I know that probably not everyone here has a camera (or at least many people with cameras are not posting any pictures), but obviously many people do.  So what are people using?

My digital camera is a Fujifilm FinePix S5100--4 megapixels with a 10x optical zoom.  It's a top seller at B&H, so I wouldn't be terribly surprised if I've got the same one as someone else.  (Before this camera I had a crappier one, which my parents lost.)

I've also got a film SLR whose scanned pictures I sometimes use here.  It's a Canon EOS Elan 7E (something like that).  With it I have a 50mm f/1.8 lens as well as a telephoto zoom lens and a cheap wide angle zoom lens.

Bingo ;).

cannon powershot elph sd300. its 4 megapixels (around $300 from b&h).

ts fine but its credit card sized small --- so the wrist strap has saved me from dropping it.

Mostly now I use a Nikon D70 w/ 18-70mm Nikkor zoom.

The oldest stuff I've posted was shot with a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex 35mm SLR, vintage 1962. A lot of my archive threads were shot with a Nikon FM 35mm SLR, and some were done with a Rolleiflex f/2.8 TLR. I still use the Rollei and a Mamiya 7 (120 roll film) for critical print work.

I use a Minolta X-370 SLR and a Cannon Sure shot point-and-shoot.

i have an olympus d560, 3x zoom and 3.2 mega pixel. can easily be put into a pocket

Same as ColDay.

Fuji Finepix s5100

I also have a wide angle lense.

I have the Panasonic Lumix FZ5 like monte's FZ20 but minus a few things...  most noticeably it has a built in flash.

Cool, so there are three of us so far with that Fujifilm S5100.  The rest of you should get on the bandwagon!

My first digital camera . .  a Nikon Coolpix 4200 4.0 megapixels.  I'd like to upgrade eventually . . .

Canon Powershot A310 with 3.2 megapixels and 5.1 digital (crappy) zoom.

Hey Pigboy, the camera I use at work is a FujuFilm S5000 series, too.  It's the 6 megapixel version.

Currently I have an older Minolta X-7A with a 50 mm and a Pentavision Macro.  My zoom and close up were stolen a while back.  I am also borrowing a 4 megapixel Olympus pocket camera from a friend who doesn't ever use it.

> Nikon D70 - we are not worthy.  Sounds like you have Urban Ohio's top equipment.

I win.  I've got a D70 with 12-24 f/4, 180 f/2.8., 50 f/1.8, SB-800 flash, a Hasselblad, lights, umbrellas, etc.

Here's the 12mm in action last weekend:

I've also in the past owned a Canon AE-1 program, Canon Elan II, a Nikon FM-3a, another Hasselblad, and three Contax T3 point-and-shoots, one of which was stolen, another was destroyed by a bleeding Iggy Pop impersonator, and the last one I sold on Ebay awhile back.

The Elan II and Elan 7 were/are great cameras, you can pick them up super cheap used these days.  Also, the 50mm f/1.8 is both the cheapest and more or less the best lenses that either Canon or Nikon makes.  The 50's have virtually no corner distortion, best contrast, the sharpest resolution, and they're both under $100.  BTW by the end of 2005 I'm predicting you'll be able to pick up a used D70 and a lens on Ebay for under $500 if you can't already.

My birthday was yesterday, and my lovely wife got me a Konica Minolta Maxxum 70 35mm SLR Camera with 28-100mm Lens.  I've never had a real film camera, and know very little about it - I'm planning to buy film tonight and play with it tomorrow in and around Eden Park.  Anyone familiar with this camera, or any general advice on running a film camera?

Congrats RiverViewer although I can't imagine paying for film anymore.

Jake, you are a camera junky!

i break this baby out occassionaly, pretty much only for B&W shoots, I just don't like the way my digital camera takes B&W and the lack of grainyness

+1 for Fuji FinePix S5100.  (Got it about 2 months ago and am loving it, a great camera.  Everyone thinks its an SLR though.)

But I havn't posted any of mine yet.  I've got quite a few, but I'm waiting for a better internet connection.

Soon as Cinergy gets their asses in gear on installing Current on my street, I'll be posting them for sure.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Uncle Sam and Ms. Sallie Mae for their continued support.

On your next trip to NYC visit that store.  It's pretty mind-blowing.

Yeah digital black and white blows.  There really isn't any money in black and white which is why manufacturers haven't put any energy into it.  It's going to be some time before digital b&w doesn't look digital.  And nothing digital is going to match 4X5's basically ever, and there's nothing affordable that can match medium format right now.

Hey, on the advice of several posters I just bought a Fuji Finepix S5100 and so far it looks great.

I'm a photo novice and have a couple of questions about accessories:

1) What kind of filter to use? Someone recommended a Hoya 55m Multi-Coated, but I'm not sure exactly which of those to buy -- there are dozens of options.

2) What kind of rechargeable batteries?

3) What's a good camera bag for this model?

Thanks!

Is this a digital or film camera?

It's digital.

A Google Images search could have answered that one for you in 1/2 a second.

Yeah, but that would of required me to leave the urbanohio board, go to google, actually think about going to either images or websites, remember what to type in the description, then decide which thumbnail to get a closer view of. And who knows which detours, if any I would of encountered along the way.

He knows his camera and I can wait (or now, waited) for his response (already given).

And who knows which detours, if any I would of encountered along the way.

Probably road construction.  There's always road construction!  Anyway, I'm not sure about the other people who mentioned that particular camera, but my post did specifically refer to the model as a digital camera.  Minus two points for not paying attention! :bang2:

In any case, I can't really give the requested advice on it.  I don't have a filter (perhaps I should), and the bag I use is the same backpack that holds all my other camera crap.  I don't know much about rechargeable batteries; I just bought some Energizer ones I saw at Best Buy.  They seem to work pretty well, though the charger sometimes lies about being finished.

Get a filter and put it on there but in my opinion don't worry too much about its quality unless you're going to be making big prints.  I think with filters in 95% of situations it's not going to make a difference what brand you have on there and it's not going to matter unless you're making 16X20 prints.  You can correct almost every problem adequately on photoshop and a cheap filter is more often just going to exaggerate an unfixable problem than make the difference between a problem being fixable and unfixable.  I think with film cameras filter quality matters more, esp when shooting slides, because problems cannot be solved as easily.  There is definitely an improvement in image quality when comparing old uncoated lenses (pre-1980's) and modern coated lenses but I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes with filters.  A lot of this improvement has to do with a lens's ability to deal with flare caused by light sources or reflections either in the image or just outside the frame.  Flair reduces contrast and low-contrast images are rarely preferable to high contrast ones.  Lens hoods also reduce flair and you should keep yours on all of the time.  Also the rise of coated lenses and filters happened as color film became more popular and of higher quality.  Color accuracy is improved with coated lenses, but again, since nearly everything can be corrected on photoshop the argument for buying coated filters weakens.

>For a good camera bag, I love my Kenneth Cole Reaction bag I bought at Best Buy.

I bought my bag hot so I got about 70% off retail.

Okay I have browsed through, but not been able to make any decisions. Again the old question has come up as to what I want for Christmas and again I have no response. Last year was a nightmare Christmas morning when my parents were left to guess. It was a nice gift, but I really didn't have a huge use for it. So anyway, I was thinking of asking for an new digital camera.

I want something around the $300 range, but may go higher. I'm not interested in landscapes, but maybe the occational cityscape. I defiently want something I can use at night and get a quality result. Nothing too fancy and would prefer something small, but if I have to go bulky for results, okay.  I'm not into the artistic photography, but want a product that can be published and represent the subject clearly. Anyone know about Kodaks?

Well, the four billion of us here with that same Fuji camera can't be wrong.  It's ColDayMan approved, so it must be good! :-)

YA DAMN RIGHT!!

Well ...the old fuji digital camera I had(2mp) sucked, but the newer fuji's are pretty good as colday has shown.

I've been thinking about selling my digital rebel because I never use it.  I'd take the money and buy something smaller and for everyday use.

...ahem...*pass it this way!*

Where can you buy that Fuji in the Cincy-Dayton Metro?

  • 8 months later...

Hey, all.  Native Daytonian here(Grew up mostly on Huffman Ave.).  Currently live in Lafayette, LA.  I've been browsing the site for some time, and am finally ready to become a contributor, as I just got a new camera, a Canon Powershot S3.  Hope you guys like bayou pics!

12x optical frickin' zoom!  Hope we like close-up bayou pics!  Very nice...I'm jealous...

Nikon just introduced the D80. Same 10.2 megapixel resolution as the D200.

MSRP is $999 body-only, $1,299 with 18-135mm Nikkor lens . It's makin' me all fidgety.

I'm eyeing the Canon Powershot A620 - 7.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, and only $221 from Amazon.  My current Canon A60 has been a great machine for two years, but I beat the hell out of it - I've dropped it, left it to bake in the car, etc.  Now it gets lines in low light, and I can't stand the dropped pixels in low light...I figure I'll keep carrying that one with me for shots around town, then actually take care of the new one.  Plus, I love the video functions, and want my next camera to still fit in the camera holder I put in my car, so I can use it for http://www.CincinnatiRoads.com (now with some Mt. Adams streets!)...

help i need reviewers and opinions.

right now i have the mini-canon digital powershot elph sd300.

i am pretty sure the updated Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is going to be my new camera when it comes out in september ($499@B&H).

what do you all think about that one?

This thread is ancient!!!!

Anyway, I have a Canon t1i but am thinking about going full frame with at least one L quality lens.

Wow - it sure is.  I'm using a Nikon D7000, but I've also been thinking of going full frame.  I might get a D610.
