Did you participate in a varsity sports in High School or College?

My fiance's dad went to St. John back in the day, led their first ever baseball team to the state championship his sophomore year.  I hear their sports have taken a tumble in recent years, kind of like the H/S I went to, sad to see.  (By the way, I hear all about Urban Meyer and how he went to St. John every time his face is on TV when I'm over their house. :) )

^Back in the 70's and early 80's, ASJ's enrollment was well over 500 (I know, wow) compare that to the 120 in my grad year of 95 (co-ed) and it's been hovering around 100-120 ever since. It's no surprise that the athletics have struggled big-time as a whole (girls volleyball and boys baseball have been consistent exceptions). Sts John & Paul (as its known now) is still one of the smallest schools in the state that plays football. When I played there, Painesville Riverside and Madison were both still on the schedule (NEC) and they were D1 with 100+ kids on the roster while we suited up 35 (including freshmen). We could hang with those guys for a half or 3 qtrs or so, but eventually get worn down. We had some really talented baseball teams that could play with anybody.

In the end, Ashtabula has fallen victim to the same economic forces that have swept the rest of the country; good blue-collar jobs moving overseas or just eliminated, leaving families to relocate or take lesser-paying jobs that make it very difficult to afford Catholic-school tuition.

Just curious, what's your fiance's dad's name?

4 years varsity tennis.  Go Raiders.

Check your PM, I figure the rest of the forum may not be interested. :)

EDIT: Let me know if you didn't receive the PM, I haven't received replies to my last couple and nothing is showing in my Outbox (don't know if that is meant for Sent or Pending) so I'm not sure if my PM's are working correctly.

Varsity tennis 3 years at good ole' SCD.

Does SCD stand for Summit Country Day?

yep

My aunt's kids went there, my cousins.  It's a very, nice, $$chool.  None of them played sports, but I've never ran into anyone who went there.  I thought they graduated and all become Lawyers/Doctors and stayed in the SCD crowd.  No offense to you, but it is a very, very, very exclusive school.

Varsity Tennis for 3 years (didn't tryout or play Freshman year...didn't care).  I played #1 doubles and sometimes #3 singles...I was on one of the best true doubles teams in the state (meaning not the teaming up of a #1 and #2 player).

My school team (Oak Hills) was ranked in the Top 10 in state just about all 3 years...but also 3rd in the GMC.  Killer competition with schools like Sycamore, Princeton, and Lakota West.  But we all know SW Ohio is the Tennis powerhouse...St. Xavier, Kings, Indian Hill, Sycamore, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Walnut Hills, etc...

I also played some basketball in my day before I quit trying out and started playing in rec leagues only with my friends.  Screw all that serious practice, running, and degredation.

This is definitely true.  The Cincinnati region is definitely the best place in Ohio, and probably one of the best in the nation when it comes to both girls and guys tennis.  Division 1 has Princeton, Sycamore, Oak Hills, St. X, and Turpin.  Dvision 2 has Seven Hills, CHCA, Summit (girls team got second in states last year, and had the first singles champ this yr), CCD, Indian Hill, Kings, and Mason.  It's also one of the few sports where division two can almost always hang with division one (Lacrosse probably being the other sport).

I was a band geek. A tuba player at that. Ahhh the ladies fell at my feet with just the few notes of a soulful oompa-pah.

Given that I'm 6'6" all of this infuriated my gym teacher for some reason. I guess there's some arcane law in NY that says tall people must be athletic.

lol.  I was a "shop" freak, although I have all my fingers.  Power tools rock!

Although nobody was falling at my feet, I felt the same way in Junior High and High School.  It's like some ridiculous right of passage that tall people are obligated to play basketball.  The funny thing is I'm one of the shortest people on my mothers side of the family.

Not that you should have been forced to play basketball, but you should have at least given your height to me.

oh...I'm 6'4"

Same with me. On my mom's side I have two cousins that have me by 2-3 inches. One played ball for St. Joe's. His sister is one inch shorter than me and played center for Villanova.

The women in my mom's side or "women of Themyscira" as my father calls them, are tall.  My Great GrandMother and , Grandmother, are both 6'4".  My grandfather is 6'4" as well but he is the tallest in his family.  My mom says she 5'11" but, now that I think about it, she is probably taller than that.  Maybe it's the 4" heels  :|

All of my female cousins are at least 6'2" tall, with one exception, and played volleyball and basketball and most excelled in softball.

My mothers older sister is 6'4" her husband 6'5" their kids are 6'2, 6'4", 6'7 & 6'8.  The kids at Heights nicknamed my cousins "the twin towers" - it stuck all through Ohio State.

The funny thing is, from 4 y/o to 11 y/o I grew really fast at the same time, my brother growth was stunted.  In fourth grade I was 6'0" [it a horrible feeling to be taller than your teacher and the same size as your father] and all my cousins were all "regular" size and my brother so small.

At one point my brother and I were so disproportionate in size, people that a) he was a pint-sized midget or b) I was autistic (I skipped everywhere as a kid)  c) he and I both suffered from a birth defect.  I didn't grow again until my Sophomore year in High School and by that time all my male cousins were as tall or taller than me.

I think the tallest guy on our basketball team was 6' 4", and one of our offensive tackles, who also wrestled heavyweight, was 6' 7" (and relatively thin).

Of course this was Maple Heights, just after the Mike Milkovich era.

Little known fact:  Ted Diadun (sic?), currently the reader rep for the PeeDee, was successfully sued by Mike Milkovich in a case that made it to the US Supreme Court three times before it was finally decided.  It turns out if you state someone is guilty of a crime, it doesn't matter if you are writing an "opinion" piece.

The case is referenced on occasion and is called "the Milkovich decision".  It's always struck me as funny that a precedental Supreme Court decision regarding free speech vs. slander is named after a guy rumored to have graded term papers by weighing them.

DB and MTS play rock, paper, scissors!

I was too skinny in high school, and suffered a total lack of coordination.  Was tall and geeky and painfully shy. In college just did stuff on my own...speed skating, weight lifting and cycling, but never with the schools.  Am still not much on organized team sports, and don't even enjoy watching them.  Gave up weight lifting years ago, and have only distant memories of a good body. I was the stereotypical kid no one would pick for their team.  In retrospect I can't really blame them!

Same here... it's okay though, it's not like that kind of rejection scarred my psyche or anything...

You probably kept trying to get them to follow the rules!!!!

I knew better than that - I was 4'9" until my junior year of high school!

Mini MayDay

How tall are you now?

I knew better than that - I was 4'9" until my junior year of high school!

That's insane. How old were you when your growth spurt ended? I think most people stop around 18-19 so that means you grew an entire foot in just a year or two.

Oh and to answer the question, I never played sports in school, I moved around a lot; I've been to over 20 schools. I did play basketball a lot and still do a little bit and I'm quite good. I have speed but not so much endurance so I sucked at sports like Soccer in gym class. I used to lift weights in Highschool, I did a lot of deadlifts, squats and calve raises and reached a point where I could slam dunk but I can't do it anymore.

I ran track my freshman year of HS but I gave it up because I constantly was getting shin splints.

I spent all 4 years of my HS experience involved with my school's band program (concert, marching, jazz, pep). Though techincally not a sport, during my marching days we won 2 state titles and competed on a national level every year finishing in the top 25 bands in the entire country twice (second overall in our class nationally two times as well).

Hanging out at the grand nationals? Nerd!

I played football in high school.  Left guard and defensive end.  I didn't become first string until the second half of my senior season

yay sports.

i played football all of jhs and hs. we were pretty good, we were even ranked #1 above the infamous parochial school cinci moeller machine for awhile during the season in my senior year, but we fell off by the end.

i ran track soph/jr years. i love track more than any other sport and would have done it my senior year too, but who knew i had asthma back then? -- i found out in college & still use a pump today.

i played church basketball in hs, but hurt my knee so that ended that.

in college i played intermural flag football and ref'd it too.

since back then i go to the gym pretty regularly and sometimes take a yoga class or something, but no organized sports. as for gyms i have to say i really liked all the ymca's in columbus. here in ny i went to the rec  centers & the printing house gym for awhile. nowadays i belong to the nysportsclub gym like most everyone else.

I was a member of the Height High, High Performance track team.  We ruled Ohio Track and Field in the 80s!!!  I went to state in multiple events three years in a row.

Ran at Ohio State as well.  The worst four years of my track and field life.  Although I did earn All-American honors in my Junior and Senior years.

Being a part of a large family (I have 31 first cousins) and all the kids, but me, were involved in sports in High School and most in College.  I did get up enough nerve to play Volleyball my junior & senior year in college.  It felt comfortable as all the tall dorks who didn’t play basketball played Volleyball.

Didn't you run track at Shaker?  I could have sworn you did the High Jump.  :?

Baseball all through high school...but just wasn't quite good enough to cut it at the college level.  Probably could have played at a school smaller than OSU--oh well, we'll never kknow. :|

lol.  I was a "shop" freak, although I have all my fingers.  Power tools rock!

But... But... where ever did you find a designer-label shop apron? :?  The only ones I could get were plain dark blue denim. Nevertheless, they were one hundred per cent cotton.

Gawd....I hate that you know my family!! :-D    You people at Heights and your f'n track team.  You guys were so obnoxious.  And that mean a$$ coach you all had - he was crazy!!

Yes I did the stupid high jump!  OK.  I was trying to forget that.  ugh!! My cousins got on my last nerves and talked to much sh*t so I decided not to participate after the season.

Yes, you

LMAO.  Designer clothes have their place, just not in the shop room.  Home economics, yes.  Shop NO!!

Unfortunately I was too busy working at Frischs Big Boy to play any sports  :-P. I was probably too short anyway...boy it would be nice to get a growth spurt sometime soon.

Did you go to h/s in a foreign country?

  • 9 months later...

Went to benedictine and played varsity hockey all 4 years

JV soccer freshman year

JV baseball sophmore year

Club rugby junior year for Mayfield High School

Couldnt get a scholarship anywhere for hockey since i wasnt tall enough, i was in the 5'7 range and every scout pretty much told me regardless of skill they were looking at people 6' or taller. Nothing like being turned down for reasons not even in your control. I probably could have played club hockey at arizona state but decided partying was a little bit more important at the time.

But i still play in mens hockey leagues and indoor soccer seasons year round.

Awww.  You "short", "little" or "vertically challenged" serve a purpose.  You're good for reaching into lower level cabinets and bins.

Or making Willy Wonka Scrumdiddlyuptious chocolate bars.

Or...

I ran Track and Cross Country my Freshman and Sophomore years of high school.

Three sport letterman in football, basketball, and track in high school...played summer baseball (Medina Buckeye)...went on to letter in track at Kent State, then transferred to the University of Akron and played football and ran track.

I ran cross country and track for Mentor for all four years of high school.  I think we beat the Heights teams a few times

Went on to do cross country and track just for my freshman year at the University of Akron as well!

JDD941, when did you do track for Akron and what events did you do?

Sounds like the early 00's.  I don't ever recall Heights being beat in the region in the Dick Mann era, which spaned the mid 70's to the late 90's.  Although, like the browns Heights would choke at state.  I loved giving my cousins hell about that.  he he he

Yeah...I was on the team track team from '97 to '00.  Being that we were both in the LEL we had dual meets just about every year.  Heights was always our biggest rivals and the meets were intense.  Mentor would clean up on most of the field and distance events while Heights would dominate the 100 up to the 800.

Now competing as a team in track at the state level was a whole different ball game.  It had more to do with individuals than team.  With the exception of my senior year, we never competed that well at the state level because we didn't have that many outstanding individuals.

I forgot to mention - in addition to getting into fights, I could run really fast. That's an important skill to have when things start to not go as planned.

I never participated in track, but the one thing I could do well in phys ed was outrun some of the guys who were on the track team. Long legs for my height and 125 lbs, and sometimes it was exhilarating to just cut loose and go.

I played water polo, but an unfortunate accident forced me to quit.
