Day saw Western Hills as a natural expansion opportunity as many of his west side customers were traveling across town to the Kenwood location to purchase his signature gold box, red-ribboned fine chocolates. Behind the airplane, Esther-Price is Dayton's second best gift to the world.
February 15, 201015 yr Author 3520 Harrison in Cheviot is currently under construction with what looks to be some type of new multi-story infill that is built out to the sidewalk. I will try and get some good pics when our mini ice age ends. August 27, 201014 yr The Good Sam site is a good idea.... too bad they had to strip another Dent hillside... the whole area is going to be bare hills before too long.
August 28, 201014 yr Don't worry, God will get his/her retribution through (sadly) land subsidence. I hope they did their Geotechnical Homework! I don't know if they did as the access road appeared to have slid quite a bit while it was the only thing on site for several years.

They speak of the added bonus of mass parking.......really!?!?! How much of that sea of asphalt is actually needed? Ive never seen this lot even 25% used. Rip it up and just start over. I think the Legacy Place vision would work better here! On a side note, the Western Hills Plaza and the Western Village across the street are now OFFICIALLY 100% OCCUPIED with the addition of a rue21 and Panda Express. Its closest stores are on Bridgetown Road in Cheviot and Colerain Avenue in White Oak. The North Bend corridor is a key location for restaurateurs, said Andrew Sellet, a retail broker with Cassidy Turley who represented Frisch’s in the deal. “It’s a great spot off the highway in a very good market, and it will only get better with the new hospital,” he said.

January 6, 201114 yr Author Some more Westside Shuffle projects that might not make the news Cheviot: Family Dollar is building a new store in Cheviot near the corner of Harrison and Everett. They tore down a couple older structures and are saying that the new construction will blend in and conform with the surrounding neighborhood. We will see. Construction is also set to begin soon for the rebuilding of the Elks Lodge on Harrison that burned down several years back during Hurricane Ike. Green Twp: The Pirates Den has moved into and opened in the former Miss Kitty's location off of Glenway called Cincinnati Marketplace. Champions is still under construction with it's move next door to the Den. Kmart on Harrison is in it's final days. Westwood: A lateral move for the area, however I'm still holding out hope that this block of strip centers is someday torn down to start anew. More and more stores are looking for frontage on Glenway as opposed to the side streets. Many of these side streets boost small business corridors such as Crookshank, Westbourne, Werk, Glen Crossing Way, Ferguson, etc. St. Vincent de Paul has also opened a westside location in the former World Plus space across the street. Hobby Lobby moving into old Target store Posted by kbackscheider 01/05/11, 1:05 pm http://cincinnati.com/blogs/wordonthewestside/2011/01/05/hobby-lobby-moving-into-old-target-store/
January 6, 201114 yr You sure about the Kmart on Harrison is closing? They just announced one in Hamilton is closing but didn't mention this one.

Champions is still under construction with it's move next door to the Den. Kmart on Harrison is in it's final days. Oh, that makes more sense. Last time I was back home someone said Pirates Den had moved into the former Drug Emporium. I was wondering if they removed the flourescent lights. I wonder why Champion's is moving?
January 6, 201114 yr Author The Kmart closing in Dent was announced back in sep or oct I think. The store is due to close in early jan from what I remember. They have a giant "store closing" banner that's been hanging on the outside for several months. It is my understanding that both the Den and Champions left there former locations due to disagreements with the landlord/owners of the former buildings.

It is my understanding that both the Den and Champions left there former locations due to disagreements with the landlord/owners of the former buildings. I think the only K-Mart left in Cincinnati will be the one in Blue Ash, and with the new Target opening down the road I don't see them lasting much longer. With the Target right down the street, and a Wal-Mart a few miles down the road in Evendale.
February 26, 201114 yr ^Correct, but there have been plans for a while for a new Walmart in Harrison on New Haven. Not sure what is going on with this. I think there has been some resistance from the community.
April 25, 201114 yr Looks like another retailer will be vacating Glenway Crossing for Western Hills Plaza. It's ashame really, because community leaders squandered what was valuable rail right-of-way for this cheap and temporary retail development years ago. This could have eventually become the hub of light rail serving the entire westside of Cincinnati. But instead we have this cheap development that has quickly become a shell of its former self. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2011/04/25/michaels-to-open-in-western-hills.html
April 26, 201114 yr The West Side clearly has more retail space than it can support, yet the people get fired up over proposals for new shopping centers. Just imagine if Legacy Place had been built!
April 26, 201114 yr ^maybe one has already been done, but could a hypothetical light rail line be drawn up for this area? I like to daydream, but maybe it could stir things up. The retail shuffle will continue, Glenway Crossing is nearly empty, though Panera Bread is still the THE hangout. ;-) I would like to see a consolidation of all these retail areas.
April 26, 201114 yr Panera, Best Buy and Chipotle clean up in that one successful section of Glenway Crossing, which when I was a kid housed Swallen's. What should happen is the rail right-of-way should be used to get grade separated light rail into the heart of the westside, and turn the former Target/Circuit City area into a large transit-oriented development with apartments and townhouses. Both of these residential offerings are hard to come by on the westside, and I think there is a market there for it. Empty nesters and young people who don't want to leave the westside, but don't really want to buy a house with their best high school buddy, or continue to be immobilized by the westside's dominant auto presence.

Too bad the C&O viaduct from Mill Creek westward was demolished some years ago. There was some feasibility study conducted in the 1970s, IIRC, on light rail. I wonder what the costs were then, compared to now (in rebuilding the viaduct)?
April 26, 201114 yr Author Trace the old C&O line on google maps from Glenway Crossing to Bridgetown. Sure their are a few buildings in the way but nothing noteworthy. For the most part 70% - 80% of the line is still vacant, it just has 30 years of tree growth or pavement on it. This line could still very much support light rail in the near future. Just look at how many houses it could serve from within a half mile of the old line. They are very dense and walkable neighborhoods by suburban standards. I agree with Randy about trading some big box stores and empty parking lots for some dense transit oriented development.
August 16, 201212 yr Author Is anyone familiar with this company and or their Milford HQ? I'm finding it hard to picture what the ultimate goal here is and which building they plan to reuse or demolish in the process. I wish they would tear all of the Glenway Crossing buildings down and start over, preferably leaving room for a future light rail station. :-D TQL opening West Side office, adding 80 jobs Business Courier Date: Monday, July 23, 2012, 12:35pm EDT http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/07/23/tql-opening-west-side-office-adding.html

It features a village green where Harrison and Urwiler avenues now intersect, much like the grassy island separating Erie Avenue in Hyde Park Square. Will they demo the existing structure or try to improve it in a way that meets their needs?
August 27, 201410 yr This thread has been dormant for a while, so I'll give some updates. Most of it isn't actually in Western Hills, but a lot of the posts in this thread haven't been related to Western Hills anyway. -A new Planet Fitness is being close to being finished on Glenway where the old Red Lobster was. Just more shuffling as there is already one in where the old HQ was. -A new bike trail will be built along the old rail line starting just past Ron's Roost and will end at Veteran's Park on Harrison Ave. If things go well it is expected to be expanded. -At the intersection of Westwood Northern and Harrison, a "lifestyle center" will be built. It will include Dewey's, Tom + Chee, Graeter's and First Watch. A small two story office building will also be on the site. The bike trail will run right behind this for those of you unfamiliar with the area. It will open on April 1st, 2015. -A new subdivision is being built where the recently closed Hillview golfcourse is.
August 28, 201410 yr The consolidation on Glenway has been interesting to watch. Glenway crossings is a ghost town. Any word of what's on tap for the lot where the Crest Cleaners building was recently razed at the intersection of Glenway and Werk?

Any word of what's on tap for the lot where the Crest Cleaners building was recently razed at the intersection of Glenway and Werk? No idea. But I would suggest whoever moves in asks the stop light at Federal and Glenway be adjusted so there isn't any traffic jams. It literally lasts no more than five seconds before changing to red again. I also forgot to mention that there is a Potbelly Sandwich Shop moving in where Taco Bell used to be.
September 1, 201410 yr Author ^Just a correction on the LA Fitness. Planet Fitness is the one building the new gym at the old Red Lobster property. Also, Footing steel is set to be delivered next week on the Harrison Green complex in Green Twp which will include a Greaters, Deweys, Tom & Chee, and a First Watch. The back side of this property will butt up next to the proposed bike trail.
September 5, 201410 yr West Side movie theater getting $1 million upgrade http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2014/09/04/west-side-movie-theater-getting-1-million-upgrade.html Rave Cinemas Western Hills, the 14-screen movie theater in Green Township, is in line for a more than $1 million upgrade. Every Westsider knows a renovation is long overdue for this theater. I saw the exterior was being repainted recently, so I figured something was up. Plus there have been rumors for over a year that it would be torn down or renovated.
