The Health Department said nothing would probably come of the situation and that further action was unlikely. They understand what was going on. There are always some annoying nitpicky people out there, unfortunately.

Not to shoot the messenger, but I think that's a double-standard and a BS response--especially when the law was ridiculous to begin with.

Amen - I would like to find out who the d-bags were that would even complain.  The celebration was pretty standard.  Some people really need to get a life - interlopers are ridiculous.  Of more concern to me is the fact that the Reds did not put away the Brewers when they had multiple opportunities.  I officially declare that the Reds should always take Gomes down in a situation where you absolutely need to move a runner over, or at least put the ball in play.  Unless somebody quickly enlightens him to the term "shorten your swing".

The Reds just wrapped up the regular season with a 91-71 record so I thought I would give myself a little credit.  There are definitely some parallels with 1990 - regardless of what happens I am pretty excited to see some playoff baseball in Cincinnati.

With an eye on 91-71 - that will win the division this year, just like 90.

You should've bet money on that!

Good news for Dusty Baker and his coaching staff.  Two-year extensions for everyone.

I thought about it because I had mentioned this to friends.  I also have a good feeling about the playoffs but do not want to jinx anything at this point so we'll see.  Great news for Dusty Baker today, and it was nice to see people turn out for the Reds rally prior to heading to Philly.

This is ugly. Phillies up 4-0, middle of the third.

The Indians will be better than the Reds next year.  I guarantee it!

Relax, I'm joking. :)

^Then why say it and infringe on legit talk about the Reds?  Let them have their thread.

Volquez obviously was not ready to pitch - he was tantalizingly close to getting out of the second with no runs, but fell apart with 2 outs giving up 3 more.  The way Halladay is pitching the Phillies might only need 1 run though - he is ridiculous right now.

Lighten up, if the Reds get to the postseason they will do well.

Getting no hit is not doing well.

I don't think any team was going to hit him tonight...bad start indeed.

The Reds almost have no margin for error now with the guarantee of seeing Halladay again later in the series (if it gets that far).

Also, where was Chapman?  Tonight would have been a good chance to get his feet wet!

^ Why waste him on a night where they forgot the bats on the plane?

^Then why say it and infringe on legit talk about the Reds? Let them have their thread.

Because it was a carry-over joke from the Bengals thread.  Just trying to lighten things up around here.  It seems like it's been awfully tense around here lately, especially in the sports threads.

Anyway, go Reds.  I will be rooting for the only good MLB team in Ohio in the playoffs to overcome the no-no tonight and pull off this series.

Take away all the hype and the reality is the Reds lost game 1 on the road against the likely NL Cy Young award winner...big deal.  Even if you go home down 0-2, series really don't turn until the home team loses a game...and the Reds have a shot at doing that tomorrow before they even get a home game.

Arroyo has lots of playoff experience; I wouldn't be surprised if he matched Hamels.  Going home 1-1 is advantage Reds, with or without a no-hitter.

This is why I am not in favor of 5 game series.  One dominant pitcher can essentially win it for his team.

The Reds probably have to win the next two games, although the next time they see Halladay it will be in Cincy.

Anyway, I was impressed with the Philly fans not throwing up on any little girls last night.  That's a big step up for them.

Its all downhill from here on out for Philly.

I'm glad to see some optimism here! Yes, it sucked the Reds got shut out, and were the victim of a no hitter.  Not the end of the world though, and it's not like they dropped a home game, or blew a lead.  They flat out got beat by the best pitcher in baseball, and now it's on to game 2.  I will say though, the way the Phillies played yesterday, I'm confident they would have destroyed any team in baseball.  Win or lose, it's just nice to still be caring about baseball in October.  Go Reds!

^ Why waste him on a night where they forgot the bats on the plane?

Because they have a two day layoff between games 1 and 2, and he usually only pitches one inning.  I don't know, I just thought they may have used him last night.

This is why I am not in favor of 5 game series. One dominant pitcher can essentially win it for his team.

I actually think MLB's playoff series are way too short.  I'd like to see at least a best-of-nine, optimally a best-of-eleven.  Also, I don't think any more than four teams should make the postseason.  These changes would better determine a "true" champion for the game, but they'd be very fan unfriendly.  Oh well...

That's the attitude the Reds need to have for today's game.  If Arroyo can give the Reds a solid start and if the Reds hitters can get to Oswalt for some early runs, then Halladay's no-hitter can be put in the past.

lol wow

I never seen a town do so badly in playoffs.

If Arroyo can give the Reds a solid start and if the Reds hitters can get to Oswalt for some early runs, then Halladay's no-hitter can be put in the past.

...and the Reds don't have four errors and hit three batters

Wow - I have been off on my expectations for a multitude of reasons.  As much as I loved Jose Rijo's performance in 90, I absolutely have hated Baker's decisions to this point.  It's easy to look forward to next year, but having seen championships I realize how rare they are.  Go Reds.

Baker's decisions?  Halladay threw a no hitter in game 1 and Rolen, Bruce, and Phillips in the matter of 2 AB's sunk the ship in game 2 by failing to make routine plays.  NL leading offense (in run production) doesn't show up in game 1 and NL leading defense (fewest errors) fails to show up on game 2.  Baker had nothing to do with it.

Volquez should have never started game 1, for example.  Without going into details that decision alone set the ball in motion to where we are now.  Obviously the Reds' players fumbled last night's game away, but it still does not mean the right decisions were made by the manager.

Well, the Phillies just made it official.  Hamels didn't no-hit the Reds like Halladay.  But his complete game win was nearly as dominant.  Looks like the Reds missed their opportunity in Game 2 to make a dent in the Phillies momentum.

Great season for the Reds.  Tip of the cap to the Phillies.  Looking forward to 2011.

Why a fan wouldn't help the Reds player rob a homerun away from Utly is FAR beyond me.  Typical i guess.

While I am bummed by the Reds performance in the playoffs, I am thankful for a great season this year.  Game 2 with all of the what if's is the thing that will bother me for a long time.  Hopefully the Reds can build on this season.  How about a number 1 starter in the offseason?

BTW - when I was watching Utley's homerun I was screaming for the fans to back off.  I was actually thinking if I had been there I would have yanked the idiots away from the ball - at least in my imagination.

From the Baseball Writers’ Association of America website:

2010 NL MVP: Reds’ Joey Votto Runs Away With Award

Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto, who helped the Reds win the National League Central title for their first post-season berth in 15 years, was an overwhelming choice as the NL Most Valuable Player in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Of the 32 ballots submitted by two writers from each league city, Votto was listed first on 31 and second on the other to score 443 points, based on the tabulation system that rewards 14 points for first place, nine for second, eight for third and on down to one for 10th.

Votto, 27, finished in the top three in all the Triple Crown categories with a .324 batting average (second), 37 home runs (third) and 113 runs batted in (third) and led the league in on-base percentage (.424), slugging (.600) and OPS (1.024).

Yes! Very deserving of it!

Nice to have some good news in the Cincinnati sports world, since the Bengals aren't providing any.

WAY2GO VOTTO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Votto!  Almost a clean sweep on the voting - as Bruce and Stubbs mature as hitters this offense should have a good nucleus for a few years.

I'm anxious to see how much he makes in arbitration this winter.

ESPN: Reds' Joey Votto signs contract

Baseball notebook: Reds' Votto agrees to three-year deal

Monday, January 17, 2011

From wire reports

There's no question that avoiding arbitration for the next three years is a good thing for first baseman Joey Votto and the Cincinnati Reds.  Arbitration can be an acrimonious process.  It opens wounds in a player's relationship with a club that don't heal.  The Reds and Votto avoided that yesterday when he agreed to a three-year, $38 million contract.

But the contract simply buys out Votto's arbitration years.  In other words, he can take his money and run to free agency after the 2013 season.  Usually when players sign deals that buy out the arbitration years, the club will add a year or two that keeps the player from leaving via free agency.

The Reds can't comment on the deal until it's official.  It won't be official until Votto comes to Cincinnati and passes a physical.  The guess is that Votto wanted to limit the deal to three years.  He was reluctant to commit to a long-term deal when he was asked about it at Redsfest in December.

That's puzzling. Well done for the Reds to avoid any possibility for arbitration over the next few years, but it seems an awfully steep price to not hurt Joey's feelings while not getting any years beyond those they control already. Were they to go through three years of arbitration, I doubt they would have paid more than $10M/year each time.

Baseball notebook: Reds sign Cueto to four-year deal

Thursday, January 27, 2011 - 2:55 AM

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Cincinnati Reds continued to lock up their talented group of core players, signing pitcher Johnny Cueto to a four-year, $27 million contract yesterday.  The right-handed starter flew into town, took a physical and completed the deal, which avoided arbitration.  It's the latest move in an offseason spending spree by the defending National League Central champions.  The Reds have committed more than $150 million to four players: Cueto, right-hander Bronson Arroyo, outfielder Jay Bruce and first baseman Joey Votto, the NL MVP.

The Reds have kept most of their roster intact to try to make another postseason run.  First, they exercised an $11.5 million option on Arroyo, their most accomplished starter, and added two years for $23.5 million.  Bruce got a six-year, $51 million deal and Votto avoided arbitration with a three-year deal for $38 million.

Right-hander Edinson Volquez is the only Reds player still in arbitration.  Volquez asked for $2 million and the Reds offered $1.3 million.  General manager Walt Jocketty said the club has offered Volquez both a one-year deal and a multiyear contract.

Awesome walk-off.Im gald that happen. It's going to be a rough start to the season with the starter hurting.

I enjoyed the parade and the game today, although we left at the top of the 8th inning. I thought surely there would be no hope for the Reds in that game after opening with two quick homeruns and giving up 4 runs in 2 innings. I guess the Reds 'like' playing from behind, just like the Bengals.

2-0. The Reds drew 38k today on a final four evening.

2-0. The Reds drew 38k today on a final four evening.

That is impressive, hope Cincinnati keeps it up.

So far so good for the Reds.  Down 4-0 after 1, they go on to win 12-4 with a 5-0 record.

Wow i can't believe the Pirates are going ot take 3 of 4 from the Reds at home. What happened to the  starting pitching? I know the bullpen needs rest badly.

How about the Reds now? 23-17, first place in the NL Central, and a sweep of the Cards for the first time since September 2007! That last game was really close though....
