I signed a lease for the house pictured below as a place to live when I graduate next month and look for a career.

It used to be a two-room school house, with the garage still having the original wood floors and a chalk board. Next door is an abandoned church/chapel. The back yard includes the remnants of the Hocking Canal, the former Col. & O. railroad (now the Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad www.HVSRy.org), and the Hocking River. The property extends to the hills and a soy bean farmer rents a portion of the property.

The house is located right on US 33 in Hocking County, between Haydenville and Nelsonville.

I'll be moving in March so I'll get some pictures of the inside details soon.

Congrats!  I invision one grand entry and some ultra fab landscapping with lighting.  A tier pergola on the right side of the house.  I'm all excited.

Talk about a change in scenery!

Nice, have you gone inside the abandoned church?

Where's the Starbucks? ;)

I look inside the church, most of the wood floor was caved in, with remnants of the alter/podium still present. It is cleaner then you would expect, mostly dust, on the inside. There looked to be a table with old antiques/paint can, but I'm going to wait until someone else is with me to venture inside. The building looks very unstable and has tree branches growing through the roof, but appears to have very little human damage since it became abandoned.

When do the trains come through? I'd be really annoyed if it was 4 in the morning. Nice house though.

They only run twice in the afternoon on weekends + Memorial & Labor Days

Nice! Attractive property in a gorgeous setting, should be splendid in the warm seasons and especially so in fall. I'll expect some train photos when the season opens. :-)

My dad's ancestors settled in the Nelsonville area some time before the Civil War, before some of them split off and headed for Indiana. I don't know if any of them are still in the area.
