It was mentioned a few years ago and quietly faded away (funding issues, I think), but IMHO it would be huge for Cleveland and the Rock Hall to have gold records in the sidewalks around downtown of the inducted artists. It could be the Rock Walk of Fame.

They actually did this on Lakeside in front of Public Hall as a phase 1. The records apparently did not hold up well in the winter and I'm pretty sure they have decided not to continue this

Do they have to be real records?? How about stainless steel records?

GUYS just to clarify, I originally posted about the renovation of the PLAZA which was announced today and will start soon.  The Walk of Fame is already in place and over!  The idea as far as I know has been abandoned.  Thanks

THANK GOD!  The end of the plastic shrubs!

"Rock Hall plans lively shakeup of its plaza, entry experience"

I also find the "Long Live Rock" sign super tacky -  At least the plastic plants have been removed.

What the rock hall needs is to embody the art it stands for - rock n roll. The building itself looks way cool. But the live, performance element of music should be much more integrated into the space and the experience.  I know they give concerts in the first floor "lobby" area at times - but I think the missing element has always been the lack of a real concert hall for live performances at the RRHF.  I could imagine an outdoor theater with the Hall itself and the lake as a backdrop.  I don't think folks living in the forthcoming condos/apartments on the lakefront would mind that in the summer.

Nothing of this current design enhances the IM Pei architecture.  Uninspired add ons.

don't worry, the rock-O-meter will offer great concert space while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding architecture

City Design Review Committee Has Harsh Words for Rock Hall Redesign Plans

So remember the other day when plans for an "enlivened" re-design of the Rock Hall's entry plaza were unveiled to the world and everyone got excited? Us too. It was literally two days ago, and though public reaction included as many "mehs" as "woohoos" (very scientific terms), the general consensus was that it was far beyond time for the Rock Hall to get a face lift and if there's anything Cleveland can get behind with shares and RTs, it's articles about something new happening. Sure, "Long Live Rock" is a corny phrase to choose as the very first words for visitors to see, but hey, it was something.

City's design review committee tables plan to enliven Rock and Roll Hall of Fame plaza

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum did not get to pass "go" at Thursday's meeting of the city's Downtown/Flats Design Review Committee with plans to enliven its main entry plaza.

The 10-member committee voted unanimously to table the Rock Hall's plans for two weeks, preventing the city's Planning Commission from considering the plans – and possibly even approving them – Friday.

The City Design Review Committee made a great call on this one!  As Dave68 said, these new features were "uninspired add ons" (at best!)

The new "stage" looks like something you'd see at a county fair, set up for some high school band to play at.  The "Long Live Rock" sign looks cheap and tacky - I don't know maybe they thought they were creating a Cleveland version of the "Hollywood" sign - but it just doesn't work.

The goal of making the plaza vibrant and having people there is great!  But the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is a world-class and unique attraction and developing it should not be done on the cheap.  If " a stage" is added, it should be an actual venue where people can go and sit down and watch a major act perform.  Can that element be located on the front plaza in front of the entrance - no - maybe there's enough area on the west side of the building ... the big problem is that the hall is just disconnected from any kind of shopping, dining and fun places (other than the Science Hall, of course)  As a result, people  "go in" and "go out.  The new development on the lakefront and the pedestrian bridge should greatly help enliven the area...but I, for one, am happy that these new design features are going to be rethought.

I am glad design review held off on the approval of the RockHall Plaza, it definitely needs some work. I don't like the red/black color scheme and the stage is something straight out of the county fair. I understand the limited budget but it's just weak to me.  I actually don't mind the Long Live Rock component, that could be a fun place for people to meet. I would like to see the center of the plaza, where it resembles a record to have some kind of LED light show or a fountain that could move with the music. But for now just replace the plastic plants, I would be good with that.

Hmm let me think about that, Oh yeah...

Thanks FreeThink for the link back to your brilliant April 3, 2015 post where you propose the Harborside Theater - great graphics, you've got it all figured out.  Obviously, seating for 100 is really tiny and would preclude any real significant musical experiences there.  I wonder if instead of a perfectly circular theater - it could be circular only on the south side and open up/fan out on the other 3 sides to accommodate at least a few hundred people, which is still smaller than many junior high auditoriums. (Your April 3 post beautifully illustrates the space limitations of the area)  Maybe this is fantasty, but would there be any possibility to land fill the southern most section of the harbor between the science museum and the rock hall to create a bigger space for a real theater?

^^ I was terribly convinced that link was going to take me to the Rock-o-Meter thread.

It was an obvious design flaw that IM Pei never included a large-format performance space in a building dedicated to rock-n-roll.  Even the current lobby performance area was an after-the-fact add on.    I wonder what happened to the barge that used to be docked there for the old rib cookoff stage?

Thanks and I'll answer briefly as I don't want to take this to far off topic as this is not actual development. But I see that space for something intimate, a smaller venue. For mostly acoustic performances, lectures etc. Keep in mind lawn seating would be available with site lines to the stage. And the seating would be removable if you wanted a standing room only type event. So the capacity would be fluid.

I wish they would incorporate the performance stage  on Malls B or C.  With the lakefront pedestrian bridge linking the two locations a great opportunity is made to connect the two . Mall B already has a sloped hill for seating and I believe the infrastructure was designed to accommodate sound and lighting.  Let's leave the Rock and Roll Plaza as is and just remove the plastic plants from the planters until the bridge is completed

Bingo!

This city has such a plethora of performance space, yet it seems rare for most of them to serve any real purpose.  With the Rock Hall site limitations this should be a real opportunity, in tandem with the pedestrian bridges, to utilize/incorporate some of these mall spaces, and even Public Hall.  It really would serve downtown best to think this way as well as the pedestrian bridge would provide a natural link, with the mall areas not seeming so isolated as the Rock Hall.

City design review committee tables FirstEnergy's second request to raze Lake Shore power plant

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

on March 31, 2016 at 2:22 PM, updated March 31, 2016 at 3:33 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the second time in four months, the city's Downtown/Flats Design Review Committee on Thursday unanimously tabled FirstEnergy's request for approval to demolish its permanently idled Lake Shore power plant along the I-90 Shoreway at East 72nd Street.

FirstEnergy officials including David Turner, manager of external affairs, and Ketan Patel, director of real estate, said their company wants the plant demolished because it has begun to degrade structurally since it was shut down a year ago.

New plan for East Side lakefront trail loop and neighborhood links is ready for city review

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A pragmatic, no-frills vision for new trails and neighborhood connections to the East Side lakefront, with an estimated cost of $24.5 million, is ready for potential approval by the city and the search for money to make it a reality.

The plan, authored by the Cleveland offices of the engineering firm of Michael Baker International and Akron-based Environmental Design Group, which designed the new Lakewood Solstice Steps, is on the agenda for review at Friday's meeting of the city's planning commission.

Does anyone know how that new beach house is coming along that was proposed to be done by this summer down at edgewater? Seems like i haven't heard anything about it since August!

delayed due to a large abundance of projects associated with the RNC, but inevitable...money is there.

City Planning Commission adopts new plan for East Side lakefront greenway

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city's Planning Commission on Friday voted unanimously to adopt a plan for an East Side lakefront greenway loop with new connections to neighborhoods.

Proponents characterized the plan as "unsexy" and "meat and potatoes," but also as pragmatic and achievable.

"We wanted something that could be built in our lifetimes, or at least our work lifetimes, and not so expensive that it couldn't be built," said Bobbi Reichtell, executive director of Campus District Inc., one of the community development organizations that led the study.

Nothing wrong with it, but "meat and potatoes" is an odd way to describe a greenway loop.

Good news, though I'll undoubtedly be thinking of this the next time I'm swimming:

The lingering challenge is the western portion of the site, which includes a long boat slip where dirt laced with an industrial legacy swirls into the Cuyahoga River. Contaminated sediments at the far end of the old channel cause tumors in fish.

anyone else seen the two massive new LIEBHERR cranes being set up at the Port for loading & unloading...  very impressive

take a pic!

They were facing the other way this morning.  Typically there is a large crawler or two sitting on opposite sides of this port for unloading ships

Here is a far-away view.  It was cool the other day, they had about 3 ships in port

Thanks! I work on the 18th floor of the EY tower and can confirm those have been there for about two weeks now. They are also building something over on that side of the port (potentially another warehouse, I think)

From today.  Caught some rowers in the background too!
