With all the snow and ice, here are some pictures from a couple of weeks ago from my trip to Sanibel to help you with some nice, warm thoughts.

Sanibel Island, Florida

  • Sanibel Island is an island located on the Gulf coast of Florida, just offshore of Fort Myers.
  • The city of Sanibel incorporates the entire island, with most of the town proper at the east end of the island.
  • After the causeway was built to replace the ferry in May 1963 the residents fought back against overdevelopment by incorporating the island as a city in 1974.
  • A new, higher bridge without a bascule (drawbridge) having to open for tall boats and sailboats, was completed in late 2007.
  • The 1963 bridge was broken up and dumped offshore to create an artificial reef.

The lighthouse was requested by islanders in 1833, commissioned in 1877, and built in 1884. First lit in August 1884, and manned until 1949. Now, fully automatic, the light shines on to this day.

You can easily get everywhere on the island with a moped and its way more fun than taking a car places on the island

The island is home to many birds, especially in the winter.  The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a 5,200 acre refuge located on the island.

Sanibel is a barrier island – a collection of sand on the leeward side of the Gulf Stream from the more solid coral-rock of Pine Island.

The Gulf side beaches are excellent on both islands, and are world renowned for their variety of seashells, which include coquinas, scallops, whelks, sand dollars, and other deeper-water mollusks, both univalve and bivalve. The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the study of shells.

aww the memories. I used to work on Sanibel. My favorite job was at the SanCap (Sanibel-Captiva Island Bridge) outpost of the Lazy Flamingo. It appears they kept growth under control and the beach looks to be in good condition. The boating and water recreation areas around that region are great. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Beautiful photos. That became one of my Dad's favorite places after my parents retired to Florida. When we went there during one of my visits, I could understand why he loved it so much.

Ah the memories indeed.  Sanibel Island used to by my family's yearly vacation retreat.  First with a camper staying at the campground on the island.  Then to staying in condos.  The island has changed a LOT since I stopped going there 15 years ago from what I've heard.  I wonder if the Bubble Room restaurant is till on Captiva Island, the island just north of Sanibel.  It used to have a tree growing through it.  They have the best desserts.  Storms destroyed most of the old growth and tree lines streets I've heard but I'd still go back.

Cool. I could almost smell the ocean and hear the waves from looking at these.

Jealous!

Very nice! My uncle goes down there a couple times a year to a time share he owns. He's always raving about the place, and now I can see what he's talking about.

Love the picture of the surf crashing up on the rocks.

Also true in many urban areas near you. 90-100 mpg!

I think they are still going strong. The best cake I have ever had. Anyone going to the island should have cake there. the rest of the menu is not as great unless it has changed-to be fair I have not been in years.

Defiently not the type of landscape I'd enjoy, but nice pics!

While looking at this, I forgot about it snowing like crazy outside my window... Beautiful pictures of a gorgeous place.
