CLOSED: With some area businesses leaving, what’s next?

Jason Hawk | The Chronicle-Telegram

Suddenly, prices of milk and bread start climbing. Foreclosures rise. And pink slips begin appearing on office desks.

If you remember 2001, or 1991, 1982, 1980 or 1975, then you know the warning signs.

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems to leave Elyria HQ, but remain in Northeast Ohio

By SCOTT SUTTELL

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC is staying in Northeast Ohio, though it’s leaving its longtime Elyria headquarters.

The company, which last fall announced it was exploring a headquarters move, said in a news release that it will “construct a new headquarters in Northeast Ohio, expected to be within a 20-mile radius of its current Elyria location.”

Bendix, which makes safety and braking system technologies for commercial vehicles, did not identify where the new headquarters will be built. It said the date for groundbreaking for the new headquarters “has not yet been finalized and is also contingent on final approvals from state and local entities.”

The company will continue to operate out of its current Elyria headquarters on Cleveland Street until construction of the new headquarters is complete. The move is a blow for Elyria, where Bendix is one of the city’s largest employers and generates more than $800,000 annually in income tax revenue, according to this story from The (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram.

Comments Email Print

July 24, 2015 UPDATED AN HOUR AGO

By DAN SHINGLER

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems is moving its headquarters and about 550 employees from Elyria to Avon.

The company has said for some time it was planning to move into new digs and on Friday, July 24, it announced it would move to Avon, but it has not yet announced an address or plans for its new headquarters. It said it has signed an agreement to purchase a 60-acre site, about 10 miles from its current headquarters at 901 Cleveland St. in Elyria.

The company said it will work through state and local approval of its plans before announcing a groundbreaking.

...Bendix has indicated interest in a site on the south side of Chester Road just east of the planned Menard at Avon Crossing West retail center, according to Pam Fechter, Avon planning coordinator.

"The Avon City Council is set to give the company a 14-year 90% real estate tax break, and a cash incentive equal to 0.25% of the firm’s in-city payroll for seven years. Meanwhile, the City of Elyria stands to lose nearly $1.6 million annually, 4.76% of its total income tax revenue. The mayor of Elyria, Frank Whitfield, declined to comment beyond social media posts he’s made indicating that he was proud of his community for its attempts to keep the company."
