It's not a big deal, it happens all the time.  It would be nice if people atleast asked before stealing.

 

Rich, like someone else mentioned ... get a screen shot (quick) and then follow through with what is right! You guys pay good money for your cameras and time is money. You should at least request some sort of reimbursement.

I'm not defending the design, but as an architect who has worked with developers, aesthetics aren't usually high on their list of priorities.  Criticism should be dolled out appropriately. ;-)

As an urban designer who works ONLY with developers, aesthetics aren't usually high on their list of priorities and sometimes aren't on their list of priorities AT ALL. But I still wouldn't design something crappy. Because I don't design crappy things.

America has paid dearly for having not enough design snobs and too many pragmatists. Extruding the corner towers 24 inches beyond the main building wall wouldn't have killed this developer's program, and it probably wouldn't have killed Heather to do it.

 

So yeah, mean of me, but not inappropriate criticism, since it's my profession.

I don't think it's mean, and I'm not relieving the architect of responsibility, but it's a question that I have struggled with before.  If your client is dead set on doing a poor design, whether that be functional or aesthetic, does dropping them as a client really help solve the problem (and as an aside, not everyone has that luxury)?  All they are going to do is find someone else to do the same thing.  Maybe she pushed them to that design from an even worse design.

Soil samples were taken yesterday on corporation alley for the proposed single family.

 

 

We lost another building last night right across the street from Rothenburg.

 

Fire destoyed the building at Schiller and main.

Was the building destroyed that greenish-colored one on the corner?

yes, it is the one next to Larry Rhodes building that is coming down.  I would be surprised if the burned building comes down because I believe it was going to be gutted anyway, now they have the insurance money to redo it.  The outer shell is still intact.  It does appear that Doug Spitz is preparing to do something on his lots all around this location, I hope to know more in a couple of weeks.

Good news about the building, Michael.  Free interior demo!

When I talked with the City about their available property in the area, they said Spitz was the only interested developer.  The proposals were due last week, so it will be interesting to see if they come up with a good proposal from him.

 

Well I do know of one other that was going to throw their hat into the ring on those lots so I do not know if Doug is a done deal or not in regards to the cities lots.

Work should be starting the first week of April on the new single family home in the 400 block of corporation alley. There will be another home built just south on liberty hill at a later date.

  Yes, where the gravel pad is.  No teardowns, that yellow house is still for sale. ( house is probably about 60 K too much) Nice location though.

For you history buffs like myself  :-) I may have shown you guys this before but for those who haven't seen it. Some of my favorite scenes in the Prospect Hill/Mulberry Hill area done by one of my all time fave local artists Caroline Williams around 1933.  Enjoy!

I believe she did one of Glencoe as well.  We have been debating for a while about whether the house at the top of the Fintz st steps is my house or if it is a house on the north side of the street that is no longer there.  It can not be the house next to the steps because we have a photo from David Day's father that shows a full grown tree at that location dating back to 1927.  Also that photo shows Goethe extending over much further than it does now.  I heard from a lady who's grandparents lived in my house (and she is in her 80's) that they were lost to a land slide.  I believe the maps dating back show that as Quarry St.

The site of the first picture could so easily be restored back to look exactly like that.  A house collapsed there about a year ago at 19 Peete and the whole area is just overgrown.

They can all be found in a book called "Cincinnati Scenes" by the artist.  I just picked up a copy for less than $10...

Yes, I got mine from alibris, from a used bookstore in NY of all places, my copy is also signed by the author, a nice plus of the books available through alibris (you can find signed copies, etc)

Update on the Doug Spitz project on Mulberry.

 

After several years of asking for assistance with the development of our

Where the new houses? Come on, at least before I could watch the Peregrine Falcon that used to visit that area of trees.

 

 

The last time I talked to Doug back in July, I think he said he - like other builders I have talked to - was not starting going to start any new residential project unless it was pre-sold. 

 

There are over 20 properties currently on the market just on Boal, Milton, & Mulberry streets.  Not a good time to add to the inventory.

There is movement by the Fielers (developers of the Ft. Washington and 2 homes on Milton) on their properties to the East of Vernon Raders at Liberty and Hughes.

The one next to the red is where their son lives.  But there has been some action on the red one as well but I do not know if that is them or not.

At the neighborhood's northern end, Schimberg is also calling for the city to make Auburn Avenue a no-parking zone, widen the street, and install new sidewalks, lighting and plantings for safety. Gridlock is common among during the day on Auburn and East McMillan avenues.

 

Looking at that street on streetview I don't see how widening it can be done without demolition.  Also, I don't think its THAT heavily used a street, its going to kill the pedestrian friendliness of this area too.

The Wellington Place development in the recent Enquirer article sounds a lot bigger than what was planned in the Business Courrier article from last November. It'd be great if they can develop Glencoe Place. I wonder if he is thinking he can get the streetcar routed through Inwood Park on its way up the hill?

Hopefully. Squeezing in a right turn lane would be possible without demolition, and allow traffic to get from Auburn to McMillan and off towards the highway. As it stands now, traffic backs up because right on red is limited by sharing a lane with traffic continuing straight, and left during parking hours. Of course most of the lanes in that area are narrower than standard, so I could see the thing exploding into a much larger project in order to accommodate wider lanes.

Exactly. And now that the corner is more open allowing for a better turn from McMillan to Auburn is possible. That intersection can be rough when a bus goes through since all lanes involved are narrow.

^ But that's exactly what makes the intersection SAFER.  It's so tight that everyone has to be extra slow and careful when driving through there.  Yes, big vehicles turning onto Auburn from McMillan is a problem, but widening the lanes, broadening the curves, improving sight lines, etc. only makes people drive faster, endangering everyone even more.  That's when you end up with an intersection like Clifton and MLK, which we all know is an unmitigated safety disaster, precisely because it was engineered only for automobile safety and easy turns.
