Posted February 10, 200817 yr Little Five Points is a great area in Atlanta...it is very eclectic and very diverse. The place is also very active as you will see in the pictures. I think of this place as being what Ludlow Ave, in Cincinnati, should be...more activity, more diversity...and larger. 1. 2. Lots of vendors and what not in this little area...just shortly after taking this picture I listened to this guys new Hip-Hop album that he was trying to sell (not bad, but not worth $10). 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. The notorious Vortex Bar & Grill 14. 15. 16. 17. Here is a place that some of you may find interesting, and some may find disturbing. Vickery is far north and actually sits outside of Fulton County. There is a horse ranch thingee across the street from this development. My personal opinion is that it is in the middle of nowhere, and is simply densely built sprawl that is trying to imitate the past. BUT I feel that it is very well executed, and the concept seems to be embraced by the residents who live there. I'll quit talking for now and let you decide what you think... 18. 19. 20. February 10, 200817 yr It's amazing that suburban cities are turning urban while urban cities are turning suburban (re: Bond Hill & Westwood developments, etc). February 10, 200817 yr While that new development looks better than most, I still find it to be sort of silly. If I were building free standing houses in Atlanta, I would use wood and incorporate some of the vernacular style, representative in the homes of Grant Park.
February 10, 200817 yr Just looking at the photos, without experiencing the physical context (middle of nowhere) firsthand, I'm impressed. Some of the houses look like the ones you'd find in a well-established 1930s neighborhood.
February 10, 200817 yr For those interested a little more in Vickery http://www.vickeryvillage.com/ http://www.hedgewoodhomes.com/neighborhoods/profile.aspx?cid=2 For context, it's about 25 miles outside the core of ATL, but well within the expanding northern suburbs that stretch north to Dawson County. The "horse ranch thingee" across the street is part of the Polo Golf and Country Club. So, some people who could buy a $1MM house across the street at the Polo Club on a 1 acre lot are choosing to buy a comparably priced house on a .2 acre lot within whispering distance of their neighbor...all to be part of a "community."
February 10, 200817 yr great job. little five points is a very lively youth culture neighborhood. every decent sized city should have one. silly funky places like the vortex remind me of camden in london (which i saw on the news this morning had a major fire). i dk what to say about vickery. the two best things are that it has decent density and many of the homes look good.
February 10, 200817 yr I LOVE Little Five Points. My favorite neighborhood in Atlanta. Reminds me a lot of Bucktown in Chicago. Haven't been there in several years, but it looks like not much of the area has changed, which in my opinion, is a very good thing. LFP is such a great, unique area.

Nope no Virginia-Highlands here...the first part was all right in the heart of Little Five Points, and the second was far far away from VH. While that new development looks better than most, I still find it to be sort of silly. If I were building free standing houses in Atlanta, I would use wood and incorporate some of the vernacular style, representative in the homes of Grant Park. They did do that is some of the houses there...I just didn't capture that element as much. Maybe because it is so prominent in virtually all new construction in suburban Atlanta. The stuff I tried to capture was Vickery's attempt at mimicking the past and other designs. Shout Out: I might also add that igon is the kind soul that has been showing me these different places in Atlanta.
February 10, 200817 yr ...it's funny... since atlanta lacks the architechture of cincy, most of these homes are knock downs built for the rich... which the local historic society is trying to put a halt to. My best friend lives in this hood... not only does it have the charm and grit of a trendy young neighborhood, it has some of the finest, most established high end restaraunts in town... if I didn't have a kid, L5P would be home... just a great place...
