The records apparently did not hold up well in the winter and I'm pretty sure they have decided not to continue this

March 2, 20169 yr I also find the "Long Live Rock" sign super tacky - At least the plastic plants have been removed. What the rock hall needs is to embody the art it stands for - rock n roll. The building itself looks way cool. But the live, performance element of music should be much more integrated into the space and the experience. I know they give concerts in the first floor "lobby" area at times - but I think the missing element has always been the lack of a real concert hall for live performances at the RRHF. I could imagine an outdoor theater with the Hall itself and the lake as a backdrop. I don't think folks living in the forthcoming condos/apartments on the lakefront would mind that in the summer.

March 5, 20169 yr The City Design Review Committee made a great call on this one! As Dave68 said, these new features were "uninspired add ons" (at best!) The new "stage" looks like something you'd see at a county fair, set up for some high school band to play at. The "Long Live Rock" sign looks cheap and tacky - I don't know maybe they thought they were creating a Cleveland version of the "Hollywood" sign - but it just doesn't work. The goal of making the plaza vibrant and having people there is great! But the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is a world-class and unique attraction and developing it should not be done on the cheap. If " a stage" is added, it should be an actual venue where people can go and sit down and watch a major act perform. Can that element be located on the front plaza in front of the entrance - no - maybe there's enough area on the west side of the building ... the big problem is that the hall is just disconnected from any kind of shopping, dining and fun places (other than the Science Hall, of course) As a result, people "go in" and "go out. The new development on the lakefront and the pedestrian bridge should greatly help enliven the area...but I, for one, am happy that these new design features are going to be rethought.
March 7, 20169 yr I am glad design review held off on the approval of the RockHall Plaza, it definitely needs some work. I don't like the red/black color scheme and the stage is something straight out of the county fair. I understand the limited budget but it's just weak to me. I actually don't mind the Long Live Rock component, that could be a fun place for people to meet. I would like to see the center of the plaza, where it resembles a record to have some kind of LED light show or a fountain that could move with the music. But for now just replace the plastic plants, I would be good with that. If " a stage" is added, it should be an actual venue where people can go and sit down and watch a major act perform. Obviously, seating for 100 is really tiny and would preclude any real significant musical experiences there. I wonder if instead of a perfectly circular theater - it could be circular only on the south side and open up/fan out on the other 3 sides to accommodate at least a few hundred people, which is still smaller than many junior high auditoriums. (Your April 3 post beautifully illustrates the space limitations of the area) Maybe this is fantasty, but would there be any possibility to land fill the southern most section of the harbor between the science museum and the rock hall to create a bigger space for a real theater?

March 7, 20169 yr It was an obvious design flaw that IM Pei never included a large-format performance space in a building dedicated to rock-n-roll. Even the current lobby performance area was an after-the-fact add on. I wonder what happened to the barge that used to be docked there for the old rib cookoff stage?

Thanks and I'll answer briefly as I don't want to take this to far off topic as this is not actual development. But I see that space for something intimate, a smaller venue. For mostly acoustic performances, lectures etc. Keep in mind lawn seating would be available with site lines to the stage. And the seating would be removable if you wanted a standing room only type event. So the capacity would be fluid.

This city has such a plethora of performance space, yet it seems rare for most of them to serve any real purpose. With the Rock Hall site limitations this should be a real opportunity, in tandem with the pedestrian bridges, to utilize/incorporate some of these mall spaces, and even Public Hall. It really would serve downtown best to think this way as well as the pedestrian bridge would provide a natural link, with the mall areas not seeming so isolated as the Rock Hall.

Contaminated sediments at the far end of the old channel cause tumors in fish.
