer to Greater Clifton as "downtown". I consider downtown to be just the CBD but a lot of people that live in OTR will just say they live downtown.
January 26, 200718 yr We need to come up with a working Urban Ohio definition of downtown cincinnati. I vote to include everything in the basin that isn't on a substantial incline east of 75, south of linn st. and east of the end of theodore berry international frienship park.Â
January 26, 200718 yr I always considered "downtown" to be the central business district in any town. Â
January 26, 200718 yr Max,  I did not want to sit here and type out the different names of communities that I have rentals in that are a couple of blocks apart and all have different names. However I have more time now so let me rephrase.... I am not sure what is available in the rental market outside of CBD, Mt. Auburn, Main St. Dist, Brewery Dist. West End, Prospect Hill, Sycamore Hill, Pendleton, Mt. Adams, Liberty Hill, Sycamore Hill, or City West.  From now on I will just copy and paste and invite others to do so when referring to what most consider...Downtown.  Downtown is a relative term, not an equivalent term to the CBD. It is relative to the one who is speaking as Kenwood is uptown to me and so is Blue Ash and so is Amberly and so on. When speaking to my family in Amberly they believe and say I live "downtown" and that is correct.  Main Entry: 1down·town Pronunciation: "daun-'taun Function: adjective 1 : of, relating to, or located in the lower part or business center of a city
January 26, 200718 yr Michael, ok so the next time there is a murder or serious crime in OTR, West end you would agree the news media should say that it happened downtown? No wonder the suburbanites are afraid to come to fountain square. Downtown=CBD
January 26, 200718 yr Did you raise this point when Gateway and the American Building or even the Emery were on the downtown tour of living?  When they say that downtown is booming with new construction, and downtown is coming back, OTR and West End can piggy back on that as well and vise versa. And to say that OTR is the reason that people do not want to come to the CBD is probably not what you want to say to an OTR resident. I lived in the CBD on 7th and I owned a business there as well and there were a whole myriad of reasons that people did not want to come "downtown" safety wasn't the only one.  CBD=CBD but downtown is a bit more arbitrary as is urban. And why is it the Comey Shepherd City Office? they are all city offices! but I digress...
January 26, 200718 yr A massive renovation is about to happen at 160 Goethe St. This is the only house on that side of the street. They are also building a 1000+ square-foot addition. My guess is that they'll build up to take advantage of the view.  I have always thought that I knew everything that happens on that hillside but I was surprised at what I saw today. 160 Goethe is almost complete and they have done one hell of a job on this place, I barely recognized it. If anyone is out and about with a camera, post this place.  Michael -  Is that the building on the right hand side of the street after you make the turn onto Goethe?
January 26, 200718 yr turn left onto Goethe, and it will be on your right side (uphill side) of the street. It is still under const. and there is a pallet of bricks sitting in front of it so you can not miss it.
January 26, 200718 yr Cool - I'll have to check it out this weekend , I am anxious to see what they are doing. If I'm thinking of the right place, my brother in law and I came close to making an offer for that property and the two adjacent lots about a year and a half or two years ago.Â
January 27, 200718 yr Crime stats for Michaels "downtown" living 2006:16 murders, 57 Rapes, 528 robberies ,395 auto thefts. Mt auburn was not included in these #'s but it should be since prospect hill is also considered "downtown" etc. :-D Â Â Â Â Â
January 27, 200718 yr ^when the average person says "downtown" they are referring to the basin in general. The difference between crime statistics and media coverage of downtown versus that of the average citizen's definition of downtown is that crime is very localized and should be split up into neighborhoods to accurately portrey where the crime took place. Anyone that knows the city knows the difference between OTR and the CBD but still may call them both "downtown" because they make up the downtown region, much like how people call the uptown neighborhoods Clifton even though Clifton is just a small sector of that region.
January 27, 200718 yr thank you edale. Max, you are causing me to start drinking earlier and earlier, you call it what you will, and I and the rest of the city will do the same and lets call it a day.
February 20, 200718 yr Saw the preliminary plans for the new 2 family on liberty hill. It has garages in THE FRONT of the house(on liberty hill) has what looks like pebbles blended in concrete to be in the lower half of the house. Luckily this is just preliminary.
February 20, 200718 yr Yes there are garages right underneath. He doesn't have any buyers yet so you might want to take a peek at the plans they are going to be sold in the 400K range. They have a wonderful view of powerlines at eye level and of the downtown skyline. Â Â I was hoping that there would be garages behind the house on corporation alley.
February 20, 200718 yr Doug Spitz has equipment in place to begin the teardown of 316?, it will probably begin today (the blue house on the north east side of Mulberry).Â
February 24, 200718 yr Actually, 221 Dorsey Street pictured a few up by Grasscat has an Open House tomorrow from 430P to 530P. Personally looking at lots on Dorsey, Seitz, and Mulberry to build on.
April 2, 200718 yr Ok, I am having a hard time keeping up with what is coming to the East side of Mulberry at Mulberry and Sycamore. I heard today that there will be 7 new construction homes 3 on Mulberry, 4 on Sycamore (or vise versa) I am still trying to find out the particulars.  Vinyard Homes now has two lots on the south side that Jerry can now build two seperate houses as opposed to two with a common wall.  Doug Spitz has torn down 1 building to give him what looks like 6 lots, 3 on Seitz and 3 on Mulberry, I have not seen the plans yet. Plus lots on the south of Mulberry and going down the East Side of Main  OTR housing Network actually came in with some nice plans for new const condos on Mulberry and Peete, market rate but with a soft second. GBBN is the arcitects so despite the original knee jerk reaction I usually have when I hear a building project by Mary Burke, I will say her organization seems to be coming through on this one.  Joe Gorman appears ready to begin building on either Seitz or Goethe or both, I believe it is Goethe.  Foundations are in at Frank's 2 houses on Milton, I will probably officially have them on the market here in a month or so.  This is the year for the hillside!
April 3, 200718 yr Foundations are in at Frank's 2 houses on Milton, I will probably officially have them on the market here in a month or so. So he is not going to be living in 1 of them?? interesting. Thanks for the update mike, good to hear about the new stuff.
April 3, 200718 yr Well that was the plan, and still may be. However the argument that he had with the community and with Historic really upset the Fielers and the requested that we just sell both of them. Now this could still change, the argument is still fresh in their minds so who knows.
April 10, 200718 yr A massive renovation is about to happen at 160 Goethe St. If anyone is out and about with a camera, post this place.  thanks for the complement! I'm the architect / owner / general contractor for 160 Goethe. For more pics and info check out our website at briansaraaschliman.com i'd love more info regarding any other development on goethe.
April 10, 200718 yr You have done a tremendous job! My wife and I were just up there again yesterday and it is looking fantastic. As for other dev. on Goethe, the only thing I know of active in the pipeline at this moment is Gorman's project. I heard just the other day that he has proposed 11 new homes, and do not quote me on this, it is second hand info but I need to talk to Joe this week so I will pick his brain. Keep checking on here, as I get more info, I will post it.
April 11, 200718 yr What other projects has mr. gorman done in the area that i might take a look at? thanks.
April 11, 200718 yr ^great work. You took a really ugly building (no offense) and made it something amazing(copper roof, nice). I took a look at your web page and seeing all the work involved, digging into bedrock, etc., that's heck of a lot of work. I can see why so many these building get torn down instead.
April 11, 200718 yr What other projects has mr. gorman done in the area that i might take a look at? thanks  Well....he helped at least aquire the land that Jerry Hunderlaw's houses are on, on Mulberry (the 5 new on the north side, 126-134 Mulberry) and I am not necessarily saying that he is the builder but he and others have the land to be developed and according to John Coulter, he is involved as well. John lives on Dorsey (great guy) he has done at least the two that are between Dorsey and Goethe and he has been in an advisory role to another rehab that is underway on Dorsey as well as consulting with my wife and I on our house on Mulberry.  I put a call out to Joe Gorman last night so I am just waiting for a call back. I believe his plans are done and he is about ready to go but I will find out more.
April 11, 200718 yr Thanks for not tearing it down like some other people 'round these parts would do or would like to do. I like the house before the remodel and after.
April 23, 200718 yr Once again, I am taken by surprise on my own street.  217 Mulberry is being gutted right now. I am trying to find out what the story is on this as well as two buildings that Model Management just sold (and I do not know who to just yet) but heard through the grapevine that they two will go under construction in approx 3 months.  Â

June 27, 200717 yr before and current (after photos to be posted when we're totally done) I was on Goethe last night - great job on the house!! It looks fantastic.
June 29, 200717 yr agreed, but just out of curiosity, why the white garage door? check again. The exterior painting was finished this week. I'll post pics soon.
September 4, 200717 yr well the rendering leaves little to be desired IMO. The price points seem right though.
September 5, 200717 yr Ummmmm, Why does the Mt Auburn place website use the Klotter St vantage point for the photograph? See the busken donut billboard? that is at the corner of central parkway and Linn! Next thing you know they will say this is downtown! Local realtors need to start using a map
September 5, 200717 yr They stole our picture!!!!! Â http://urbanohio.com/SWOhio/Cincinnati/Skyline/Night1.jpg
September 5, 200717 yr They stole our picture!!!!!  http://urbanohio.com/SWOhio/Cincinnati/Skyline/Night1.jpg  They absolutely did steal that picture. Unless every office and residence in view had the same lights on two different nights when the sky was the same and the smoke from that building under Carew was blowing in precisely the same way...I assume they didn't ask permission?  Theives. Â
September 5, 200717 yr  I assume they didn't ask permission?  They did not ask permission. Going to shoot them an email about it soon. I put the logo on that picture because alot of people use it as their background picture.....free advertising.Â
September 5, 200717 yr *wrapping chain around fist* Â vicious dogs now circling behind me...just waiting for instruction
September 5, 200717 yr It's not a big deal, it happens all the time. It would be nice if people atleast asked before stealing.
