Donshon Wilson picked up his ringing phone on the morning of Monday, Jan. 28, and heard an excited voice on the line.

"You've got to get to the treasurer's office right away," an East Cleveland school administrator said.

No sooner had he hung up the phone when it rang again. By the third call, the Shaw High School Marching Band director decided to see what was wrong.

I'm glad they keep reposting this information.  Shaw High has the flyest marching band in metro Cleveland have had so for years, atleast the early 80s.

to put this in perspective, here is the first article:

Sometimes, at the beginning of another practice for Shaw High School's marching band, director Donshon Wilson stands in front of his students and just stares at them.

They stand, too, silent and still. Waiting.

Usually, one of them will finally ask, "Why are you staring at us, Mr. Wilson?"

They know the answer, but they want to hear it again.

"Because you made it," he tells them. "You aren't out there doing drugs. You aren't out there with the gangs. You came here to play music, to be a part of this band."

She may think I'm ill-tempered, but kudos to Connie Schultz on this great article:

Ummm... why would connie schultz think you are ill-tempered? Inquiring minds have to know.

On a related note... this has been a great story.

Having come from a poorer background, I can testify to the life-changing experience this trip will be for these kids. For most of them, it's not likely that they often get to travel, much less abroad. I *still* vividly remember my first band trip - to NYC and I can only imagine how amazing this will be for them.  :-)

Agreed.  Really a feel good story that beats anything I've read in a long time

What a great story and one I could see the national media picking up.

any takers, M2S?

We all think you're ill-tempered.

Fair enough!

This is a great story, and we should be proud of these kids and how generous our community can be.

I think I am going to start by forwarding this story to some blogs that I read. I've know people in the Shaw Marching Band and like MayDay said, this experience will be great for them!

^ Well here it is, from tonight's NBC Nightly News:

I also emailed NBC with a link to the story and suggested that they air it during the broadcasts in Cleveland this past week. Nice to see they were moved by this story as well.
