Rotterdam, Netherlands

2nd largest city in Holland

Population 590,000

The aftermath of the destruction of WWII is highly evident in this city--feels more American because of it.

Rotterdam really blew me away when I was there last spring in its modernity - WWII really decimated parts of it, and therefore it is a rather Americanized city - cars, wide streets, modern architecture, and fat people.

No joke, when compared to the Hague & certainly Amsterdam, the people in Rotterdam were porkers!

Some parts of it seem American, but others do not.

I did appreciate the buildings with the older architecture instead of the modern.

I think, unfortunately, much of Europe has American influence. It's such a homogenization of European culture, I think.

When I was in Poland visiting family several years ago, you could see the Americanization all over the place .. from shopping malls to McDonald's. I wanted to throw up.

I would love to visit The Netherlands, though. Looks like an amazingly beautiful country.

Great photos!

Nice!

Rotterdam is probably my least favorite city in the Netherlands, only because it is so new and doesn't seem very Dutch.  The new architecture is stunning, but the old stuff is pretty mediocre.  I used to live about 20 miles east on the river, so went there pretty often.

The Hague is nice, and was fairly untouched by WWII.  Parliament is there, but it isn't the capital, for some constitutional reason.  The queen still has two palaces in the Hague, Huis ten Bosch and Paleis Noordeinde.

Guess it's time for a trip....thanks for the inspiration!

Fantastic.
