Posted February 16, 200817 yr Although it wasn't the nicest of days, weather wise, I really enjoyed myself. I didn't take pictures of everything that I saw because I was too busy looking around. The trip to Cleveland was amazing. I plan on moving to Cleveland after I graduate from college.
February 16, 200817 yr We'd be glad to have you here! Welcome, and nice pics! BTW, note that there were still leaves on the trees on Nov. 21! When I was a kid in the 1970s, the leaves were usually gone by Halloween. How do I remember? Because of the pictures my parents of my sister and I in costume -- you can the bare trees in the background. But, as I often do, I digress. February 16, 200817 yr Digressor. Nice pics, Andrew. You chose some interesting subject matter. Where are you moving from?
February 16, 200817 yr Thanks I am a senior in high school in Mansfield and I start at Kent State in the fall. After I graduate from Kent, I would like to move to Cleveland.
February 16, 200817 yr It's good to hear that you are interested in moving into Cleveland. I'm currently a senior at a small university in Wisconsin, and am also hoping to move back to Cleveland after I graduate. A lot of the pictures you took really help to emphasis some of the progress being made in Cleveland right now. I think that it exemplifies the type of environment that many college students would like to find themselves in after they graduate.
February 16, 200817 yr Interesting shots! I wish someone would restore the beautiful old B&O station
February 16, 200817 yr dang it! I confused the Fire fighters museum with this! As emily would say, "nevermind".
February 17, 200817 yr Thanks I am a senior in high school in Mansfield and I start at Kent State in the fall. After I graduate from Kent, I would like to move to Cleveland. Andrew, I went to Kent State from 1985-89 -- a great time to be in college. Great music, relatively peaceful times in the world and a pretty decent national economy. I don't want to say it's a bad world now, but it sure is different -- in such a short period of time. 20 years goes so fast the older you get! I had a hard time concentrating on studying urban geography and transportation at a big school like Kent (way too many parties and fun), so I ended up getting my bachelors degree at a smaller school in downtown Cleveland. It was called Dyke College (no macho women jokes, OK!), but has fallen on hard times as Myers College. Yet being downtown deepened my love for cities -- it was Cleveland that taught me to love the good and bad in cities. The variety of cities. The organic biology of cities. Just in case you aren't aware, there is a physical and educational linkage between KSU and Cleveland. KSU runs weekday bus service from Kent to downtown Cleveland (http://www.partaonline.org/pdfs/Cleveland_Express.pdf). And Kent has its Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative http://www.cudc.kent.edu/ in one of my favorite parts of downtown (the Gateway district). Are you committed to KSU? Or have you considered Cleveland State University? They have dorms there and you can live downtown. I don't know if you're interested in CSU's urban studies program, but it's one of the best in the country according to some rankings. What do you want to major in? I'm sure you've heard it before -- your desired major at this stage of your life may differ from your actual major by the time you graduate. You learn as much about yourself in college as you do about your coursework. So be flexible and be ready to explore for yourself. What came before college was for your parents. This will be for yourself, and it can be one of the best times in your life. February 17, 200817 yr KJP- Yeah, I know about the buses and the Urban Collaborative. Those are some of the reasons why I choose KSU. I plan to major in architecture and when I go for my masters I want to go through the graduate program at the CUDC. lol. If architecture doesn't pan out, my fall backs are urban planning or journalism. Thanks.
February 17, 200817 yr Cool. I took an architecture course at KSU but hated math (I loved drafting in high school). I also took one journalism course in college. Guess what I've been doing the past 14 years?!?! Yep, newspaper reporter. :-) But I wrote for newsletters for seven years before I got hired by Sun Newspapers in 1993. I rose through the ranks and am now the chain's only Cleveland City Hall beat reporter. If someone told me when I started at KSU in 1985 that this is what I'd be doing now, I would have told them they're crazy. February 17, 200817 yr This one is great...I love how the color of the trees compliments the white bridge behind it. Very nice. +1 for Cleveland pop.
February 19, 200817 yr Cleveland should be in one of those music videos by those industrial European trance DJ's with singing psychotic ragdolls (aka Bjork). "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 19, 200817 yr I can't wait for The Flats' revitalization. It'll be so great to see some life down there. But I also love the look of those old, industrial buildings. Enjoy your move, andrew.
February 21, 200817 yr I can't wait for The Flats' revitalization. It'll be so great to see some life down there. But I also love the look of those old, industrial buildings. Enjoy your move, andrew. I was thinking the same thing. If Cleveland could redevelop the flats, combined with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Science Center, they could have quite a dynamic waterfront. Imagine if Cincinnati gets the Banks developed, and Cleveland gets the Flats going again, Ohio would have two of the best waterfronts in the US!
February 21, 200817 yr ^ The flats are in the process of being redeveloped: http://www.forumarc.com/portfolio/flatseastbank/feb1.html http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3883.750.html http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,1823.1410.html
December 31, 201014 yr As we approach the fourth year from when these pictures were taken, it'll be interesting to watch how much here will change in the coming four years. As of now, some of these Flats streetscapes are the same, in fact the area in the first 5 pictures is even worse but of course i understand that is due to the stalled FEB project. How I long though for the original buildings on Old River Rd. btw, Good photos Andrew.
