Then I wonder why this is a big announcement?  My impression was always that Cleveland was supposed to get about 800 new positions, even though questionable at times.  PR for the city I guess..

And while Mr LaTourette, Nance and the Greater Cleveland Partnership received alot of credit here, I have to give some to John McCain.  He was one of the initiators of the legislation for the 2005 round of closings (of course doing everything to spare the bases in Arizona)  Because I had done some work with him and had access to talk to him, I informed him of the faulty numbers and rankings etc., (he knew my passion for Cleveland) so he got on the horn and made some strong recommendations that Cleveland's DFAS needed to be reassessed.  Its hard to say exactly what impact he had though, but I was just impressed by his actions and think he does have substance.

However, I'm much less impressed by him during his campaign and will not be voting for him.....

And  yet they will not call my sorry Master Degree but for a stupid interview for one of the stupid G1 - G4 positions.

Don't understand that at all considering some of the people I see walk out of that building

There seems to be alot of shifting around with the numbers...?

DFAS center to add hundreds of jobs by 2011

DFAS is the gift that keeps on giving for Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

Civic leaders today unwrapped the latest decision by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service to grow the federal agency’s staff here from about 1,600 today to more than 2,000 by 2011 — or as the celebrants put it, “2,011 in 2011.”

OK Willyboy. That was three postings of the same article. You're on double-secret probation! ;)

Seriously, it sounds like a new office building is needed. Or at least a renovated building near the federal building. Is the East Ohio Building still mostly vacant?

good guess... but it's actually lower than that.   seriously the building is almost completely empty.  There are currently two tennants in there.  Something like this would make a lot more sense than building something new.

That would be a fabulous hotel.  I swear, you folks are lucky I'm not a rich developer, I'd gay this town up a notch or four!

It's often talked of as a residential conversion.  I hear the site lines are great.

Well........... if you sell your NYC/LA/Chicago/Miami/wherever else pads, you probably could buy that building :-D

Aww, come on, take one for the team!  :whip:

If DFAS is to build a new building, adapting and existing one is unlikely for security reasons. Government buildings needs to be set back (50 feet) from the street in order to meet security requirements established after the Oklahoma bombing. In addition, critical spaces within the structure, including the lobby, mailroom, loading dock, and underground parking garage, would have to be structurally fortified - "hardened,"  against explosive threats from nearby public areas.

^Yeah, that is unfortunate.  Guess that explains the horrific, and I mean horrific FBI building on Lakeside.  Possibly the worst new building ever constructed on so many levels.

Begging the question why was it built on Lakeside...  plenty of suitable options that wouldn't waste the view.

Because they wanted to be near downtown on a large piece of land. That was the only one that worked (though I think the Aviation High School might have worked).

True, but then DFAS does have offices at North Point. Though much of it is set back from the street -- but not all of it. Perhaps DFAS should revisit building in the Waterfront Line's loop where Eaton was proposed?

The last official word that I can find about a new building in the flats was the following from DFAS-CL director Marth J. Smith in a newsletter last november...

"We realize that space is an issue at the DFAS-Cleveland location as workloads and personnel move from closing DFAS locations to Cleveland. DFAS-Cleveland space requirements have been submitted to the General Services Administration (GSA). However, DFAS has no involvement in the decision, outside of the request. The City of Cleveland and GSA must determine the need; and to date, no formal position has been provided by GSA on the matter. However, DFAS-Cleveland has secured space in the North Point building and is looking at space availability and alternatives within the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building."

nice follow up, grumpy.

Just another followup to this. In an internal announcement about this that I got in my email a few minutes ago I saw this line.

DFAS Cleveland will add 101 jobs during the next three years; 1,910 of the projected 2,011 are currently in place.

So apparently either our local media misunderstood, or our local representatives are bragging about jobs that have already come here and just grandstanding. Either way I'm satisfied with more people working downtown.

Just to follow up on this, the official word was put out to all of DFAS this morning that GSA will not be putting up a new building. Instead they're going to renovate the current building to bring it into compliance with DOD regulations on safety and security of existing structures. Meaning blast resistant windows (to the 14th floor) and higher blast walls around the exterior of the structure. Much of this is already being done as part of the plaza improvement project that's been going on for a couple years now. (How freakin' long does it take to do some landscaping and put up a concrete wall?)

I'm sure it'll be in the news in the next few days, but word is DFAS Cleveland is getting a few hundred new employees over the next year or so. Most of the jobs are positions that were outsourced, and they're replacing contractors with government employees, but still new jobs is always a good thing. (God only knows where they'll find room for more people in this building.)

Thanks for the update Grumpy Smurf!

Good to hear, sorry you're a sardine.

I see this hasn't been updated in a while, but has anybody heard anything about this project? Is it still supposed to happen or is it dead?

Are you talking about DFAS geeting additional people or the Federal Building redo?  If your talking about the Federal Builidng redo you are in the wrong thread.  But yeah that is supposedly still happening.  And DFAS has hired additional people not the amount hoped for though.

The façade project is definitely still on. (The building is being inspected by the fire department this morning as part of planning in case there's a fire during construction.)

As for hiring new people, most of the openings they had have already been filled. The few that weren't are on hold because DOD is on a hiring freeze.
