I'm leaving LA to visit Cleveland for a week from St. Patty's Day 'till the following Sunday.  I haven't been home for over a year, so, besides visiting my family, what are the essential places I should check out which are relatively new?  I mean everything: restaurants, bars, museums, building projects... I want to take in as much as possible.  I check this site all the time, so I have a pretty good idea of what's going on, but I would love some specific suggestions.  Thanks!

Bar Cento, Tremont Tap House, Stonebridge V- 2020 martini bar space, Detroit Shoreway in general is  looking pretty good too. I will think of more.

Shaker Square/Larchmere - Its the best neighborhood in Cleveland!

Coventry - in the heights, but go see it.

University Circle - Museum Ground Zero

Playhouse Square - You name the show...they got it

AsiaTown/Asian Village - Cheap eats...young crowds

Bars/Clubs?  What kind?

StoneMad should be open by St. Paddy's Day. W.65th north of Detroit Ave.  I can't wait to see this place.

I sort of thought poster was looking for something new or really different in the last year, but that could be just me

Little Italy!

Lola? Have you been there?

Yes, Peabody, I'm looking for anything I wouldn't have been able to see or experience the last time I was home (Jan '07).  Thanks everyone for the ideas, and yes, I'm hoping Stone Mad is open 'cause that has absolutely been on my list.  MTS, I'm straight and love rock 'n roll, but will imbibe tasty beverages in any cool space regardless of the sexual orientation or musical preference of the space!

3231, I think you're reading my mind. Lola is also on my list.  As a veg., I probably can't eat much there, but I will have a drink or five at the bar.  I have been to Lolita's a couple times and had a great time.

MapBoy might have dining suggestions as he's a vegetarian (IIRC).

If you're going to Lola for St. Patrick's Day, you'd better make a reservation ASAP!

Check out Brothers Lounge on Detroit Avenue, between West 117th and West 116th. I just heard at the office that Brothers will open March 14 (I'm a reporter, so that's probably wrong!).

There's also Stonebridge Square (Flats West Bank) that opened last week. It's an awesome looking space and a great concept. See the Stonebridge Phase 5 thread (NE Ohio Projects-Construction section) for discussion and pictures. But there's been some not-so-great reviews so far. Maybe they'll get their act together soon.

Museums- if you're a history buff, or just into heavy metal (I'm sorry for the bad pun) check out the Arms & Armor of Imperial Austria exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Buiding projects worth checking out- Battery Park, Avenue District, East 4th St., Euclid Corridor

Restaurants- A bit of a trip, but didn't Chrissie Hynde's new vegetarian restaurant open in Akron recently?  You might also try Saigon, on East 4th, which opened just a week ago.  They have a few vegetarian options that might be interesting.

I'd say if you want to dine at Lola - go at lunch - I took my partner there for a birthday lunch and I recall quite a few vegetarian options. As X said, and I would recommend - try Saigon across the street - like most Vietnamese restaurants they have a slew of vegetarian entrees (at great prices - most are less than $10.00 at dinner). It's the newest place on East 4th Street and looks great. There's also the Mexican restaurant/tequileria Zocalo which is essentially next door to Saigon, but I've only been there for lunch and I'm not a vegetarian so no clue what they offer.

I'd also heartily recommend Tremont Tap House - especially if you like trying a variety of beers. I think they have something like 24 on tap - let me put it this way - I overheard someone ask for "something like Miller Light" and the server said "the closest we have is Stella". So when their most mainstream beer is Stella, you know it's more a beer connoisseur's joint. For vegetarian food - I highly highly highly recommend either: the egg/spinach/blue-cheese/apple on raisin bread sandwich *or* the macaroni and cheese with figs and rosemary. Both are damned tasty.

Bar Cento, next to Bier Markt is another great spot. They specialize in wood-fired pizzas and you can order beers from the Bier Markt list so you aren't just limited to everything on Bar Cento's menu. Across the street is Phnom Penh, with Cambodian/Thai cuisine - so you might have vegetarian options there as well.

If you happen to be downtown during the day and want to grab lunch - go to the Market Cafe in the AmTrust (Ohio Savings) building at East 9th and Chester. Cafeteria-style, but focused on sustainable practices, etc. - lots of vegetarian fare as well. Oh - and you have to be downtown during the St. Patrick's Day parade - as much as I loathe the amateurs who can't enjoy their drink responsibly, there's something to said for seeing several hundred thousand people reveling in downtown Cleveland:

You mean 99.999% of people?

Sorry, I love St. Patrick's Day, but it's one day where it seems that nearly everyone is p*ssing me off.  There's quite a difference between heavy buzzing/sorta drunk all day (to me, a great time), and puking/acting like an a$$ (not so much a good time).  Get some self-control people!  Do you really want to be sick for 3 days?

^I should clarify.

1. I'm of Irish-German descent. So apparently I'm in the .0001 segment ;-)

2. People who say "wooooo!!! Let's drink green beer!!!! WOOOO!!!!!" should be shot on sight.

3. Why anyone would even drink green beer knowing they'll be ill later - it's green when it comes back up, folks!

4. I go to the parade, linger long enough to take photos and am OUTTA there by the end of the business day.

It's a little obnoxious by the time I head back to work, but it's not like you're surrounded by idiots. That usually happens when work lets out - jeremyck01, if you're not wanting to deal with obnoxious drunks - check out the parade and then stay out of downtown after 4pm-ish.

Good points, I'm of Irish-English-Austrian descent, so I have more of an excuse to celebrate than some people.  But that's beside the point.  It just seems that every single holiday becomes an excuse to get obliterated.  Isn't every weekend throughout the year enough for those people?  Try enjoying being a human being for once.

Last rant, I promise, I'm in a bad mood tonight.

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone!  I had an interest in checking out the Stonebridge 20/20 lounge, but having been employed in the Ken Stewart's school of restaurant service to start and then the Jean Georges school-of-ridiculous-fine-dining for my 3.5 yrs. in NYC, I simply cannot abide bad service, so I'm pretty sure that would ruin my time there, if the reviews posted here are any indication.  My flight gets in at 3 pm, so MayDay I'm gonna have to miss the parade, but I will find festivities later on in the evening.  Thanks for all the veggie suggestions as well.

If you can't stomach the bad service and high cost  for a whole meal you can always go there to grab a coffee. MAybe they will hire you?

Sounds like you're really from Akron if you worked at Ken Stewarts.  Then you should be hitting Vegitaranean on the Northside.  Nearby, Musica is a good space to see bands in Akron.  It has an art gallery and coffee shop(Mocha Maiden) attached to it.  Right next to that is Crave which is pretty eclectic food and one of the best restaurant websites I've ever seen.  Then of course you have the updated Akron Art Museum catty corner to that.  Further down Main St., Ohio Brewing in the Oneil's building will be open then.

I just found the best Thai food in Akron last night in a stripmall by the Airdock. Its called Siamone.

My fave places up north are Melt in Lakewood and The South Side in Tremont.  I don't get up there much.. I'm looking forward to hitting up the Beer Engine tho.

If you don't want to drive to Cleveland but don't want to be in Akron, you can go to Hudson's Northend wine bar that also has a nice beer bar with 8 unique beers on tap.  They sell a nice selection of wine and beer retail.
