Ten seconds later and it could have been a 9:30 shout-out at the 930 Club.

  • It's perfect timing, really. The RNC should invite him to speak at next week's victimfest along with all the other people that have been cancelled faced consequences for their actions.

  • The part that's most annoying to me is he started his apology by saying "if" I offended anyone, which is immediately insincere. I also like that he said "I'm a man of faith" like that is a good thing.

in honor of opening day i walked by the old polo grounds yesterday and checked out the restored brush steps, the only thing left of those days. it was a wreck for decades and closed off, but they finally fixed it up a few years ago. the steps are very active these days once again as it certainly still helps you get up and down from what was coogan's bluff. brush ties ny and cinci baseball history together as he was the same historic owner who had previously owned the reds.

Reds fans break attendance record on Opening Day

The Cincinnati Reds’ 2017 home opener brought record crowds to Great American Ball Park.

The crowd of 43,804 was the largest ever for a regular season game at the ballpark, the Reds reported.

I made my way down for Opening Day... I was actually disappointed by the number of people that stuck around beyond the 5th inning

The longest continuous Opening Day streak for any fan is 77 years. I didn't catch the woman's name, but she has been to every opening day since 1941. The Reds scrolled through each person's name who had been to 10 or more consecutive Reds Opening Days. This means her streak started before the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' entry into World War II.

A lot of the Opening Day crowd aren't actual baseball fans, they are just there because it's a prestigious event and they want everyone to know they went to the game. The 5th inning is right around when people who don't care for baseball start to get bored with it and give up.  They realize they've been sitting around for about 90 minutes and they are just barely past the halfway mark. The rain didn't help, but most of those people skipping out early would have left whether it rained or not.

^Get them some beers!

Less than half of the crowd at any sporting event actually follows the sport.  Same for big concerts.  It's just something to do.  I think baseball will be threatened in 10-20 years if soccer really catches on because that's something else to do for people who are looking for something to do, which is most people.

^ But soccer only plays 1-2 nights a week. Baseball plays 6 nights. In the summer when people are doing more activities, you can enjoy both.

Look at large cities like NY and Chicago. Their baseball teams are almost never home on the same nights and gives fans one local option. If the Cubs are home the Sox are away and vice versa. Same would be done for Soccer. It will be interesting to see how many times FC overlaps with the Reds this summer

I was surprised when MLS decided to clone baseball season as their season. When President Trump ruined the USFL by moving the season to go head-to-head with the NFL the party was over. But MLS made it work.

After about a week and a half of baseball, the Reds are off to a great start. They have the best record in baseball right now at 7-2, having just swept the Pirates. They went 2-1 against the Cardinals and the Phillies in their previous two series. The last time the Reds won 3 straight series to start off a season? 1990.

Wire-to-wire Part Deux, complete with Saddam catching that bomb.

The Reds are continuing to surprise everyone. At 9-5 they are in first place in the NL Central, 2 games up on the Cubs and 4 games up on the last place Cardinals. They have a +21 run differential, the best in MLB.

last night, Drew Storen threw an "immaculate inning" - 9 pitches, all strikes, for 3 strikeouts - to close out the game. He was just the 4th Reds pitcher all time to have such an inning.

Yes but we are so jaded here that we won't get excited even if they're in first at the All-Star Game.

Well now it looks like we won't have to worry about that anyway.

Scooter Gennett became just the 17th player ever to hit 4 home runs in one game, a feat that is rarer than pitching a perfect game. Last night he went 5-for-5, hit 4 HRs, and had a total of 10 RBIs. The Reds routed the Cardinals 13-1. In the history of MLB, this goes up there among the best offensive performances anyone has ever had.

Here's a clip of his 4th HR, a line drive to right field:

And with the Cardinals in town, there were actually 18,620 there to witness it.

He started the night with 3 HRs for the season

^ Another interesting stat is that he only has 42 career home runs, so nearly 10% of his career HR's were hit last night.

It was a totally awesome performance, and some rare excitement for Reds fans!  Considering how many runs our pitchers so often allow, we really need a slugger like Scooter!

Former Red Todd Frazier's first at bat as a Yankee was against the Reds last night - and with bases loaded and no outs, he batted into a rare triple play. Even rarer was that because of the way the third out occurred (runner got into a pickle between second and third), the Yankees actually scored a run. The last time a run scoring triple play occurred was 2006 - sources indicate this has only happened 10 to 20 times, depending upon who you trust.

Here's a link to a video of the play: https://streamable.com/2cdni

While some NFL players continue to disrespect the country with their poor behavior during the national anthem - Bryan Price sets a great example by pausing his heated argument with umpires to stand at attention for "God Bless America:"

Patriotism saves Bryan Price from ejection

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/reds/2017/09/10/patriotism-saves-bryan-price-ejection/651959001/

As Price does many times when a Reds player is ejected, he quickly exited the dugout to argue in favor of his player. The problem was timing. Gennett’s strikeout had ended the top of the seventh, and the Reds were playing on a Sunday. In ballparks across the country, that’s when the normal progression of the game is halted for the playing of God Bless America...

I'm just glad we don't hear God Bless America at every game like the Yankees and Braves do.

While some NFL players continue to disrespect the country with their poor behavior during the national anthem

What, in your view, is the appropriate way to protest?

^^So kneeling for the National Anthem is poor behavior? The great thing about this country is that you have the right to kneel during the National Anthem. You don't have to agree with why they are kneeling, but to say it's disrespectful is missing the point.

I had two facebook friends attend last week's weekday daytime game.  They both posted photos -- maybe 10,000 people there.  Probably the worst attendance ever for a Reds game during good weather.

^ It really feels like Cincinnati sports are entering the dark days again. Bengals get blanked in their opener for the first time since 1979 (shocking, considering the terrible teams of the 90s and early 00s). The Reds are finishing in last place by a long shot, and the future for next season doesn't look so hot either. I can't help but feel that both teams had their windows of opportunities the last 6 years or so, and they blew it.

Way too early to bail on the Bengals. O line, especially the tackles struggled. I don't expect them to be above average either. They better beat the Texans on Thursday night though. What is up the Indians fans? They are having a great season but their attendance is low.

Why are the Reds wins so low?

^Venture over to Indians forum. We've been talking about it all morning. Attendance up almost 6k a night. Season tickets up 30% this season. The Indians averaged 19k last year, so it's been a big improvement. The Indians will probably hit 2 million this year.

^^Here we go...lol. This won't end well.

OK. I just always think about when Jake/Progressive opened up it coincided seemingly with a lot of seasons of good baseball teams and high attendance. Assumed attendance has always been good.

I just don't have a lot of confidence that if the Reds suddenly turned it on and got to the playoffs for the next five years straight that the fan base would truly come back in a core way.  I'm not sure that a hardcore population is out there anymore waiting for the Reds to return to MLB's throne.  The Reds were such a huge deal in the 70s-90s because they had a long run of colorful players and an outrageous owner.  There was just a lot to think about with the Reds.

Now they have a boring owner, a boring coach, and a boring star.  Votto might be the equal of any recent Reds greats, but he's boring.

Similar problem with The Bengals.  Marvin Lewis is a decent coach, but he is boring in a way that Sam Wyche was not.  The Bengals teams of the 80s were loaded with huge personalities.  Icky Woods launched a dance that swept the nation.

Jeez you guys get angry very easily. I don't care if the Reds or Bengals are good, bad, average I don't let it bother me.

Only Cleveland fans are allowed to ask about attendance? I am not ripping anyone, just curious.

Understood, I amended my comment. Sorry, just been battling it all morning on the Indians forum.

Why are you so insecure, man? Every post that could be interpreted as even the most minor slight towards Cleveland elicits a really intense, vicious response from you.

I'm not from here and moved here in Feb 2013 but the one thing I wish in Cincinnati was that the fans cared more about the Reds than they do. It is a really apathetic fan base and maybe that's what it's like when you haven't won big since 1990.

That said, talking 2018, if they can get Desclafani back, their core of pitching should be much improved. I think the Cubs may need to re-build their pitching and there could be an opening for the reds two years from now to make a move if 3 of their young guys (Castillo and Stephenson and another young guy) along with DeSclafani and Bailey can become top 10 staff. Their hitting is solid right now and if they had any starting pitching they would have won a lot more games this year.

Just my opinion but the Reds are kind of close yet so far away at the same exact time.

^2013 was really the Reds last shot, for awhile. They lost the wild card game in the playoffs and everyone sort of knew that was the end of that run, and that it would be 5-10 years before they were decent again. I had always gone to 10-25 games a year, and listened to the games on the radio every day even in bad years, but since the end of that 2013 season it's been more like 5 games or so and I think I've only listened to a handful of games this year. These long "rebuilding" periods create a lot of apathy in general. I'm pretty fickle when it comes to sports, too. If the teams I like start sucking I stop caring. I treat it like anything else - if I had a restaurant I really liked and their quality took a huge, sudden nosedive, I wouldn't keep eating crappy food just to support them.

It all ended for me when they changed their beer cans from 24oz to 16oz but kept them the same price... My reds koozie no longer fit the cans and I haven't been back since.

I don't like how Castellini keeps trotting out the past to kindle interest.  Obviously the Reds are one of the great historic franchises, but the insistence on family-friendliness and yet another tribute to the Big Red Machine is killing them.  The Bengals and the soccer team don't care about family friendliness and they're packing their games.

Some guy called into a Ken Broo Sunday radio show about attending Reds games. Guy took his GF and her 4 kids. GF does not have much $, so the guy wanted to treat her family. He bought the kids these ice cream things in a ceremonial take hope cup, $25 a pop, dude dropped $100 on ice cream lol. They drop ticket prices for early and mid week games might be nice to see that on concessions also. When I see $9 a pound giant ribeye steaks at Kroger (Corryville) hard to pass that up and not cook out at home and watch a game lol.

Seriously?  Do you even watch or attend games for any of these teams?  FC is all about family friendly atmosphere and it's a huge reason why their attendance is so great.  There are a ton of kids at every FC game and they do all kinds of giveaways, ticket discounts and promotions to get families to attend.  The Bengals meanwhile do absolutely nothing to try to get families or kids to attend games and have one of the lowest average attendance in all of the NFL.  The NFL as a whole is the opposite of family friendly and that combined with crazy high prices and ever increasing quality tv's has lead to it having attendance problems across the league.

To be fair, the Bengals do absolutely nothing to try to get anyone to attend their games. You would barely know it's the Bengals home stadium if it weren't for the large Fifth Third ads featuring Bengals players on the walls.

One of several reasons I've stopped supporting the Reds, the baseball season is just too long. And here is MLB making it even longer!

Reds' 2018 Opening Day will be earliest ever

Nationals come to town March 29

CINCINNATI – The Reds’ 2018 Opening Day will be the earliest ever.

The Reds will host the Washington Nationals on Thursday, March 29 – three days before Easter - according to next season’s schedule announced Tuesday. Time is TBA.

The early date is the result of a new scheduling format that adds a week to the season and gives teams three to four additional off days, according to MLB.  All teams will open on March 29 and end Sept. 30.

DJiScyMXoAE-G0E.jpg

The previous earliest Reds' Opening Day was March 31 in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2011 and 2014. The Nationals have never played here on Opening Day, though their predecessors, the Montreal Expos, opened here in 1970, '87, '93 and '96.

FC is not passing out bobble heads and doesn't have a huge part of the stadium dedicated to a playground.  It doesn't have Gapper.  It's amazing how diluted the Reds stadium "experience" is.

Nippert Stadium now is like Riverfront before the Jumbotron.  There is nothing to do but watch the game.  When we were kids going to a Reds game was the most exciting thing to do second only to King's Island.  And there wasn't anything to do at the stadium other than watch the game.  At some point they installed the Jumbotron, then a year or two later the jug machine appeared under Section 235.

At Bengals games, they had the goddamn Bird Band set up in a tent next to the zoo's tiger.  They didn't even have the Ben Gals for about 15 years.

Cygnus, the season is too long no doubt about it.

Well these sports teams want to get people to actually come to the games.  Other activities to do especially with kids is viewed as a positive for most people.  If/when FC builds their new stadium it's going to be much closer to Great American in terms of amenities then Nippert.  Even now FC still sets up a large kids area on the practice field next to the stadium.  Bobble heads are dumb but until people stop showing up for them the Reds are going to keep putting them out.

One of the things soccer has going for it over football and baseball is the short length of the game. There's a pretty small variable at the end, but for the most part everyone knows the entire thing is going to be over in 2 hours. Baseball and football are another hour longer than that, and college football is even longer. That makes a big difference for families, especially on weeknights. Everyone can be at home and in bed by 10:00 after a 7:00 soccer game. Chances are you'll still be at GABP at 10:00 if you try to watch a full Reds game that starts at 7:10. Both the NFL and MLB are aware of the game length problem, and have taken steps to shorten games in recent years.
