He found it here in Montauk. 3 times the size of his Miami Beach, almost entirely undeveloped, it was to be the culmination of his life's work. He bought all 10,000 acres in 1925, for the relatively modest sum of $ 2,500,000.00. He estimated it would take another $ 7,000,000.00 to build it. "Miami in the Winter, Montauk in the Summer", was Fisher's slogan. He would provide the elite who had flocked to his Miami Beach, with a comparably exclusive summer resort just hours from the social centers of New York, and Newport. .....Fisher had planned for everything, everything that is, except the Great Depression.” indiana’s carl fisher, what a character -- read all about him here: http://www.montauklife.com/history/fisher.htm up on the long island sound -- here is fisher’s star island marina across the former lake montauk my last pics -- hither hills state park beach in winter http://www.nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=48 *bonus -- some stuff we breezed by or missed: the formation of the deep hollow ranch spelled the end for the montaukett Indians on montauk. deep hollow ranch is america’s oldest cattle ranch -- now a riding academy. ranching continued out here from 1658 until the 1950’s. http://www.deephollowranch.com/history.htm second house museum – a 1746 herder’s farmhouse (first house is long gone) http://www.montauklighthouse.com/second_house.htm third house (1747, rebuilt 1803) -- also a herder's house best noted as the camp teddy roosevelt & the rough riders recouperated in after the Spanish-american war and lastly --- yeah, yeah i know it’s not saying much to west coast surfers --- but "ditch plains" is known as the home of the best surfing on the eastern seaboard much more travel/history info about montauk in this comprehensive nytimes article: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE6D61131F934A1575BC0A96F948260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=1 *** a bunch 'o wintertime tours of the historic & chi-chi towns of “the hamptons” coming up next ***

John Dayton ,who had limited troops at his disposal, feigned that he had more by walking them back and forth across a hill turning their coats inside out to make it look like there more of them (a tactic referred to as Dayton's Ruse). The British would not formally attack Long Island until 1776." the very john dayton who later founded dayton, ohio.
