Franklin County Commissioners Primary

Lazarus, O'Grady target economy, development

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Democratic rivals Cindy Lazarus and John O'Grady had plenty to say last night, only not to each other. The two spoke before the Southwestern Democratic Committee at Jackson Township's municipal building. They answered questions that ranged from polite to piercing, but they didn't converse with each other.

That will change Friday, when the Columbus Metropolitan Club hosts a debate between the Democratic primary contenders for the seat held by Franklin County Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy.

O'Grady, 43 and the county's Common Pleas clerk of courts, has the county party's endorsement. Lazarus, 61 and a former judge and Columbus City Council president, is running a grass-roots campaign.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

John O'Grady is well ahead of rival Cindy Lazarus in fund-raising for the March 4 Democratic primary for Franklin County commissioner, campaign-finance reports filed yesterday show.

O'Grady, the endorsed candidate, had $236,650 to spend this period, or more than three times the $75,812 for Lazarus. Since a previous filing earlier this month he raised $79,260 in new money; she raised $9,415.

But O'Grady said he's not celebrating with a dozen days left before the election: "Absolutely not. This is going to be one hard-fought race."

He called her "Mrs. Lazarus." She called John O'Grady on the carpet.

"You can call me 'Cindy,' really you can, John," the 61-year-old Democrat told her endorsed 43-year-old rival.

The dueling Democrats tried to sell 350 people at a Columbus Metropolitan Club debate on their qualifications to be the next Franklin County commissioner.

Franklin County commissioner: Democrat O'Grady, Miller to face off in the fall

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

By Barbara Carmen, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

John O'Grady, tired and hoarse, celebrated a hard-fought win against Cindy Lazarus in the Democratic primary for Franklin County commissioner last night. But he vowed to get up this morning and start campaigning all over again.

"I'm going to sleep a little bit, and then we're going to be right back at this thing," O'Grady said. "I don't believe in taking time off. We're going to run real hard against Jeff Miller."

Like Miller, the victor in the Republican primary, O'Grady ran with his party's endorsement. Both cited that support, and the contributions and backing it brought, as key to their wins.
