Veteran Wilson inks Minor League deal

Oufielder/first baseman invited to Spring Training with Reds

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- The Reds clubhouse at Spring Training added one more veteran to the fold with Saturday's signing of outfielder/first baseman Craig Wilson to a Minor League contract.  Wilson's deal comes with an invite to big league camp. He is no stranger to the National League Central, having spent 2001-06 with the Pirates.  The 31-year-old also played with the Yankees in 2006 and spent '07 in the Braves and White Sox organizations.

Wilson has spent the majority of his career playing either first base or right field. The Reds currently have lefty hitters Joey Votto and Scott Hatteberg at first base, but if recent rumors that Votto could be dealt for pitching are true, this latest transaction could be a precursor to another move.

  • It's perfect timing, really. The RNC should invite him to speak at next week's victimfest along with all the other people that have been cancelled faced consequences for their actions.

  • The part that's most annoying to me is he started his apology by saying "if" I offended anyone, which is immediately insincere. I also like that he said "I'm a man of faith" like that is a good thing.

Lofton could reunite with Baker in Cincy

by Ken Rosenthal, MSN/Fox Sports.com

Updated: February 11, 2008, 11:42 AM EST

Kenny Lofton played for Dusty Baker with the Giants in 2002 and the Cubs in '03, both times joining Baker's teams in July and then helping them advance deep into the postseason.  Another reunion could be in the works.  The Reds are considering Lofton, sources say, but the extent of their interest might hinge on which players — if any — they trade for a starting pitcher.

Lofton, who turns 41 on May 31, has played for 11 teams in his 17-year career, including three in the NL Central — the Astros, Pirates and Cubs. A fourth, the Brewers, considered him this off-season before signing free-agent center fielder Mike Cameron.

^I'm up in the air on this one...I just don't know how I feel about signing a guy of this age.

I think they have signed enough old dudes!

anyone have espn insider?

There's a buster olney article talking about the reds being the front runner to get Joe Blanton.

It would be cool if they could somehow get Blanton, but i'd hate to see them trade away most of their prospects!

The Reds have signed Brandon Phillips to a long-term deal.  Something like a 4-year extension...very nice, probably my favorite player on the team.

*Should also be noted that Phillips is the first 2B in MLB history to go 30-30 (home runs, stolen bases).

Good move to resign Phillips.  With the over-the-hill veterans the Reds have been signing, I thought they might try for Chuck Knoblauch!

I have a really good feeling about this year, more than the past few seasons at least.  How did the Reds lose about 70% percent of their games last year, 7th, 8th, 9th innings.  Relief pitching and the lack of the starting pitching being able to go further into the game.  Dusty Baker knows baseball (obviously), a couple of post season appearances,  He knows how to coach.  The Reds starters will stay in longer and the much needed improvement in for the relief will get them over that 7th, 8th, 9th inning hump.  The offense is already there, the defense is there as well.  I am feeling playoffs.

:shoot: Brewers - Astros

The only real competition in the NL Central this year.

I cant wait to see how they do against the Red Sox and Indians. I think it will be a good preview of how well they could do in the playoffs. For anyone that cares, Joe Nuxhall didn't recieve the Ford Frick award for the second straight year.

I'm not sure I agree that the offense is there. It might be god enough to contend in the Central, but it's not a strength. Now, if Bruce and/or Votto can have an impact, and Griff and Dunn have solid years, the offense will be good.

But that's a lot to ask.

^If Bruce and Votto take off I and stay strong throughout the season, I think that the offense will be quite potent.  Griffey is always a threat when he is in the game, and Dunn is consitent throughout the season, you just don't know when during the season he is going to make his impact.  Phillips is always dangerous.  I'm still concerned primarily with the relief pitching.  I feel like that is what cost us a significant amount of games last year, and I don't think we did much regarding it.  I'm concerned we overpaid for Cordero, and I'm quite skeptical of the value of a game closer (at least for one that doesn't have steroids or HGH coursing through his veins).  It seems like an excessive dedication of resources for one inning per game.

Cordero is worth every penny!

I'd like to see an experienced/veteran starter in there. I think this "new light" is credited more to Castellini than Baker.

I also feel good about this year and see us staying in contention throughout the season.

Reds sign veteran starter Fogg

Right-hander agrees to one-year deal worth $1 million

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

SARASOTA, Fla. -- For the Reds' younger rotation candidates, their chances of landing a starting spot just got harder.  Free agent right-hander Josh Fogg signed a one-year, $1 million contract.  The 31-year-old had talked with the Reds off and on throughout the winter before finally reaching a deal.

"It heated up here the last couple of weeks," Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said. "Looking at the board of who was available, we thought he'd be a good fit."  Fogg was able to make the short drive to Sarasota from his home in Tampa and finalize his contract after he passed a physical.

I was listening to Pure Rock 96 this morning, and they have been bashing the Reds all winter about how terrible of a job they are doing with picking up pitchers.  I'm shocked, this off season has been the busiest for the Reds probably within the past 10 years.  Yeah, the pitchers might be old and maybe average, but it gives me hope that at least they are trying to do something.  Maybe playoffs are not in the picture this year (I hope I am wrong), but look what they have done in the past 3 months.  I really applaud Castellini and his efforts of improving the Reds to a winning team, which is something Good Ole' Boy Linder didn't care about.

what the f*** is Pure Rock 96? New radio station?

what the f*** is Pure Rock 96? New radio station?

yeah, it was i think 96 FM Talk, then around Christmas or so it changed to Pure Rock 96, it's like a mix between WEBN and The Sound.

^Cincinnati Radio Stations BTW

For all the Redlegs fans,  Wednesday, first pitch is at 1:15 vs. Philly.  I believe Affeldt is getting the start.  He'll probably go no more than 2 innings or a pitch count of maybe 30.  This is my favorite time of the year.  Baseball is back!!!

I just scored opening day tickets this weekend.  I am pretty pumped because, I am an opening day virgin!    Yee-haw!

I had my first opening day last year...what an experience.  Make sure you get downtown early to watch the parade and soak up true Cincinnati culture!

First day of classes for UC start on Opening Day.  I think I've skipped school or work on Opening Day my whole life and this year will be no different.

We've got 5 tix to the Reds/Yanks game in June in NYC! I'm pumped ... we're sitting in the "Main Championship" section (lame section name, isn't it? ;) )...

Yeah, I know ... this was a huge push for this, because my wife is a huge Yankee fan. She's been one for years. We're going to a Saturday game too, so this should be pretty fun.

Pair of veterans added to camp

Reds sign Patterson, Hairston to Minor League deals

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The battle to be the Reds' starting center fielder took another interesting turn at Spring Training on Monday.  Veteran Corey Patterson was signed to a Minor League contract and invited to camp as a non-roster player.  Another vet, infielder Jerry Hairston Jr., was also signed to a Minor League deal and will be in big league camp.

"We're looking at two talented guys that come in and potentially make our team and make us better," Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said on Monday night. "We'll get them here and see what kind of shape they're in."  Patterson played for the Cubs from 2000-05, including two years under Baker.  He spent the last two seasons with the Orioles.

Cincinnati Reds add 'All You Can Eat' tickets, other amenities

March 25, 2008 | CINCINNATI BUSINESS COURIER

CINCINNATI - Fans of the Cincinnati Reds might want to bring an appetite when they show up for a game this season.  The Reds said Monday that about 400 mezzanine-level seats, along the left-field line in the lower part of the upper deck, will be designated the "All You Can Eat" section this season.  For $30 a ticket, fans can get as many hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and soft drinks as they want.  Those tickets went for $20 per regular game last year and were a few dollars more for higher-demand games.

Among sponsors, Cincinnati Bell is now providing the Reds' dugout phone service, which will involve manager Dusty Baker calling the bullpen on a Nokia wireless phone.  And furniture retailer Ikea will sponsor and furnish a new suite for Reds Radio Network affiliates.

Aaron Harang  Opening Day pitcher.  What do you guys think 20 game winner this year?

Who is all going to the Parade?

I also have standing room only tickets...PM if you are interested (25 bucks)

I'll be present!

What channel is the game on?  I can 't find it anywhere.

Man did anybody catch the game tonight? Edwin busted a 3 run walk off homer after being booed throughout most of the game for playing poorly. Phillips and Patterson also hit homers. Im going to watch Cueto pitch tomorrow if the game doesn't get rained out!

I did - what an abrupt turnaround.  He looked terrible on that at bat until that last pitch, which made the homerun more surprising.  They won again today with Cueto striking out 10 in his first start in the majors - if that is an indication of his skill the Reds have found a pretty solid third starter.

Cueto is BADASS!

^word!!!!

He is indeed

Two wins already in the bottom of the ninth, which is usually a good indicator of how resilient the team is going to be.  Granted, if they have to come from 3-4 down regularly it will not be good, but there are going to be a lot of close games this year.  I like the signs so far - today they were down 3-2 and scored 1 in the eighth to tie and 1 in the ninth to win it.

I like how they are pitching  so far.

Volquez didn't have a bad game today either. 5.1 IP with 8 SO, 2 BB, 5 H and only one run. Griffey hit his first homer of the season to bring his HR count to 594. Hopefully i'll get to see Dunn hit his first homer of the season tomorrow when i go to the game. :)

I went to the game today and actually bumped into Cincinnatus right near the main entrance.  Volquez looked great, but surely does need to experience to help get him through those tough innings.

Decent sized crowd for a Sunday afternoon game - 26,000+

To Hell, with everyone who gave Dusty a hard time because he brought Patterson here.  Veteran or not, there is plenty of play left in this guy.

I have to admit that I had my doubts about Patterson at first, but now I'm thankful Dusty brought him to us. He turned out to be a valuable asset. So far, Bako hasn't turned out to be too bad either.

Yup...Pittsburgh owned us this weekend.

It's amazing how they captured all the fans that were there at the game into one photo without using a fisheye lens! Tell us, how do you think they did it? ;)

11,201 ain't too bad for watching a game between two of the losing-est teams of the decade when it's 40 degrees and cloudy with persistent (and sometimes heavy) rain

I was just kidding with you, but this can't be from today ... It was freezing outside today! Everyone in the photo is wearing tee's?

no... probably from whenever the Pirates last swept the Reds in Pittsburgh... I just googled "Pirates Sweep" and found that enquirer image... looks like the Pirates were having a silly ballcap give-away promotion that day
