Thoughts, as time approaches do you guys think we should start a different thread just for the All-Star game?

The Reds are pathetic.  I'm more disappointed that when I check the barometer of the fanbase on forums, fans aren't blaming Bryan Price like they did Dusty, which was from Day 1. 

 

I said for years that Walt Jocketty's roster construction hamstrung Baker (no leadoff hitter until Choo, no protection for Votto, overpaying for bullpen, the Chapman fiasco) and that commentary was generally received as not factual.  People were constantly insisting that the talent was there to win it all.  Now that Price is the manager, all fingers are pointed at Jocketty and those same people that blasted Dusty even after a win aren't saying a peep about how flat the Reds are playing.  They're losing to Arizonas, Colorados and Bostons!  I have to admit, I sense a racial bias and it's sad.

^ I think much of the frustration with Dusty was due to how his teams would collapse in the playoffs.  The fact that he held his job after the SF playoff series where we were up 2-0 and were swept at home to lose, is a miracle I think.  I 100% agree that Jocketty is more to blame for this team's lack of success in recent years, though.  The injuries of Votto and Phillips this year probably help explain why Price hasn't felt the same backlash as Dusty.

People were terrible to Dusty. Before he even landed in Cincinnati people were saying to fire him. I understand the frustration after the SF series, but I still don't agree that he had to be fired after that. After the 1-game play-in game against Pittsburgh last year, it was time to let him go. The last thing we want is to be the Cleveland Browns of baseball and fire our manager (coach) every 4 months. Bryan Price isn't feeling the heat mainly because injuries have sidelined the team the entire season and he's not Dusty Baker.

Reds traded Alfredo Simon to the Tigers for SS Eugenio Suarez and their #1 pick in 2013, A RHP prospect, Jonathan Crawford. I think that's a pretty good move, because I don't think Simon will ever again put up numbers like he did last season.

 

Also, Chris Heisey was let go earlier (another smart move since he was going to be getting more money than he deserved if he stayed).

 

Rumor has it Mat Latos is moving to the Marlins in exchange for Anthony DeSclafani, a right-handed starter, and Chad Wallach, a 23-year-old catching prospect.

Hmmm, interesting on your last note about Mat Latos.  The pitcher must be pretty good, seems like they may be looking for a back up catcher?  I thought their two current catchers were pretty legit.  I wonder what they will do for left field?

Mat Latos was going to cost the Reds a fortune to keep. He also has had his share of injuries, and if he has a season-crippling one next year or in spring training, that would be a huge wasted opportunity to get something out of him. We had to cut a starting pitcher who is eligible for arbitration and Latos was the right candidate. We don't have a huge budget.

 

We definitely need a strong LF player, though. Rumor has it we were going to trade Latos and another player for Cespedes, but they couldn't agree on some details of the trade so the Red Sox sent him to Detroit and then the Reds pulled the trigger on another deal they had waiting for Latos.

 

That Simon deal is great for the Reds. Latos, I'm not sure, but it would be hard to justify keeping him with his salary.

Also, another point of interest is that there is still room in the Reds' budget to pick up a player. Perhaps a free agent in LF? We'll see what happens. This is the first time in 5 years the Reds have made a deal during the Winter Meetings. If we didn't make a deal, people would be whining we didn't make a deal. Since we made a deal, people are whining we made a deal. Reds fans will never be happy and always think everything is the wrong move.

You're probably right about Latos. I just liked him, so it sucks to see him go. I also think the window has closed, and we are in for several years of mediocrity. Let's hope the Bengals and/or Bearcats can pull through with a championship title.

I have no doubts the logic behind this is that Great American Insurance came to the realization that 90% of people probably just thought GABP was a really patriotic name for a ballpark, and had no clue Great American Insurance existed. Changing the color is just an excuse.

Reds debut room for nursing moms

 

When Cincinnati Reds chief operating officer Phil Castellini was told by stadium operations that there was an increased number of women asking where they could nurse their children at the ballpark, as a father of five, he couldn't dismiss the idea of doing the best he could to provide a worthwhile solution.

 

"It just didn't make sense that we would put a couple chairs in the women's bathrooms," Castellini said.

 

The site, built by local home builder Fischer Homes and sponsored by Pampers, which is owned by Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble, will have five gliders that will give the female fan the comfort of home while at the ballpark.

Glad to see Price move on from their traditional lineup of Votto batting 3rd. Will be interesting to see how the new SP's do throughout the season. It's hard for me to get too excited about the Reds especially with how competitive the Central is this year.

On a side note, I wish people would stop the woo-ing.  It got old about the third time I heard it, and now that it is basically nonstop, it makes watching the game painful. The Reds need to start a campaign to end it.

I'm liking the Hamilton Votto 1,2 in lineup.  It'll be interesting to see how the bottom of our rotation does.

Yeah I am with you on that. I don't mind "upscale" food, booze, or lots of beer choices, but seemingly there is noise, video distractions between every pitch and certainly between innings. Baseball is that sport where you were able to chill some, and have conversations with friends or people near you.

The way they pipe in noise it makes it more difficult. Maybe it is better in the outfield seats?

That was the best part about going to Wrigley.  Just a nice, quiet game going on.  So relaxing and the excitement erupts with a big hit or home run.  Sadly, I believe that is changing as well with the huge scoreboard they put in there.  Not sure how loud it will be until I get the chance to go to another game.  Going to games at Great American is fun but, the noise gets annoying.

 

I do think the outfield bleacher seats aren't as loud, but you can feel the heat when there is a strike out from the flame shooter, kind of crazy sitting that far away and you can feel it.

Part of the reasons cites to build an all-new stadium was because the sound system at Riverfront "sucked".  Well what was good about it is that because it sucked they only used it when they needed to.  You had to strain to hear whatever they were telling you, and even that "MMMMMM!" during the nightly hot dog commercial was subtle.  What was great is if you were listening to a game and they came back to the booth while that commercial was running, you would hear the "MMMMM!" go out over the radio. 

 

The sound system at Paul Brown Stadium is similarly under-powered, which makes their bizarre forays into country-metal and Cotton-Eyed Joe a lot more bearable.

Went to Opening Day.  Plenty more games on tap.  I'm hoping that the Reds exceed my expectations.

The new "Bootleggers" Bar along the lower level of the first base line is nice. Some tile mosaic flooring and exterior gives it the impression of an old time bar. It also has liquor.

 

They have craft beer (local and national) as well as domestics there. I saw beer from Braxton and Warped Wing (Dayton) which is pretty cool.

 

I'll get some pictures next time I go.

The season started out so hopeful. Season's definitely not over yet, but they need to pull something together and start winning again.

He said he does not expect to win. What a joke.

The Reds have won two series in Busch Stadium III in the history of the ballpark. 2006 and 2011 are the only two years we beat the Cardinals in a series in St. Louis. Why should Price say he expects to win? That's 9 seasons. 27 Series. And we've won 2.

 

He was being honest. The only way he can say he expects to win is if his team can consistently win in St. Louis. I have no problem with him saying what everyone is thinking. It doesn't mean the Reds can't win or he doesn't want them to win or that they won't work their hardest to win. He's saying he doesn't expect to win the series. And why should he? Blind optimism isn't helpful.

Because his team has proven for the past decade that they can win the division every year and beat any opponent under any circumstances. The Reds haven't been able to prove that. They have lost 25 of 27 series against Cards.

 

The Cardinals haven't had a losing record since 2007. Only 1 losing season in 15 years. They have finished first in the division 8/15 of those seasons. We are not the same team, and they have proven to be the better team year in and year out.

He never said he knows they won't. He doesn't think they can't. He was being honest about expectations. He was likely expecting to win one game. Winning the series would be great, but he wasn't expecting to beat the Cards at home.

Well last nights game was fun. Reds won 16-10. Two grand slams for the Reds (Frazier, Bruce) and one for the Brewers. Five home runs for the Reds in total, including two for Cozart and one for Votto.

This team is hopeless. It has went down hill FAST since the 4th game of the series with the Giants in the playoffs.

The record isn't too awful yet, but consider the fact that half of the Reds wins have come against the Brewers, arguably the worst team in baseball. So far, nearly everything that was a question mark coming into the season has been answered with disappointment and failure. There's a lot of baseball left to be played, hopefully the reds can make a lot of changes along the way.

We've definitely been producing better offensive numbers than last year. Votto is doing great. It's mostly our bullpen that isn't carrying its weight.

There has been a lot of construction activity at the GABP during recent Reds road series. Permanent metal detectors are up at each gate. (I don't recall this being the case at Opening Day) Minor cosmetic fixes in various areas including fixing cracked curbs, painting, power washing, etc. They've replaced the extremely worn banners that had Reds historical facts with boring All-Star / FOX banners.

Metal detectors were installed at the very end of last season. There were definitely metal detectors at Opening Day, but perhaps they installed more permanent ones?

The ones I saw at the 3rd base and left field gates were bolted to the concrete.

The Reds look like s***.  I was looking forward to the series this weekend with the Indians, but I am not as optimistic as I once was.
