Cincinnati certainly knows how to roll out the red carpet for events like this.  Classy production and execution the entire way.

Votto's stress related issues DL trip was apparently depression related.  Sounds like he's been having a difficult time dealing with his father's death from last year.  Hope he can turn this around.  The guy is too talented to be sitting out games.  In the Thursday game against Toronto he looked great "Votto homers, has four hits as Reds beat Blue Jays".

Votto finally opens up about depression

When Albert Pujols comes to bat in the 8th inning with one out and the bases loaded.  And you are leading the game 3-0.  Do you:

A) Pitch to him

B) Walk him (and walk in a run)

If you answered A, you were wrong!  The Reds pitched to Pujols, who hit a grand slam home run to give the Cardinals the lead.  The Cards ended up winning 7-4.  Homer Bailey pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings but gets a ND.

I know one thing , you don't send a pitcher who Pujols  was batting 9 for 17 against him with 3 home runs. What a horrible managing decision.

Worst lose in Reds history. OUCH 22-1

Ouch. That'll leave a mark.

Has the annual slide begun, just a month later.?

Just who the hell do the Reds think they are, the Bengals?

Carson Palmer came up 3 touchdowns shy it seems.

Survey: Reds popularity on the rise

Despite their recent woeful performance, the Cincinnati Reds are the fifteenth most popular Major League Baseball team -- up three spots from last year, according to a poll by Harris Interactive.  The Harris Poll asked 2,100 U.S. adults last month to name their favorite baseball teams.

The New York Yankees were the most popular team followed by the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals.  The Reds ranked fourteenth in 2006, ninth in 2007 and eighteenth in 2008, according to Harris.

GEEZ now they are 9 below .500. This teams always fall apart in the summer. They didn't deserve a new stadium for reasons like now.

You've got to have a kick ass farm system or a major payroll if you want to hang around after the All-Star break.  The Reds have neither.

The Reds just traded Robert Manuel to the Seattle Mariners for Wladimir Balentien. I guess they are hoping his power does some good at GABP even though he's hitting below average this year. Jocketty knows what he is doing I suppose...

I never heard of either.

They brought up Robert Manuel a couple weeks or so ago for his ML debut when Burton first went on the DL. He pitched pretty well but is probably about average when it comes to relievers. I did some research on this Balentien guy and he's quite young (25) and has some power. Unfortunately he only hit around .200 this year for Seattle when they did use him.

We may get Scott Rolen from the Jays.    Edwin E. and Alonso might be gone by the end of the day.

We landed Rolen by trading Edwin, Roenicke, and minor league pitcher Zach Stewart. Hairston was sent to the Yankees for minor league catcher Chase Weems.

I'll take Rolen over Edwin any day of the week.  Although I would have preferred to have Rolen two seasons ago.

The Reds are now tied with the Pirates for last in the Central.  14 games below .500 and 11 games behind the Cardinals.  I agree that Rolen is an upgrade over Edwin but acquiring him and giving up two pitching prospects is going to help Toronto not Cincy.  Rolen might help in 2010 - if you think a 35 year old, often injured third baseman is going to bring Cincy the pennant.

Why couldn't they find this stuff earlier and make decisions then? Always trying to rush someone back.

Well its official that Dusty will be back in 2010. The Reds season is already over in my opinion I think they need to start calling up Stubbs, Frazier, etc.

I found an article on FoxSports.com that sums up my feelings of the Rolen trade.

Jocketty gambling on Rolen in Cincy

By Jon Paul Morosi, FoxSports.com

CINCINNATI - The Reds have dropped to fifth in the National League Central. They are headed for a ninth consecutive losing season, extending their longest streak of futility in the last 50 years.  Typically, such teams strip their roster of veteran talent at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.  Not this one.  Last Friday, they acquired third baseman Scott Rolen — and his $11 million salary for 2010 — from the Toronto Blue Jays.  If you're a Reds fan, there are three reasons to fret about this trade.

1. Jocketty parted with two highly regarded young pitchers, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart, in addition to Encarnacion.

2. The new team leader — the guy with the biggest paycheck and most experience among position players — has an achy left shoulder that required disabled list stays in 2005, 2007 and 2008.  And he played more than 115 games only once in the past four seasons.

3. Jocketty alluded to Rolen's All-Star appearances and Gold Glove awards.  He has five and seven, respectively, tangible signs of a great career.  But none are dated more recently than 2006 — the same year Rolen won a World Series playing for Jocketty's Cardinals.  Because of injuries, Rolen hasn't been the same since.

More Reds news...Weathers traded in a waiver wire deal to the Brewers for the infamous "player to be named later".  So its basically a salary dump.

This trade combined with the Rolen deal is ramping up my frustrations with the state of the Reds - past, present and future.  In most of this decade, the Reds have been stumbling between "trying to win now" and "building for the future".  I know "trying to win now" is popular with the fans.  But unless Cincinnati suddenly becomes a big market team, or at least starts spending like one, "trying to win now" will always fail in modern day baseball.

I've always thought the Reds needed to seriously commit to a "building for the future" strategy.  For smaller market teams, it is the most effective option to fielding a competitive team.  Recent successes are Tampa Bay, Florida and Milwaukee.  Recent failures are Pittsburgh and Oakland.  So "selling today for the future" is no guarantee of success.  But there are hardly any guarantees when you are a smaller market MLB team.

But based on the Reds track record from 2000-2009, I can guarantee this.  If the Reds don't try something different they will continue to scuffle between finishing in 5th place ahead of Pittsburgh and finishing a few games under .500.

That's why I'm frustrated that the Reds are one again failing to seriously pursue a "building for the future" strategy.  To seriously pursue this strategy, the Reds need to really gut the roster of high priced tradeable talent and load up on as many young prospects as possible.  The Reds could trade some or all of the following: Harang, Arroyo, Rhodes, Cordero, Hernandez, Taveras.

This would mean giving up on 2010 and shooting for 2011 and 2012.  This strategy might be painful for the fans in the short term.  But this is the only strategy that offers any hope for a truely competitive Reds team in the future.  Bring up the Louisville talent for 2010 and figure out who's gonna make it in the majors and who won't.  Load up on prospects and groom the team for 2011 and 2012.  I can only hope that the Reds management has the guts to try it.  Because a failure to do so will consign the Reds to a future of mediocrity.

I agree. Harang and Arroyo just cleared waivers today so there's still hope that they will get traded. Texas wants pitching so maybe we can work a deal with them. It doesn't help that a bunch of our starters, both pitching and position, are on the DL. I question the Rolen trade but there's always good backup at AAA! On a good note Burton came back tonight and Dickerson's return is just around the corner. I know they arent going to make a huge impact but its good getting some of our starters back.

^Ahhh ... those are sweet!

My question is, why the hell are they returning to Seattle so soon? The Reds just played there in June 2007! Why couldn't the visit the new Minnesota ballpark? Haven't played there at all during interleague... It'd be nice to see how a small market team manages to constantly win.

The Reds thread is finally clean.  Just in time for tomorrow's final game of the 2009 season.  Just in time to post-mortem 2009 or discuss how much improved the team will be for 2010, right?

Speaking of 2010.  The "2010 Reds Schedule" thread is now merged into this restored thread.

And if anyone wants to complain that cleaning the thread took too long.  It took a LONG time to edit a couple hundred Uncle Rando articles posts!  I didn't mind doing it because I am a Reds fan - but I don't even live in Cincy guys!

Why didn't UncleRando clean his own posts, just as non-moderator members ended up doing?  Just saying.

My approach to cleaning threads hasn't been focused on solely cleaning my own posts.  I've been going through and cleaning entire threads at a time which includes tons of other members' posts along with my own.  I do appreciate that others have been able to help out in this process and clean some of my posts as well.

I've been wanting to go to Redsfest for the past couple years but havent found time to go. Looks like we will pretty much have the same team as last year with a few minor departures like Nix and McDonald.

Hey, the Reds made some off-season news...

Sources: Cuban lefty Chapman OKs deal with Reds

Updated Jan 11, 2010 - 3:44 AM ET

Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman has agreed to a multiyear contract with the Cincinnati Reds, multiple sources said Sunday.  Chapman’s deal will be worth $30 million over five years, one of the sources said, although a Reds official wouldn’t confirm the figure.

Chapman, a hard-throwing 22-year-old, made two starts for Cuba in last year’s World Baseball Classic before defecting.  He then filed for free agency, beginning an intense pursuit by numerous clubs.  The Toronto Blue Jays recently offered Chapman $23 million, but that was not enough.

The Reds have the potential for a pretty mean starting rotation if/when Chapman, Leake, and Wood become ready for the majors. They have also signed free agent SS/2B Orlando Cabrera. Today a trade was announced sending Adam Rosales and Willy Taveras to the Athletics for IF Aaron Miles. Watching Rosales was entertaining but i'm happy to see Taveras go. Hopefully Miles can bounce back from his rut.

Edit: Taveras was designated for assignment by the Athletics right after he was acquired. Guess they didn't really want him either lol.

The 2010 MLB Season starts tonight with a Yanks vs. Red Sox Sunday Night game.  But the real Opening Day starts tomorrow in Cincinnati!!!

I got my Sports Illustrated Baseball Preview issue this week.  SI predicts the Reds to finish third in the NL Central Division with a 79-83 record.  St. Louis is picked to finsh first and Chicago second in the division.  That's higher than I would have expected.  But SI likes the Reds young pitching prospects, the bullpen strength, and some of the position players added.

And if you really want to get optimistic, new ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst Aaron Boone predicts the Reds to win the NL Central!

Personally, I'm taking a "wait and see" approach to 2010.  Maybe nine straight years of losing records is getting to me.

The Reds do have the potential to field a very good team.  On the position player side - Votto and Phillips are great.  Stubbs could be great.  Bruce could be great or terrible.  Cabrera looks like a smart off-season pick up.  Rolen could be a solid pick-up (if he can stay healthy).  On the pitching side - Harang still looks terrible.  Arroyo and Bailey could be great if they can pitch like they did in last season's second half.  Lots of young starting talent in Chapman, Leake, and Wood.  Cordero is solid at closer.  Lots of young lively arms in the bullpen.  Lots of potential.  But potential doesn't always pan out.  Still, there's some hope for 2010.

^ The NYT also expects the Reds to win the NLC. I've been really optimistic for so many years, we'll see what happens. Also, Jocketty has stated that if they're in contention before the All-Star break, they're breaking the bank ... that's good to hear.

They definitely have the talent this year. Hopefully the offense they displayed in the game today will carry on throughout the season. Unfortunately Masset didn't show up with his A game in the 9th otherwise the reds probably wouldve won.

Once again I am ticked that the ballpark did not open to the city instead of the river.  Especially with this new building the view would have been awesome.  I think there was some excuse about FWW somehow creating a bad view, but it seems bogus (unless there is reason the diamond has to face a certain direction).  I am excited about the development around the ballpark, but we missed badly on both of our stadiums' orientation.  Pittsburgh definitely got this right.

The view works both ways. Opening the stadium to the city allows folks to watch the game from their offices.

^ Unless GABP's position were switched with PBS's. Now it's on NKY to make the view cooler.

It seems to me, though, that opening the stadium towards the city could be asking for the ball to be hit into the street with some frequency. Potentially a liability. Maybe I'm off base (bad pun).

[i am not so sure I agree. How many major league ball parks have a view of  a beautiful river with wooded hills?}

Overkill, but I was curious.  All these years I was bitter about the direction the ballpark faced but it makes complete sense now.

I always thought that GABP should have faced Mt. Adams with the Immaculata in center or left field.  That would be consistent with the East or North East preference. and be a much better back drop than Newport.

the stadium is intended to be a haven, a place where fans watch professional baseball, not their surroundings.  25k on the river 81 times a year works for me, regardless of which direction they could or couldn't point the outfield.

I believe you said recently that a basketball arena would be perfect for Broadway Commons. Why would an open-air baseball stadium not care about its views, but a closed basketball arena would be perfect up against Mount Adams?

1. Have you ever watched a baseball game? There is a lot of downtime, during which you could absorb the views.

2. A nice view has a subconscious effect of making you enjoy your experience more, and be more likely to want to come back or report a positive experience to others.

3. (Related to 1 and 2) It would draw good word-of-mouth support. A knock-out view would be talked about nationally... "You've gotta go to a game in Cincinnati! The view outside the park is as good as the game!" (Maybe not exactly like that, but you get the point.)

I agree it's not the most important thing, but it's not irrelevant.
