Mud Hens snag catchy 'Walleye' as moniker for hockey franchise

By JOE VARDON

As it turned out, the Toledo Mud Hens reeled in a team name for the city's professional hockey franchise a long time ago. But they're still fishing for something to call the arena football team.

Walleye, a moniker the Mud Hens first sought through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in May of 2005, will be announced as the mascot for pro hockey in Toledo at an 11 a.m. news conference today.

The other name the Hens pursued trademark rights for - Woodpeckers - will not be attached to the city's future arena football franchise, officials said.

They registered Peckers and Peckerheads and only realized the "potential" negative implications later?  OK, I think someone has a sense of humor.

What league is the new hockey team going to be a part of?

Mudhens, Walleye's, Peckerheads, wtf is next??? Truckstop Bangers?

I think the Walleyes would be in the ECHL (East Coast Hockey league).

Given some of the nicknames and mascots created in recent years, this is actually pretty good.

The missing tooth is a nice touch.

I went looking for some game day photos of Toledo's 'Don Cherry jersey night'.  This was the best I could find:

But that wasn't the weirdest jersey promo the Walleye pulled off.  While searching for the Don Cherry night, I found this Batman vs. The Joker jersey promo from a previous season:

And both teams donned the costumes, err, jerseys:

The Walleye also had this 'Ugly Christmas Sweater' jersey:

I remember ECHL hockey when the Columbus Chill played in the 90's.  It's still a league where no promotion is too strange.  But it's also a very entertaining brand of hockey.

For all the off-the-wall Toledo Walleye jerseys, their standard jerseys look really good.  Below are their current home, away and alternate jerseys:

Those are all alternates from the outdoor games (two home games and a alumni game against Fort Wayne) at Fifth Third Field in 2014-15.

These are the standard home and away:

And the alternates they wear the most:

Though I would say they've worn about 50 different jerseys

Ah, okay.  Thanks for the correction.

The green jersey with its retro logo is one of the best ever.

^Agreed. It looks fantastic.
