February 4, 200619 yr The Reds signed Felipe Lopez to a one-year, $2.7 million contract and avoided arbitration. The only person left to sign is Dunn. He's asking for $8.95 million. The Reds have offered $7.1 million. That's about $35,000 per strikeout.
February 9, 200619 yr Indeed... It's Krivsky on deck New GM emerged as obvious choice for job By Marc Lancaster Post staff reporter Wayne Krivsky's first interview in his second attempt to become general manager of the Reds blew everyone in the room away. "He was totally prepared," Reds CEO Bob Castellini said of that initial meeting Feb. 1 at Great American Ball Park. It wasn't just that the Minnesota Twins' assistant general manager demonstrated an insider's knowledge of the Reds' personnel and put forth a plan to build a winner in Cincinnati, it was the way he presented it all. Krivsky was the first person identified as a candidate to replace Dan O'Brien, and the first from outside the organization to get an interview. He agreed to a two-year contract through the 2007 season with mutual options for 2008 and 2009. Financial terms were not immediately available. February 10, 200619 yr Great hire. I heard Castellini talking about a top priority being a closer. Hopefully he's younger than 37.
February 15, 200619 yr Okay, so the Reds signed Dunn for a two-year, $18M deal that includes a third-year option of $13M. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060214/SPT04/602140384/-1/rss03 Oh, and they signed Scott Hatteburg and Tuffy Rhodes, raising the average age of the team to something similar to a Wednesday night beer league softball team.
February 15, 200619 yr ^Depends on the beer... Though it's nice to see they weren't afraid to lay out the cash for Dunn...and Marc Lancaster pointed out: Was not able to get in touch with Adam tonight, but I did speak with his agent, Greg Genske, a little earlier. He provided one detail in particular that you'll probably find interesting: The 2008 club option is voided if Dunn gets traded. "Adam was willing to commit one of those free-agent years to the Reds, and not to any other team," said Genske. In addition, Genske said that $13 million option actually could grow to $16 million with incentives. He was at dinner and didn't have the specifics on hand, but said they were award-based. That usually means bonuses for winning an MVP and/or making the All-Star Game. From what Genske said, it sounds like Krivsky made getting a deal done before arbitration a top priority. "Wayne reached out as soon as he accepted the job to become general manager," said Genske. "We realized we had a lot of work to do in a short period of time if we were going to reach an agreement and avoid the arbitration hearing, which always is the goal.
February 17, 200619 yr Hopefully cash won't be an issue, if the Dunn signing is any indication. Oh, I forgot to mention that they signed Quenton McCracken. So we've got him, Hatteburg, Rhodes and Womack. Yep, quite a bench.... ;)
February 17, 200619 yr Hey guys, I was on the Reds Message board at ESPN.com and replied to BLee2525's post. He asks how he can hear the Reds on the radio when he lives in Washington DC. He has XM Radio in his car but it is subscription based and not always guaranteed to get the Reds announcers. The board turned it into an XM vs. Sirius debate, but I think that skirts the topic and avoided the answer he was looking for. I have XM radio in my car as well, but I recently discovered that I can get 700 AM on a portable radio. I lent my experience, which I would like you guys to offer me your advice and opinions as well. I trust the posters on this board more than ESPN's group of hacks. GatewayPizza (that's me) wrote: Let me try to answer the question rather than add fluff to the XM vs. Sirius controversy. Sirius is not an issue here as they do not have MLB Radio and neither does BLee have Sirius. What BLee is trying to say is 1) I live in DC, out of the Cincinnati radio market (WLW 700 AM), and 2) since I already have MLB Radio on XM in my car, do I want to continue paying for the subscription just to hear Reds games? I am in the same boat, just a different river. I live in St. Louis and on my car radio I have XM for one more month and after the trial period I think my promotional offer is $9.99/month per year. I also faintly get WLW 700 AM on the same car radio. I have been listening to MLB Radio on XM 175 during the offseason on the drive home from work because I like hearing Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy. They have exclusive rights to interview players and such, and when the season resumes, you will hear the games broadcast on XM channels 176-189. They also will air all World Baseball Classic games in March. I also heard the last month of the 2005 season on XM. All MLB games are broadcast from their official radio announcers, but you are not guaranteed to hear either the home or away team's voices. For Reds games, you may or may not get Marty and Joe/Steve every night. For one, I did not like hearing the Pirates announcers do a Reds game. I am debating whether or not to continue my XM subscription at $9.99/month just for the Reds games. My second radio, which I just got this week, was a Sony ICF-36 Portable AM/FM/TV/Weather Radio. This cost me only $25 at Target (also at Radio Shack and Amazon.com). The benefit of a portable radio is you can take it with you - out of the car, in the house, around the campfire, etc., and it comes with a headphone jack. I read the reviews and others in the Midwest say they pick up far away AM stations, which is encouraging news. I tried to get 700 AM this week and most of the time I got it with little static and the times I couldn't get it was perhaps due to weather or other over-the-air interference. If someone could speak more to why 700 AM signal is stronger or weaker at times, this would help me out. Other portable radios are more expensive: 1) GE 7-2887 Superadio III Portable AM/FM Radio at ~$50 and 2) C Crane CCRadio Plus Multiband Portable AM/FM/Weather/TV Band Radio at ~$145. I read comparison reviews on Amazon and ccradio.com. You can get these radios at either Radio Shack or Amazon. I was going to ask my local Radio Shack if they can give me any more advice about these radios. Obviously, there are reasons one radio costs more than the other, such as digital tuning and sound, but what it all boiled down to for me was "Does this radio get me 700 AM?" The Sony ICF-36 did and for only a $25 risk. Plus it's smaller and weighs only a pound, so you can really take it with you. The Sony folks say their antenna is sensitive, but I couldn't find a direct comparison of antenna strength between the Sony, the GE and the CCRadio. Hey, at least I know I will always get Marty and Joe. The proof of its worth will be during the season, if WLW has a strong signal throughout the summer. I believe you should get WLW 700 AM from an AM Radio with a sensitive antenna from the DC area. You just have to do the research. I would like to know what you find out. My third option would be to stream Reds games, either on MLB.com for audio or MLB.TV for audio/video or take my chances with WKKI in Celina and WATH in Athens. I tried those radio stations online and they didn't work for me. Can someone else verify this? FYI, WLW 700 AM has free streaming radio on its website 24/7 except for Reds games, which is restricted from streaming audio by MLB. I figure this will be an experimental year for me as I try to find the best way to get my Reds games from where I live. This is also an experimental year for the Reds, so I might not miss much if I fail to hear a game. But they will get better soon and I want to be ready. BLee, let me know how it goes for you. P.S. - I had previously relegated to relying on ESPN to show Reds highlights, but since the Reds moved from Boston and dropped the Sox from their name, they don't get on SportsCenter anymore [backstab]. I could TiVo Baseball Tonight on any given night and the Reds could even miss the highlights in the entire hour. I know part of this is due to their on-field performance. The other option is to subscribe to the MLB Extra Innings package on DirecTV, but it is not worth it for me right now.
February 17, 200619 yr Unless there is a station already using the 700 KHz in Washington to cause interference, any type of radio should pick up WLW in the District.
February 17, 200619 yr In my area (St. Louis) there is a Gospel station on 690 AM. Is that why 700 doesn't always come in that clear? Damn Gospel Hour!
February 17, 200619 yr The best time to get WLW is at night, the signal bounces off the ionosphere (sp) and back down. For some reason its stronger at night than during the day. I heard a rumor once that said WLW actually ups their signal at night, but I don't know if that is true. I do know that I've been able to get the signal in Des Moines, Iowa and in the Flordia panhandle as well as DC on my car sterio and on a little portable at night. It's more hit and miss during the day.
February 17, 200619 yr  Hooray for the ionosphere! Source: http://apollo.lsc.vsc.edu/classes/met130/notes/chapter1/ion2.html The Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation The ionosphere is important for radio wave (AM only) propagation.... ionosphere is composed of the D, E, and F layers the D layer is good at absorbing AM radio waves D layer dissapears at night.... the E and F layers bounce the waves back to the earth this explains why radio stations adjust their power output at sunset and sunrise
February 17, 200619 yr I don't know about XM or Sirius... but, I used MLB.tv & there is MLB.radio for out-of-towners... the cost isn't that bad either...
March 2, 200619 yr ^ WLW 700 AM is on XM Channel 173. It's a few seconds behind the actual AM feed, but for where I'm at in St. Louis, it's just what I need to drown out the Cardinals hype . Next up on the dial is MLB Radio on XM 175 and during the MLB season all baseball games will be broadcast on XM 176-189. This brings up an interesting point. How will Reds games be broadcast on XM? Will WLW on XM 173 carry Reds games or will it be treated like streaming WLW radio online, where they don't have exclusive MLB rights to stream Reds games? I hope WLW keeps the Reds games so I can hear them on 2 XM channels. Whatever happens I'll be ready since I have XM for the whole year. The only issue I have with MLB games on XM is when you get either the home or the away team's broadcasters for the Reds or any team for that matter. But with WLW on XM, I think it's a sure bet that I'll get Marty and Joe/Steve all the time.
March 2, 200619 yr I like listening to MLB Radio on XM 175 but they never cover the Reds, even with Rob Dibble on the air. It's nice that the Reds can get national exposure on their own station the same way TBS did for the Braves and WGN for the Cubs on cable TV. It'll also be interesting to see if other teams will follow suit. I know the Cardinals and Indians are jumping into exclusive radio station ownership, with the Cards moving to KTRS 550 AM from the more-powerful KMOX 1120 AM. How did WLW swing this deal with XM? I think it's a brilliant move!
March 2, 200619 yr More info on WLW on XM: Here's a blog that best explains why WLW on XM will not air Reds games... If you’re trying to decide between XM or Sirius satellite radio, here’s something to consider. WLW-AM will be added to the XM satellite radio lineup on Wednesday, March 1, on Channel 173. The entire day – except for Reds and Bengals games – will be heard across North America on XM. (Major League Baseball has a separate deal with XM; the NFL has an exclusive deal with Sirius.) Alternative programming (taped or some live call-in shows) will air during Reds and Bengals games. So this means Gary Burbank, Mike McConnell will be heard from coast to coast. And Cunningham and Furman? Is this a good idea? At least WLW-AM will truly be “the nation’s station” again – as it was in 1934-39 when it broadcast experimentally on 500,000 watts. Source: http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/tv/2006/02/big-one-on-xm.asp This is still why I will invest my money ($150) in a Mini CC Radio, due out in May 2006. This is reportedly better in every aspect of the CC Radio Plus. I want to be able to hear Reds games wherever I'm at, so this is what works for me: http://www.ccrane.com/miniccradio/index.aspx
March 2, 200619 yr ^ That's what I told my wife when I came home from work (I was listening intently to the Reds Hot Stove Report on WLW on XM). She was wondering why I was so giddy, I said I got some great news. And then I sang that little ditty, "The Reds are on the ra-di-o!!!" And she was like, oh, I can top that... I'm pregnant! LOL
March 3, 200619 yr Hard to tell which is worse - that or "we're talkin' baseball...talkin' Tribe! (Nobody plays harder than the Tribe!)"
March 3, 200619 yr DaytonBorn, we just need to get you back to the Cincinnati/Dayton area and then you would be able to watch & listen to your Reds for free.
March 20, 200619 yr I don't know ... I have mixed emotions on this trade. We do need pitching though if we are going to be a contender. Goodbye, Pena. Hello, Arroyo
March 21, 200619 yr It may turn out to be a decent trade. Pena was a very one-dimensional player and is more suited to be a DH. Besides, outfielders with power are a dime a dozen these days. Arroyo at least will give them innings. Last year we had way too many games where they had to go to the bullpen in the 5th inning. And, sadly, a 4.51 ERA these days is pretty good. Still, I believe that the Reds have a last-place pitching staff.
March 21, 200619 yr Yeah, I have a hard time thinking we could have gotten that much more for a power hitting outfielder who strikes out...Arroyo may not be an ace, but a guy who eats innings and keeps us in games, while getting Dunn out of the infield - seems like a good idea to me. I'd love to have gotten more for Pena, but honestly, who out there is saying, "the key to our team is a power-hitting outfielder who strikes out...let's trade our starting pitching for that."
March 21, 200619 yr Still, I believe that the Reds have a last-place pitching staff. The Reds pitching staff isnt a great one by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldnt go as far to say that it is a last place pitching staff. Last year the starters seemed to struggle more with injury rather than talent (Harang, Ortiz, Wilson). Should their starters remain healthy, this year, combined with the addition of Arroyo I believe you will see a nice improvement over last year. Middle/Small market teams, like the Reds, can never afford the injury bug to come their way because it will doom their season.
March 22, 200619 yr Yeah, Dunn back to the outfield and Hatteburg at 1B is a good thing. Encarnacion's smoking the ball, so hopefully he'll put it all together this season. I have no doubts the Reds will score a lot of runs. UncleRando, I may have gone a bit overboard but I'm still not terribly sold on this pitching staff. I do like Harang and I think Claussen will end up being very good. Milton and Wilson...ehh...we'll see. Williams...well, we'll see too. The bullpen is pretty old. Who will end up being the closer? Will Wagner step up? Coffey? God forbid they use David Fucking Weathers again, or a "bullpen by committee" (code for "our bullpen sucks") And the president is going to throw out the first pitch Opening Day. That ought to fuck things up nicely.
March 22, 200619 yr I'm going miss saying "Willy MO" and I loved his homers, but you got to have pitching. I'm not sold at all on Hatteburg. The guy is 37 and spent most of his time DHing and first base in the Junior Circuit. He doesn't even hit with much power. He isn't a long-term solution for first base. I would think Dunn could of been decent at first, if given the chance.
March 22, 200619 yr I get the impression that Hatteburg is just a guy they picked up who's a decent hitter and will hold a roster spot for a year or two. It's a one-year contract after all. I agree, though, I don't see why he was necessary. His skills are clearly diminshing.
March 23, 200619 yr Is anyone going to the opening day game? I wish. I'll check out the parade, though.
March 23, 200619 yr Yeah I usually am not lucky enough to have tickets, but I always attend the parade and festivities downtown.
March 23, 200619 yr If anyone wants to go to the game maybe we can buy STO tickets at a cheaper price and go? What do you guys think about that?
April 8, 200619 yr Man, watching the last couple of days, it's gonna be a long summer. We're 4-1, but the bullpen just cannot put out a fire, and worse yet, it starts plenty of them...go Reds, but I am concerned...
April 8, 200619 yr It might get better when Jason get's back. He calls better games. The bullpin does look aweful though.
April 12, 200619 yr Wow! How about those Reds! So far the Bronson Arroyo trade seems to be paying off on our end.
April 16, 200619 yr Dunn really needs to get his act together in left. He's been screwing up atleast one play a game.
April 17, 200619 yr We spent one day in sole possession of 1st place, then a little two-game back-to-reality from the Cardinals...it's been a lot of fun so far - if the Reds can be better than .500 most of the season, and within striking distance come August, it's gonna be a wonderful summer...
April 17, 200619 yr WTF why, why, WHY pitch to Albert Pujols after, after, AFTER already hitting 2 homeruns in the same game??????????? I think who ever is not letting them score keep them in. Screw a closer, because we don't have any.
April 22, 200619 yr Okay, here is a question for you Reds fans ... If you had to pick the infield, who would you pick? We have what, 2 or 3 new infielders and a couple look like they may have some potential ... so, what's your pick?
April 22, 200619 yr Brutal. How can a manager just keep a pitcher in after giving up 5 runs needless to say 9 in 3 inning. Not even counting all the homeruns that was hit in the 4th inning with no one out. lol amazing. 4 home given up by one pitcher in one inning, amazing. This staff will prevent us from having a winning season.
April 24, 200619 yr Okay, here is a question for you Reds fans ... If you had to pick the infield, who would you pick? We have what, 2 or 3 new infielders and a couple look like they may have some potential ... so, what's your pick? I would go with this right now edwin encarnacion 3rd felipe lopez ss brandon phillips 2nd aurilia 1st I'm think phillips is going to be great, I'm a bit of an Indians fan also (Grew up around Cleveland) and Phillips was the number one prospect that the Indians traded bartolo colon to the expos
