October 15, 200717 yr ^ Look at this guy! Cleveland makes it to the playoffs and now they're telling everyone how to play the game! lol ... gotribe, I'm just kidding. I agree with everything you said.
October 16, 200717 yr Baker sign a 3yr, $11 million deal. I never would a guess they would pay that kind of money for a manager. This will be interesting to follow now that they got their "big-name manager" and hired outside the organization. Glad there's more to look forward to than the Red Sox coming to town next year.

November 16, 200717 yr I'm not ashamed to admit a bawled like a baby this morning listening to the tributes on the various stations. My prayers go out to his family. I can't think of too many things that were better than sitting on the back porch with my dad in the summer listening to Marty and Joe. Joe was the most beloved sports figure in Cincinnati, check that, I would argue he was the most beloved figure of any kind in Cincinnati. Joe was Cincinnati, Joe was Reds baseball....Rest in peace, ol' left hander...
November 16, 200717 yr It's been a real pleasure listening to the guys on 700 today, old-timers and not so old timers, from the field and the booth, reminiscing about Joe. It was great listening to him all those years with Marty, and his laconic style actually spoiled me for analysts who think they need fill every second of air. He really let the game come through the radio rather than forcing it. I don't think it was a practiced style, certainly not a polished delivery, just his nature. And while the later years saw some decline, it was still great to hear him on a game, and it made for some great calls. I forget the scenario, but I'll paraphrase one of my favorite Joe calls: "Fly ball to right... under it is soandso, going back, bbb, byebye, byebye ball." After a pause, Marty clarified, calmly, "that was a home run." He'll be missed.
November 16, 200717 yr Sad news. Always loved listening to Marty & Joe on WLW from here in Columbus. He will be missed.
November 16, 200717 yr Wow that was a shock when clicking on this thread. Cincinnati has lost a legend.

November 24, 200717 yr Source: Reds, closer Cordero have preliminary agreement By Jerry Crasnick http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3124583
November 26, 200717 yr The Hot Stove season is heating up. Interesting and hopeful pickup for the Reds. Last season's closer David Weathers was the one bright spot in an otherwise horrible bullpen. With Cordero as closer, Weathers moves into a setup role. Let's hope that Cordero and Weathers can be a dependable relief duo for the Redlegs next year.
November 29, 200717 yr In Dusty, Cordero trusted Reds' $46M closer credits Baker BY JOHN FAY | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER November 29, 2007 CINCINNATI - Players around baseball talk highly of Dusty Baker. The trickle-down effect from that was a huge factor in Francisco Cordero becoming a Cincinnati Red. The $46 million the Reds will pay Cordero was the biggest thing, of course, but Cordero mentioned the Dusty Factor several times Wednesday when he was introduced officially as a Red. The Reds targeted Cordero at their organizational meetings in early October. Cordero, a 32-year-old right-hander, saved 44 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last season. He had a 2.98 ERA and struck out 86 and walked only 18 in 63 1/3 innings. "This is a guy our scouts said from Day 1: 'Wow, if we got Francisco Cordero on the team, what a difference it would make to our bullpen,' " Krivsky said.
December 2, 200717 yr Now they should unload one of the big sluggers in the outfield and build the team around small ball and speed backed up by a better bullpen. It' definitely too early to talk rosters, but c: Ross 1: Cantu 2: Phillips 3: Encarnacion (?) ss: Gonzalez of: Hopper of: Hamilton of: Griffey
December 9, 200717 yr RedsFest sets attendance mark December 9, 2007 | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER DOWNTOWN - More than 20,000 fans attended the two-day Kahn's Redsfest Friday and Saturday at the Duke Energy Center downtown. Attendance for the two days was 20,165, the Reds said, breaking the mark of 18,080 set last year. The event benefited the Reds Community Fund. The Reds also announced that pitcher Aaron Harang donated $40,000 to the Miracle League of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky's field for children with disabilities, which will be built at Oskamp Recreation Area in Western Hills. Harang and Chevrolet previously donated $15,000 to the project when Harang was named club recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award.
January 5, 200817 yr Reds make 6 acquisitions Krivsky says club's still pursuing veteran starting pitcher BY JOHN FAY | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER January 5, 2008 CINCINNATI - The Reds added six players to the spring training mix Friday. None of them will get a lot of attention, but don't be surprised if the Reds add a pitcher who could be in the rotation from the start. First, Friday's moves: The Reds picked up outfielder Jeff Fiorentino off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. They signed right-hander Jim Brower, left-hander Adam Pettyjohn and infielders Andy Green, Jolbert Cabrera and Andy Phillips to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training. But Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said the club has not given up on adding a veteran starting pitcher. Asked if the Reds were pursuing some of the big-name unsigned free-agent pitchers, such as right-handers Jon Lieber and Livan Hernandez, Krivsky would not talk specifics but said:
January 9, 200817 yr Fogg could be Reds target BY JOHN FAY | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER January 8, 2008 CINCINNATI - The Reds didn’t sign any free agents pitchers today. But neither did anyone else in baseball. Things have slowed down considerably on the free agent market. Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky remains hopeful that the Reds will be able to add a veteran arm to the rotation. Krivsky will not name names. But it’s believed that the Reds have been in contact with right-hander Josh Fogg. Fogg went 10-9 with a 4.94 ERA last year with the Colorado Rockies. It was the fifth time in six years that he reached double figures in wins.
January 10, 200817 yr ^ Boy, I hope the reds don't go after Josh Fogg. He has always been a junk pitcher and he will fare terribly as a Red. Because of the dimensions of Great American Ballpark, only only strikeout pitchers will be successful. Both Bronson Arroyo (one K per 1.1 inning) and Aaron Harrang (nearly one k per inning) prove this point. In this career, Fogg strikes out one batter every two innings. He has a career 4.90 ERA and a .286 Batting Average Against. I don't see the appeal. I'd rather have Matt Maloney or Johnny Cueto out there. Granted, I don't know who Maloney or Cueto are but at least they wouldn't be wasting payroll money!
January 10, 200817 yr Fogg's always been all about potential but no production. We don't need another Jimmy Haynes-type...throw him out there and hope he turns it around. Especially when, as you said, we could get similar results with someone who gets paid the MLB minimum. I don't think we necessarily need strikeout pitchers, we just need pitchers who throw strikes and keep the ball down. Fly ball pitchers are a no-no in that bandbox.
January 15, 200817 yr Come on Reds, be progressive! Reds in AZ is the future. I may have go out there more than twice a year. Goodyear is kind of far from the perfecta that is Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix - all within a half hour of each other, but I'll take it. Reds to scout Goodyear, Ariz. Orlando only Fla. city making pitch to be spring home BY JOHN FAY | [email protected] Reds COO John Allen will be in Goodyear, Ariz., Wednesday to hear that city’s pitch to become the Reds’ new spring training home. Goodyear is where the Cleveland Indians will begin training in 2009. The city is pitching a plan for the Reds to share the complex with the Indians. The Reds started looking for a new spring home in November after a referendum for the last piece of funding to rebuild the Ed Smith Stadium complex was voted down in Sarasota. The response from other Florida cities trying to land the Reds has been underwhelming. At this point, Orlando is only city making a pitch to land the Reds. January 16, 200817 yr Arizona looking to woo Reds to new spring-training home Carrie Watters, Jessica Coomes and Tony Lombardo The Arizona Republic, Nov. 13, 2007 12:00 AM Voters in Sarasota, Fla., recently rejected paying for renovations to the Cincinnati Reds' training stadium, which leaves the team looking for a new spring home - and Arizona wondering if it could snare another Florida team. Eyes are on Tucson, where the Chicago White Sox need to find a replacement team to get out of their lease and move to the Valley. The Sox plan to team up with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a spring-training ballpark that Glendale hopes to open in 2009. "We would love to have the Reds in the Cactus League. The logical place, considering the dynamics, would be Tucson Electric Park," said Brad Wright, an Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority board member who heads the Cactus League committee. "The first priority is a commitment to Tucson and the White Sox to make sure they can meet their obligation there." To read more: http://www.ci.goodyear.az.us/Archive.asp?ADID=1590
January 16, 200817 yr M u s t n o t g i v e u p h o p e , the Reds need to move beyond the geriatric set. Sarasota still wants Reds BY JOHN FAY | [email protected] As former Reds chief operating officer John Allen prepares to tour a possible new spring training home for the team today in Goodyear, Ariz., officials in Sarasota are renewing their efforts to keep the club in Florida. Pat Calhoon, the facility manager for Ed Smith Stadium in Sarosota, said Tuesday he expects that Sarasota government officials will consider a proposal next Tuesday to fund impovements to the stadium, which the Reds say are necessary if they are to stay. January 16, 200817 yr Here's a pic of the new and improve training facility Sarasota officials want to build. Keep in mind $53m can buy a lot of wheelchairs, walkers, meals on wheels, and drugs for the citizens of Sarasota whose average age is like 75+.
January 16, 200817 yr Terrible late breaking news . . . :x Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008 at 5:47 p.m. Deal could keep Reds in Sarasota By CAROL E. LEE, [email protected] SARASOTA — And they’re back. City residents who thought the Cincinnati Reds would leave town after voters rejected a property tax increase to help fund a refurbished spring training facility for the team should, well, think again. The city, the county and the Reds have devised yet another scaled back stadium project to keep the Reds in Sarasota for 30 more years. City and county commissioners will vote on a the “alternative stadium plan concept” at separate meetings next week. If it is approved, the city, the county and the Reds have 45 days to come up with a finalized agreement. The new plan is a to rebuild Ed Smith Stadium at a cost of $41 million, instead of $54 million as proposed before. To read more: http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20080115/BREAKING01/56201600
January 17, 200817 yr I have been to spring training in Sarasota. It is an awesome town and a very good time. I hope that the powers that be can figure out a way to keep the Reds there. I will never go to a spring training in Arizona, but I would love to go back to Ed Smith Stadium!
January 18, 200817 yr The tide could be turning. Yes! I will bet they just found out they wouldn't have to drop $9m to move to Goodyear like in that other town. Don't worry, I'll take plenty of pics, it be like your there your self. :-) Thursday, January 17, 2008 Allen on Goodyear Just talked to John Allen about the Goodyear field trip. It sounds likes the Reds were impressed. Bob Castellini was there for part of the tour. “It was great,” Allen said. “It was very informative. They have a good plan.” The group also went to Surprise, where the Rangers and Royals share a facility, to check out how the two-team thing works. “Basically, you have a game at stadium everyday. The Royals and Rangers play each other four times, so you don’t have to worry about overexposure.” To read more: http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/redsinsider/
January 18, 200817 yr Here's some nifty images of the new stadium in Goodyear, AZ. Everyone on this forum should support this developement, two words - Mixed Use. "The ballpark will be the centerpiece of Ballpark Village at Wood Corporate Campus, a $1 billion, 240-acre mixed-use development of office, retail, housing and hospitality. The ballpark’s ground-level concourse is being planned to integrate with the surrounding restaurants, offices and a hotel/conference center". "In a twist, the suites will feature freestanding tables, not fixed seats."
January 19, 200817 yr Bringing both teams together will make for a stronger Urban Ohio. ;-) Indians pitching Goodyear as home to players Jessica Coomes, The Arizona Republic Jan. 18, 2008 10:29 AM Reds: The other Ohio team In other baseball news, Cincinnati Reds officials were in the city this week for a tour of Goodyear with Mayor Jim Cavanaugh and Interim City Manager Brian Dalke. Five Reds representatives were in town Wednesday, including Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini and former Chief Operating Officer John Allen, the city confirmed. The Reds are considering moving the club's spring training base from Sarasota, Fla. And Goodyear has been trying to attract a second team to share its soon-to-be-built ballpark with the Indians. Land near the ballpark will be reserved for a second player development complex until February 2009, Dalke said. To read more: http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/0118swv-indians0119.html
January 22, 200817 yr Commission rejects plan BY JOHN FAY | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER January 22, 2008 Sarasota County Commissioners today voted 3-2 in favor of contributing more than $17 million to refurbishing Ed Smith Stadium, but the measure needed four votes to pass. As a result, the Reds' future in Sarasota appears very much in jeopardy, despite one commissioner saying "in my estimation, the door is still open." The county was asked to contribute $17.6 million to a $41.3 million plan to renovate Ed Smith Stadium, which the Reds say is in need of repairs. At least four votes were needed to pass the measure.
January 22, 200817 yr While the stadium looks good, I'd hate for the Reds to move to Arizona. I have no good reasons for this, except that I went to ST in Sarasota once, stayed on Siesta Key, and it was a blast.
January 23, 200817 yr Arizona would be a bad move for the fans, but it seems like Sarasota is making the decision easier. Sarasota is a great location, and it is much easier for fans to make the flight and drive. I would hate for them to make this move so I hope something is worked out. On another note, I can honestly say I am more optimistic about this season than I have been in a long time. I hope the fan support is there early because ownership really showed some committment to winning this year. Things can fall apart quickly with injuries, unexpectedly poor performance by key players etc., but I have a good feeling about this year.

January 25, 200817 yr Youngsters loom large in Reds' future Friday, January 25, 2008 - 3:10 AM By Scott Priestle THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH CINCINNATI -- New Reds manager Dusty Baker shook some hands, posed for a few pictures, then left town to do more of the same throughout the Ohio Valley. He has participated in at least a dozen winter caravans, and he seemed excited for one more. The other half of the Reds caravan, featuring second baseman Brandon Phillips and general manager Wayne Krivsky, was in Columbus last night and this morning. In addition to getting reacquainted with towns he has not seen in decades, Baker will have a chance to get acquainted with the player who could be his center fielder for years to come: Jay Bruce, the top prospect in a top-heavy Reds farm system and one of the most highly regarded prospects in the game. January 26, 200817 yr Nice off-the-field story about the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund helping renovate ballfields in Columbus. Reds try to draw kids into baseball 13 area diamonds being refurbished by big-league team Saturday, January 26, 2008 - 3:13 AM By Mark Ferenchik THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH The day was more suited for swatting pucks than fastballs, but Clayton Hicks was more than happy to welcome a shot of money from the Cincinnati Reds to rebuild four of his Driving Park neighborhood's baseball fields. "We have a lot of kids in the neighborhood who don't have much of anything," said Hicks, an optometrist whose office has been in the neighborhood for 30 years. "It's a boost to our community." The Cincinnati Reds Community Fund, working with the city of Columbus, is spending $50,000 to help renovate 13 ball fields: four at Driving Park, four at Woodward Park on the North Side and five at Westgate Park on the Hilltop. The improvements include clay for the diamonds as well as new benches and signs, said recreation and parks director Alan McKnight. February 7, 200817 yr Reds back in Blanton talks BY PAUL DAUGHERTY & JOHN FAY | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER February 7, 2008 CINCINNATI - The Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers are talking with Oakland about a deal for starting pitcher Joe Blanton. Blanton, who was 14-10 last year and is already signed for this year, has won 42 games in the past 3 years. His current deal is worth $3.8 million. The Reds have talked with Oakland about Blanton before, but were initially turned off by Oakland's high asking price for the pitcher. Wayne Krivsky would not comment Thursday specifically on Blanton. But he did not rule out a trade before camp starts.
February 7, 200817 yr ^ I hope we can land him. One more solid pitcher in our lineup would really move us up in the Central Division. With him and Harang we could really do some damage.
February 8, 200817 yr I was in Wal Mart one day reading some baseball mag and they predicted the Reds to be 5th in the NL Central this year. I cant believe the expectations are really that low! I can see at least a little bit of improvement over last year.

February 8, 200817 yr Report: Reds, A's discuss Blanton Oakland seeking two top prospects in return for right-hander By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com CINCINNATI -- It appears the Reds are still trying to make improvements heading into the final week before Spring Training. Foxsports.com first reported Thursday that the Reds are still interested in acquiring A's starting pitcher Joe Blanton, and the Cincinnati Enquirer reported on Friday that there have been talks with Oakland. A deal did not seem imminent however. According to the Enquirer, which did not cite a source for its story, the A's are seeking a package that could involve at least two top Reds prospects. That might mean first baseman Joey Votto or pitchers Homer Bailey and/or Johnny Cueto. Read more at www.mlb.com
