Get a better camera - specifically a DSLR - and I don't mean this in a snarky "quit being cheap" way because I'm considering an upgrade myself. One of the limitations of point-and-shoots is that nowadays they come crammed with more and more megapixels but many use the same processors/equipment from the original incarnations of the camera. March 1, 200817 yr I went down and checked it out briefly. Cool idea, and I didn't think the weather was bad at all for Feb 29th. It was surreal for me, because I got to stand on the demolished spot of a former workplace, Landry's. It was the first time I'd been on the boardwalk there since I'd quit a decade ago.

That's one main reason for the noise, and DSLRs are designed to mitigate that. Yes. Even with a DSLR, the tripod makes a big difference. It lets you use a slower shutter speed without motion blur. That means you can avoid using high ISO settings that result in noise (grainy appearance).
March 2, 200817 yr Thanks for the comments on the photos. And thanks for the tips on shooting better night photos...they'll come in handy since I'm going to DC this week and plan to walk the streets with my camera. The turnout was great. The organizers were expecting 1,000 people...not sure they got that, but a couple hundred people came for the three or so hours I was there. And many of them were teens and college-are folks.
March 2, 200817 yr I was down there with wife and baby and saw lots of friends, including cd-cleveland, who protected many people from exploding fire pits! The crowd was decent while I was there between 8 and 9 and was definitely larger when I left. I heard several people commenting on what a cool idea it was, though I got the sense that they thought it hadn't lived up to its potential. It was positive thinking, though. Of the nature that this is the first try and something like this could be developed and enhanced annually. Oh, and props to the organizers for getting Gypsy to do the food/drink... nothing like a hot cup of chili and some cider to warm your belly on a cold February night! My pics don't offer much more than what you've already posted, but I'll add a few anyway:
