don't we already have like 4 uc construction/ mainstreet threads?

No.  There was only one MainStreet thread.  The other threads are about different projects.

There were a couple of City Photo threads that had pics of MainStreet in them.

Meet me on MainStreet

Campus Recreation Center

Recreation facility completes MainStreet

Last to make its grand entrance on MainStreet -- but right on schedule -- the University of Cincinnati's new 350,000-square-foot Campus Recreation Center will be worth the wait. Its pools, courts, fitness equipment, dining options, classrooms and living spaces should all be ready early in 2006.

In fact, the center's suite-style housing units atop the building are expected to open in time for fall quarter '05. The 227-bed development, commanding "a cool view over Burnet Woods," according to university architect Ron Kull, is expected to be much enjoyed by the upperclass students for which it has been designed.

What could be more convenient than a room at the top of the recreation facility? Imagine a central location on campus, a quick morning workout on the indoor track or a dip in the pool, a healthy breakfast at the juice bar or marché restaurant, a stop at the convenience store for an extra notebook, then off to class -- perhaps in one of the six state-of-the-art electronic classrooms inside your building.

The campus recreation center is set to open the classrooms and housing September 21.  All other facilites will open January 2.

Also, the Main Street "open spaces" should also be completed by the time classes start September 21.

Actually, the housing opens September 15 so students have time to get settled before classes start. It is a nice building----I never had anything that nice when i was in school.

The Market on Main part of the complex should open around the 21st too.  I was unaware the classrooms were opening up that soon.

Campus mixed use, what a great idea. I bet those suites will be in high demand.

AndrewN, this was all according to UC News, so they may not have updated the opening numbers on the website.

New CRC residence hall raises questions for students

By Lydia Palazzolo

Published: Monday, September 26, 2005

Metal, gray, colossal and hovering over Sigma Sigma Commons, the new Recreation Center dorm stands out as one of the newest additions to the University of Cincinnati.  Students, however, often came forward with a common concern: Why did the designers make the windows like those of a jail cell?

These dorm rooms, reserved for upperclassmen and honors students are modern and sleek.  Rooms come complete with chairs, a mini-fridge and a microwave. From the entrance, the rooms branch off into a bathroom on the side and two bedroom suites in back. In each room there are artsy light-coves tucked away behind corners that give off a very contemporary feel.

Rec Center scheduled to open in phases

Classrooms, housing open, workout spaces to come

By Amanda Amsel

Published: Monday, September 26, 2005

University of Cincinnati students heading back to classes this week will be met by an array of newly-opened buildings dotting the Clifton campus. Among those buildings is the soon-to-be-completed Recreation Center.  The new Rec Center, located near Sigma Sigma Commons, is situated in the center of West Campus.

"It is believed that this center will become the new social hub on campus," Emily Piercey, a Recreation Center building supervisor, said.  The 335,000 sq. ft. building will be partly completed beginning Fall Quarter. The far east- and west-wings of the complex will be open, housing six academic classrooms. The 224 beds and suite-style rooms will be home for, but not limited to, upperclassmen, according to Kim Schmidt, director of the Campus Recreation Center.

>Students, however, often came forward with a common concern: Why did the designers make the windows like those of a jail cell?

Because it's UC, that's why.

> In each room there are artsy light-coves tucked away behind corners that give off a very contemporary feel.

Wow, I'm jealous.

>Kurt Ponting, senior staff engineer for the project said that some people were worried about outsiders seeing in while students are changing.

Come on.  We solved this problem eons ago.  Pull the blinds like billions of people do around the globe every day.

>With the style of windows chosen, there wouldn't be enough room for any forbidden body parts to be fully viewed through the window and second, the closest onlooker would have to be at least 100 feet away.

Freshman males and binoculars are a a college instituion.

>Students, however, often came forward with a common concern: Why did the designers make the windows like those of a jail cell?

Because its Morphosis...get off UC.

UC gets ready to unveil $113M rec center

Avant-garde building loaded with trendy items

By Lori Kurtzman

Enquirer staff writer

It hasn't been an easy project. There were all those odd angles and random round skylights punched into the roof, not to mention the sheer size of the building - 350,000 square feet of thrilling and complex architecture.

The $113 million University of Cincinnati Campus Recreation Center has been the toughest job of Dale Beeler's career.  "By a long shot," Beeler, a senior architect with local firm KZF Design Inc., said as he walked through the belly of the massive building. "I think I lost most of my hair doing this job."

"At UC, students haven't been too vocally critical or supportive of the project or its cost, though a student newspaper columnist once remarked that UC should start investing in matching brick buildings rather than signature architecture: "All we see is a bunch of eclectic buildings that are just painful to look at once their novelty wears off," wrote Joshua Rinaldi."

New recreation center a study in complexity

Structure created around idea of transparency, architects say

By: Meghan Goth

Issue date: 1/12/06 Section: News

The University of Cincinnati's new Campus Recreation Center is larger than any other structure completed so far in the university's Master Plan, according to the university Web site.  At 350,000 square feet, the principal architects on the project said it is the most complicated building they have designed during their lifetimes.

Kristina Loock, principal architect on the project and a licensed architect for the architectural firm Morphosis, said the building is the most complex structure she has ever worked on.  "Just look at the outside of the building," she said. "It's complex in the sense that it would normally be several different buildings."

Rec Center grand opening set for Feb. 6

By: Stephanie Swiggum

Issue date: 1/25/06 Section: News

The Campus Recreation Center, originally advertised to open its doors at the beginning of Winter Quarter, will now open Feb. 6.  "The anticipation of the opening has been worth the wait. The new amenities will blow students, faculty and staff away," Lee Ann Werner, the associate director of Membership and Marketing, said.

However, the entire Rec Center will not open all at once. The gymnasium is the only part that will not be ready.  "Humidity levels in the gymnasium floor prevented the completion of the floor sealing process over winter break," said Werner in a statement. "The sealant is an irritant and the process is best done when residents are out of the building;

UC Building Rises in the Ranks: Named Among the World’s Elite Eleven

The most prestigious professional group in American architecture has just named UC’s Joseph A. Steger Student Life Center among the world’s 11 best buildings of 2006. The judges praised the building’s dynamism

By: Mary Reilly

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is just out with its 2006 international rankings of the world’s most notable projects, and the University of Cincinnati’s Joseph A. Steger Student Life Center (SLC) is among those named as the 11 most exciting buildings – taking its place among winning projects from throughout the United States and Europe.

The 2006 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture represent the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture and urban design.

The architects from throughout the U.S. who served on the AIA award jury noted that the 42-foot-wide, 500-feet long crescent form of the SLC represents a design challenge that has been well met. That challenge came from the extremely narrow building site available for the structure along with 60-foot grade changes along the spine of the site.

Hey...thanks for posting that.  I was going to get around to it eventually!

I'm not completely sold on the building myself, but an honor is an honor, and good for UC!

  • 3 weeks later...

Wow! I'm going to have to go walk through the building again and pay closer attention.

I have been working out at the new rec and I can tell you it is much better than the basement of the Shoe.

UC meets on 'Main'

BY LORI KURTZMAN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Steve Trepkowski was there six years ago when the construction fences went up in the middle of the University of Cincinnati campus. He was there this year when they came down, too. That's when the 2005 graduate and current UC employee told a friend: "We got our campus back."

Trepkowski's comment is, perhaps, a suitable subtitle for "Meet Me on MainStreet," a two-day campus celebration starting today that marks the end of that construction and the emergence of a $250 million project 10 years in the making. A series of events, including fireworks, a carnival and an outdoor hip-hop concert, will give UC the chance to show off its new core to community members.

i wish those pics werent in black and white.  this is always good news for uc.  i need to go there and check it out next time im in town.

i was up there the other day for the baseball game and walked through the new recreation center...wow is that building cool!  at the baseball game i overheard conversations of current and old administrators just raving about the new varsity village.  i didnt go to uc and i can really say that i remember what that part of campus was like before all of the construction but wow is it impressive over there.  truely one of the most unique urban spaces i have ever seen

In 1990, that strip was the back door to Tangeman going to or leaving from hanging out at the Film Society offices...at least for me!
