Posted February 12, 200817 yr I just did a google map search for Cincinnati Ohio, on the second closest zoom level, when set on 'terrain' mode, I saw a geographic feature called 'goat hill' just south of mt auburn any clue? http://maps.google.com/maps
February 12, 200817 yr I have heard of this before...but forget the story behind it. BTW, here is a direct link for everyone (center of the page...immediately West of Eden Park): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=cincinnati,+oh&ie=UTF8&ll=39.114778,-84.501042&spn=0.024107,0.045319&t=p&z=15&om=0
February 12, 200817 yr Undoubtably it's an old place name. It is mentioned in the 1943 WPA Guide to Cincinnati. How it got to google maps is a good question. I checked some old maps that I have and did not find "Goat Hill." Very interesting.
February 12, 200817 yr Goat Hill is the Eastern Boundary of Prospect Hill. The name is perfect since it is very steep in places. I have been cleaning up that hillside for 4 years and have seen some interesting things. Everything from a Peregrine Falcon and 8 point Buck to an Abandoned car halfway down. To best see Goat Hill, park at Staples on Reading rd, cross the street and go to the right hand side of High ST Store. Go up the Highland Ave steps and enjoy one of the deer trails to the right. There is a tiny blurb about it on our neighborhood website. http://www.prospecthillcincinnati.org/?q=node/11
February 12, 200817 yr Fascinating, I guess Google has included quite a number of 'deceased' places on Google maps. Another one is Sanfordtown in NKY. It is at the intersection of Madison Pike, 275, and Dudley Pike. That area hasn't been a real neighborhood in probably 35 years and possibly 50 or 60. And you might ask, how do I know this? Let's just say I've got connections in that part of South Covington hood.
February 22, 200817 yr Mapquest uses some old place names on things as well. It correctly has Little Bethlehem for the Glencoe Place area. Needless to say I was quite surprised to see this on mapquest.
February 22, 200817 yr It correctly has Little Bethlehem for the Glencoe Place area. Needless to say I was quite surprised to see this on mapquest. Interesting.. I have an old Caroline Williams book that refers to the area of the Vine street steps(the stairway that takes you up to peete and rice steps to mulberry) as the area known as little bethlehem. The book came out in the early 1930's. Glencoe is just a short walk northeast of there.
