May 18, 201114 yr ^ He's on the DL with shoulder inflammation now. The Reds followed their weekend sweep of the Cardinals with a two-game sweep of the Cubs. The Cubs looked awful yesterday committing four errors. The worst when Kerry Wood literally threw the game away in the 8th with a wild throw to third on a sac bunt that allowed two runs tying the game. The bunter reached third on the play and scored the game-winning run on a sac fly. More on that game from ESPN: • The Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 7-5, but did it in unusual fashion. The Reds scored their first five runs without recording an RBI, the result of three Cubs errors. The Reds ended the game with just two RBI, the first time a team has scored seven or more runs with two or fewer RBI in the past 25 seasons, and just the third time in the past 50 years. • In defeat, the Cubs allowed seven runs, all of which were unearned runs.

The Indians got the first game, but it could have been a different story; half the umps in MLB would have called whoever this Carrera guy is out on that RBI bunt.
May 21, 201114 yr In regard to that rule there is the base running box line that runs down the right field foul line for the last 45' to first base. The way I've had it explained to me in the past is that as long as the base runner is touching (has part of their body above the line determined by the 1st base umpire) they are considered to still be within the running envelope. If you take a look at the slow motion backstop view in the back half of this linked video you can clearly see that Carrera wasn't as far off the line as he appeared to be from the press box view. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=15010067

Here's the entire rule 7.08(a)(1)... 7.08 Any runner is out when -- (a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runners baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely; The baseline is established in relation to where the baserunner was already at when the tag attempt was made. You can see in the replay he is running slightly outside of the first baseline and he goes slightly outside of the line 3 feet to the right of the baseline. I don't think he moved more than 3 feet laterally to avoid the tag, but it was definitely close and could be debatable. The real question is why was the first baseman not ready for the bunt? What do you think a speedy left handed minor leaguer without a major league at bat is brought in for in that situation? Instead, he was worried about holding Santana (a catcher and not representing the go ahead run) on first base.

Not a good look! Patience, everyone. The Reds were 25-19 on May 24, 2010 before a win over Pittsburgh that night. This morning, the team is 25-23. If just two games, such as the blown lead vs. Cleveland on May 21, went in the Reds favor, the club would be 27-21, six games over .500, just as they were one year to the day. Our pitching is straightening itself out with Bailey and Cueto, and by September one of them will have distinguished himself as a front-of-the-rotation guy, the other will be a bonafide #2. The Reds are built for the long haul.

That has to suck playing a "double header" like that. The Phillies don't even have anymore pitchers left in the lineup.

June 16, 201113 yr The Reds just finished a surprisingly productive seven game west coast road trip. They split a four game series at San Fran. Then they swept three games at LA. The Reds are now 37-33. Not as good as last year right? So what was the Reds record last year after 70 games. After looking it up, one finds that the Reds record after 70 games in 2010 was . . . 37-33. The weight of expectation certainly changes perception doesn't it? Now, to be fair, at this point last year the Reds began a five game winning streak and won 12 of their next 16 games. Will the 2011 Reds start a similar winning streak? Who knows. But consider this about the 2011 Reds season thus far: The Hitting Has Been Good: Team Batting Avg is 3rd in the NL; OBP is 2nd; OPS is 3rd; 1st in runs; 4th in HR's; 1st in RBI's But The Pitching Has Been Bad: Team ERA in 14th out of 16 NL teams; and they've given up the 2nd most walks and the 3rd most runs in the NL The Starting Pitching Especially: Of the six main starting pitchers used so far only Cueto (1.68 ERA) and Bailey (3.00 ERA) have been consistently effective. But Cueto's only had 8 starts after starting the season on the DL. And Bailey's only had 5 starts and is currently on the DL. The other main starters have been more ineffective with more starts. Leake has 10 starts and a 4.06 ERA. Wood has 15 starts and a 5.11 ERA (including today's win). Arroyo has 14 starts and a 5.23 ERA. Volquez has 12 starts and a 5.48 ERA. So you could argue that if the starting rotation pitches better, then the Reds can do much better than four games over .500 - if their hitting stays good. Of course, if the starting rotation doesn't pitch better, then they likely won't catch the Cards and the Brewers. The Reds now start a 15 game interleague stretch. They begin at home on Friday against Toronto. Then the Reds host the Yankees for three games starting Monday. After that the Reds travel to Baltimore and Tampa Bay. This interleague stretch ends when they return home to host the Indians on Independence Day Weekend. Then NL play resumes on July 4th against the Cards.
June 20, 201113 yr The Reds hitting and pitching both had reversals of fortune over the weekend. The pitching got better but the hitting got worse against the Blue Jays. It added up to dropping two of three games. But they didn't lose ground to the Brewers and the Cardinals. The Brewers dropped two of three against the red-hot Red Sox. The Cardinals did win two of three against the not-so-red-hot Royals. But in winning Sunday's game, the Cards ended up losing Albert Pujols in a scary looking collision with a runner at the first base line. He got a fractured forearm and will be out 4-6 weeks. The Reds are now two games behind both Milwaukee and St. Louis going into the three game series against the Yankees.

June 23, 201113 yr After Tuesday's unwise game cancellation forced a rare day-night doubleheader yesterday, the Reds dropped the day game but won the night game to prevent being swept by the Yanks. The Reds scored more runs in the win (10) then they did in the past five interleague games (9). Despite dropping four of the last six interleague games, the Reds are still only 2 games behind first place Milwaukee and 1 1/2 games behind second place St. Louis. While the Reds tread water with a 5-5 record in their last 10 games, Milwaukee has dropped 7 of their last 10 games and St. Louis has dropped 8 of their last 10 games.

The offense will score some runs but it does not do it effectively each and every game -not to mention they have not been doing well in closer games lately. Instead of going on a winning streak, the 2011 Reds seem stuck in neutral. They've gone 1 of 3 in the last three series. They're now 4 games behind division leader Milwaukee. And the schedule is not getting easier. Three games at TB starting tonight. Three back at home against Cleveland. Then two series against teams ahead of the Reds in the Central - three at STL and four at MIL.

So of course we know what's going to happen, right? They win two out of three games - and come within one walk-off homer of sweeping the series. Baseball's a funny game isn't it? The Reds close out this interleague stretch with a home weekend series against the Tribe.

July 4, 201113 yr The Reds hitting is crashing as badly as Fausto Carmona running to first. :wink: They showed Carmona running (falling!) to first probably 10 times, but not one commentator mentioned that he NEVER touched 1st base, and the Reds never threw over there. Also, late in Saturdays game, Stubbs was running to 2nd on a foul ball, started walking back to first, saw that the Indians were not going to hold him on, so he stopped walking. The camera shifted to the pitcher, and on the next play, Stubbs was moving again. Never appeared to retouch first. Anyone else catch that?
July 4, 201113 yr Carmona missed first and it may have been a problem if the play at second hadn't been controversial. Fausto did eventually get up and touch the base, but had the Reds thrown over right away, they would have had a great shot at getting there before he did.

At 43-42, the Reds are still only 2 games behind the Brewers and the Cardinals. (They're also 1/2 game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates!) So the Reds are certainly in the Central Division pennant race. But this week could be the week that keeps them in that race - or knocks them out of it. Three games at St. Louis. Followed by four at Milwaukee. Then the All-Star break.

Then they blow an eight run lead in last night's game before salvaging a 9-8 win. The Reds are now 3 games behind division leader St. Louis. They are 2 behind Milwaukee (and 1.5 behind Pittsburgh!) going into their four game series. The Brewers have a 30-13 home record this year. Yikes!

July 29, 201113 yr Winning eight in a row is probably what the Reds need now. Losing four in a row to the Mets is what the Reds got instead. They're now at a season low 5 games under .500 and 6 1/2 out of first. After being a .500 team for most of the year (41-40 - April thru June), their 8-15 July record put them in a big hole. Reds finish out July this weekend at home against the Giants. Then go on the road against Houston and the Cubs next week.
July 31, 201113 yr I don't know what voodoo the Reds have against the Giants but I wish they had it against the rest of the NL. After this three game sweep the Reds at least preserved some hope of trying to get back in the central race. With STL and MIL facing each other and the Reds facing the dregs of the central - if the Cincy can't make up ground next week, they won't have much hope left. BTW, Cueto's complete game shutout gave him enough IP's to put him first in the NL in ERA.
August 4, 201113 yr Dontrelle Willis turned out to be great pickup for the Reds this year. Willis got plugged into the shaky starting rotation in July and has done well. Five starts - 17 K's vs 11 walks - respectable 3.41 ERA. Unfortunately for Willis, he's also been the hardest luck pitcher for the Reds with three blown saves in his five starts. None more than last night at Houston. Willis gave up 2 runs in 6 innings. Then, with the game tied 2-2, he hit a solo home run to give the Reds a 3-2 lead. Only to see Masset give up 2 runs in the 7th. A pickup that hasn't worked for the Reds this year is Rolen. Effective last year, ineffective and injured this year. And don't look for any improvement. Instead of coming off the DL, Rolen had surgery on his left shoulder this week and will be out another 4-6 weeks.

August 11, 201113 yr This is certainly an odd report: Johnny Cueto’s Last Start Sabotaged by Bad Batch of Chicken Wings Johnny Cueto has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since returning from his triceps injury in May. He’s posted a 2.06 ERA in 17 starts. However, his recent run of excellence for the Reds was marred by a poor start on Saturday against the Cubs. Cueto gave up five runs on seven hits and couldn’t make it past the fourth inning. What led to the poor outing? As Redlegs Review pointed out to us, Cueto says a bad batch of chicken wings did him in. “I had bad chicken wings at the hotel,” Cueto told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “Felt like I was going to throw up.
