April 4, 20178 yr A lot of the Opening Day crowd aren't actual baseball fans, they are just there because it's a prestigious event and they want everyone to know they went to the game. The 5th inning is right around when people who don't care for baseball start to get bored with it and give up. They realize they've been sitting around for about 90 minutes and they are just barely past the halfway mark. The rain didn't help, but most of those people skipping out early would have left whether it rained or not.

When President Trump ruined the USFL by moving the season to go head-to-head with the NFL the party was over. But MLS made it work.

July 26, 20177 yr Former Red Todd Frazier's first at bat as a Yankee was against the Reds last night - and with bases loaded and no outs, he batted into a rare triple play. Even rarer was that because of the way the third out occurred (runner got into a pickle between second and third), the Yankees actually scored a run. The last time a run scoring triple play occurred was 2006 - sources indicate this has only happened 10 to 20 times, depending upon who you trust. I'm not sure that a hardcore population is out there anymore waiting for the Reds to return to MLB's throne. The Reds were such a huge deal in the 70s-90s because they had a long run of colorful players and an outrageous owner. There was just a lot to think about with the Reds. Now they have a boring owner, a boring coach, and a boring star. Votto might be the equal of any recent Reds greats, but he's boring. Similar problem with The Bengals. Marvin Lewis is a decent coach, but he is boring in a way that Sam Wyche was not. The Bengals teams of the 80s were loaded with huge personalities. Icky Woods launched a dance that swept the nation.

I'm not from here and moved here in Feb 2013 but the one thing I wish in Cincinnati was that the fans cared more about the Reds than they do. It is a really apathetic fan base and maybe that's what it's like when you haven't won big since 1990. That said, talking 2018, if they can get Desclafani back, their core of pitching should be much improved. I think the Cubs may need to re-build their pitching and there could be an opening for the reds two years from now to make a move if 3 of their young guys (Castillo and Stephenson and another young guy) along with DeSclafani and Bailey can become top 10 staff. Their hitting is solid right now and if they had any starting pitching they would have won a lot more games this year. Just my opinion but the Reds are kind of close yet so far away at the same exact time.

Some guy called into a Ken Broo Sunday radio show about attending Reds games. Guy took his GF and her 4 kids. GF does not have much $, so the guy wanted to treat her family. He bought the kids these ice cream things in a ceremonial take hope cup, $25 a pop, dude dropped $100 on ice cream lol. They drop ticket prices for early and mid week games might be nice to see that on concessions also. When I see $9 a pound giant ribeye steaks at Kroger (Corryville) hard to pass that up and not cook out at home and watch a game lol.

It's amazing how diluted the Reds stadium "experience" is. Nippert Stadium now is like Riverfront before the Jumbotron. There is nothing to do but watch the game. When we were kids going to a Reds game was the most exciting thing to do second only to King's Island. And there wasn't anything to do at the stadium other than watch the game. At some point they installed the Jumbotron, then a year or two later the jug machine appeared under Section 235. At Bengals games, they had the goddamn Bird Band set up in a tent next to the zoo's tiger. They didn't even have the Ben Gals for about 15 years.

Well these sports teams want to get people to actually come to the games. Other activities to do especially with kids is viewed as a positive for most people. If/when FC builds their new stadium it's going to be much closer to Great American in terms of amenities then Nippert. Even now FC still sets up a large kids area on the practice field next to the stadium. Bobble heads are dumb but until people stop showing up for them the Reds are going to keep putting them out.
September 12, 20177 yr One of the things soccer has going for it over football and baseball is the short length of the game. There's a pretty small variable at the end, but for the most part everyone knows the entire thing is going to be over in 2 hours. Baseball and football are another hour longer than that, and college football is even longer. That makes a big difference for families, especially on weeknights. Everyone can be at home and in bed by 10:00 after a 7:00 soccer game. Chances are you'll still be at GABP at 10:00 if you try to watch a full Reds game that starts at 7:10. Both the NFL and MLB are aware of the game length problem, and have taken steps to shorten games in recent years.
