Posted January 27, 200817 yr I didn't take much notice of Starr Hill until forumer BigRedM suggested it for a photo thread, but it's worth a look. Relatively close to downtown, Starr Hill sits opposite of Italian Village on the west side of the Great Miami. It is just a few blocks from the Champion Paper Mill, once the largest paper mill in the world. Based on its original name (Champion Terrace) and the fact that most of the nearby subdivisions were built specifically for the Champion employees, I assume this neighborhood was constructed for the same reason. Oddly, development never spread north of this neighborhood until the 1990's, when the City of Hamilton annexed a large portion of St. Clair Township and extended Washington Boulevard through the area. A couple decent--but suburban--subdivisions, a new Freshman school, office complex, church, senior condos, and a massive retirement community occupy that property. The retirement community, named Berkeley Square after the affluent suburb of London, directly backs Starr Hill...a really odd juxtaposition. From Hamilton Historian Jim Blount: Warwickshire, more commonly known as Starr Hill, is a Hamilton residential area northeast of Two Mile Creek and northwest of North B Street, including the streets of Starr, Summer, Martin, Kenton, Lagonda and Willow. The subdivision was first platted in November 1906 as Champion Terrace. Hamilton Power Plant Black Street Combs Park, a 65 acre park between the Great Miami and Starr Hill that floods several times a year. The American Way More senior living on the way!!! January 27, 200817 yr Nice! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 27, 200817 yr Very good photos. I lived in Fairfield, but went to grade school and high school in Hamilton. The majority of my friends were from there and I spent a lot of time growing up there. These photos bring back a lot of memories of people I don't get to see much of anymore, I really like them.
January 27, 200817 yr Interesting; there are some pretty cute houses in the neighborhood. Does Hamilton still operate its own electrical generating plant? That's pretty uncommon for cities that size, because they have difficulty financing the emission-control upgrades required by law and competing with the economies of scale that the big regional producers can attain.

Yep, Hamilton still generates its own power and is generally about 15% cheaper than Duke Energy, Greater Cincinnati's power provider. The city also generates power from a hydroelectic plant on the Greenup Dam on the Ohio River and is planning to build another plant on the Melhdal (sp?) Dam as well.
January 27, 200817 yr Not sure I agree that it's worth a look, but it is worth giving a complete picture of the city. It's no Dayton Lane, that's for sure.
January 28, 200817 yr Man, even I didn't know the name of that neighborhood! I always considered Hamilton a little socialist state since they owned at one time the power, water, wastewater, gas & trash. It made it much cheaper and still does than other places. My father always said his biggest accomplishment was the successful litigation against Vanceburg and the getting control of the power at the Greenup Dam. He was very practical and definately a numbers guy . . .
January 31, 200817 yr  Thank you very much for the tour, Ink! One thing I noticed was it being "opposite of Italian Village on the west side of the Great Miami." Where is the Italian Village? That's a new name for me! Is that where Gordon and Webster Avenues run on the other side of Two Mile Creek?
January 31, 200817 yr ^Gordon and Webster are Riverview, I believe, although I bunch all that in with Prospect Hill or Rheadon. Itailian Village is wedged between the power plant, Black Street, the river and the canal--basically homes on North Third across from the power plant and Water/N. 2nd Street. If they bulldozened it tomorrow, no one would have a regret.
